Am I, or is friend a bit ... Odd?

It was my friends daughters 1st birthday earlier in the week and she had a little tea party for her after school
So on the day I left for the school run a bit earlier, nipped to the shops, bought her DD a present card and wrapping paper, then picked the kids up, took them home to get changed and wrapped the present and wrote the card while they did so, then on we went to the party
All fine, or so I thought!

My friend text me the next day telling me she was offended by my behaviour about her daughters present, after a confusing exchange of texts I finally find out that basically she's annoyed that I bought the present so close to the party and I should've been 'more organised as I've known for a whole year what date the birthday was'

I'm totally confused
I'd planned to do the shopping this way as it seemed like less faffing for me with my own toddler to make a special trip
I didn't have to get a different present than I'd wanted to because they'd sold out or anything like that
And I thought I'd got a nice present (a pair of pj's, a book and a small cuddly toy)

Was I rude to buy the present on the day?? Or am I right and she's being a bit odd?

nellie
Don't forget the pilgrimage to some far flung place to get it blessed by mute monks.

Don't go short-changing her on the present, jeez!

This is the funniest thread yet. 😂😂

She's utterly barking, OP and bloody rude. How did you respond?

Aquamarine1029 · 13/07/2017 21:32

Your "friend" is a horrible, unreasonable, ungrateful asshole. Find a new friend.

NoCapes · 13/07/2017 21:34

Some of these replies are brilliant Grin

I wasn't late for the party no, there wasn't actually a start time it was just 'come round after school for sandwiches, tea & cake' we were there before 4 and weren't the last to arrive

She has been slightly precious about this baby, she's her only girl and her last baby so she has been a tad PLB but I didn't realise I had to be too! Confused bizarre!

Fucking hell your FIABO for sure.

When kids were younger I kept cellotape in the car for last-minute present wrapping!

FromAtoBin21months · 13/07/2017 21:39

She's nutty as a walnut whip. You don't need ungrateful and rude people like that

PurpleNurple69 · 13/07/2017 21:43

I do this all the time! I'm usually wrapping the present and writing the card in the car park!

cordeliavorkosigan · 13/07/2017 21:45

Bat. shit. crazy.

FreakinDeacon · 13/07/2017 21:45

She has got waaaaay to much time on her hands. Either that or she thinks you had forgotten and just rushed out last minute.

Either way she IBU.

cordeliavorkosigan · 13/07/2017 21:46

cellotape in the car?! brilliant! i'm going to put some wrapping paper in there too, great idea. gotta love mn.

Tean1 · 13/07/2017 21:48

Perhaps she was expecting everyone to come straight from school and was getting stressed when people weren't arriving? I find organising parties v stressful so can imagine standing there at 3.20 worrying that no-one was going to come, the children were going to cry and where on earth was Katy who is always so reliable? (The OP is Katy BTW.)

In general though, buying presents at the last minute is absolutely fine, even after the event is OK in my book. I always think you never now what is going on in other people's lives - one of the children that came to my son's party last weekend said he had left his present at home, I'm genuinely not offended, perhaps his Mum is short of money or time and I'm glad he came.

Boysnme · 13/07/2017 21:51

😂 I have cellotape in the car for this exact reason too! And usually some random leftover wrapping paper!

Madbum · 13/07/2017 21:52

YABVVU don't you know that you should have been planning and considering first birthday gifts since the day she was born? You should have decided on it months ago, bought it and then had the wrapping paper licked on by Persian kittens!
Finally it should have been placed upon a velvet pillow and protected by a Perspex box surrounded by laser beams awaiting the day it could be presented to the birthday girl.
You should be thoroughly ashamed of yourself!

JemimaCuddleFuck · 13/07/2017 21:52

Truly. Madly. Deeply. Batshit.

Apocalyptichorsewoman · 13/07/2017 21:53

Aye - cellotape and scissors in glove compartment! (taps nose)

My car would make 'steptoe and son' look good - it's like a mobile junkyard full of bits of dog, horse, children, and bombay mix.

But spare cellotape and scissors - yes!

She sounds absolutely rabid btw...

altiara · 13/07/2017 21:54

Top tip- if you're going to wrapping presents in the car, then always buy square/rectangular presents. Also if you buy the sheets of wrapping paper rather than a long roll, you don't even need scissors, just sellotape and paper. And... it makes buying presents easier as you only look for boxes or books.
You don't need to thank me! 🤗

yourerubberimglue · 13/07/2017 21:55

Just say you'd already found what you wanted to get online so had planned it so well that you didn't have to go out of your way!

Groovee · 13/07/2017 21:58

Shock I'm stunned at this.

user1499333856 · 13/07/2017 22:00

I have absolutely no idea why she is upset?

BMW6 · 13/07/2017 22:01

FGS don't let her get away with this terrible behaviour - stop her from making a complete arse of herself in future OP!

SuumCuique · 13/07/2017 22:05

Your friend is doolally OP!! Confused

LittleDittyAbout · 13/07/2017 22:06

She's your friend so I assume she is usually nice. I'd be concerned if this is totally unlike her. Is she ill maybe? (Like the 400 posters calling her crazy/batshit/bonkers/insane have so kindly said...)

LittleDittyAbout · 13/07/2017 22:08

Oh "rabid" and "doolally" since I started writing my post above.
