To think it will serve some smokers right if outdoor smoking is banned

Yesterday a friend and I were sitting outside a cafe in a park (no indoor seating) having a coffee. We were the only people there as it was late in the afternoon. A couple sat at the table right beside us and proceeded to light up and enjoy a couple of cigarettes with their coffee.

I was sitting at the bus shelter a couple of evenings ago and a guy sat down beside me and proceeded to light a cigarette. I got up and walked a few feet away and stood until the bus came. He just smoked away, oblivious.

There was a long queue at the ATM today as several in the area weren't working. A woman smoked away in front of me and around loads of other people as we all waited for our turn.

Surely, just because smoking isn't illegal out of doors, it doesn't mean smokers don't have to show any consideration of cop on towards others.

AIBU to think that some smokers (and I know it's only some) will have only themselves to blame if smoking out of doors is eventually made illegal?

Belmont, October 9, 2007, banned in parks and other public places, as well as inside apartments and condominiums.[46]

Berkeley, March 26, 2008, banned on all commercially zoned sidewalks, and within 20 feet (6.1 m) of a bus stop[47][48]

Beverly Hills, October 1, 2007, banned in all outdoor dining areas.[49]

Burbank, April, 2007, banned in most public places including Downtown Burbank, outdoor dining & shopping areas, parks, service lines, and within 20 feet (6.1 m) of all building entrances/exits.[50]

Calabasas, 2006, banned in all indoor and outdoor public places, except for a handful of scattered, designated outdoor smoking areas in town. Believed to be the strictest ban in the United States.[51]

Davis, The Davis City Code prohibits smoking in a wide variety of locations open to the public.[52]
El Cajon, August 14, 2007, banned on city streets, in outdoor patios in restaurants, and outside of the local shopping mall. Anyone caught smoking in public areas will faces a fine of up to $500. The city previously outlawed smoking in parks, and also requires businesses that sell tobacco products to obtain a city license.[53]

El Cerrito, January 1, 2015, banned in all public places, commercial areas, and multi-unit residences and within 25 feet of any of these.[54]

I can see it happening here in a few years.

Gotanewusernamenow · 13/07/2017 16:49

So do sweaty folk have noxious gases coming from them Hmm

JumpyCastle · 13/07/2017 16:53

Yanbu but I complained once about smokers smoking in the no smoking areas outside train stations and got flamed here

LurkingHusband · 13/07/2017 16:55

So non smokers who object to having noxious smelling smoke blown over them are now 'sanctimonious'.

Of course, not all of them. Some would have been quite happy to pay the extra tax needed to ensure people stopped.

But, as I suggested, I'm betting that some of the cheerleaders for the smoking ban would have been less enthusiastic when they realised they were paying for it ....

MissionItsPossible · 13/07/2017 16:58

I know someone who - if someone lights up right next to where he's eating, and refuse to put it out when he asks - he simply goes and joins them. They soon move Grin

So a person that doesn't like someone smoking gets up and sits closer to the person smoking? Hmm What a weirdo. I wouldn't move. I'd stay there and blow my cigarette smoke in his face and his dinner

lottietoot · 13/07/2017 16:59

YANBU at all op. It should be banned. People who smoke around others are inconsiderate arse holes! My opinion automatically changes on someone if they light up near me.

Atenco · 13/07/2017 17:05

Cars which emit harmful gases will indeed be banned sooner or later. In the meantime they do have a economically necessary function, so we allow them to continue polluting - whilst steadily tightening the restrictions to reduce the impact

There are some cars that are necessary, but unfortunately so many people think that only losers don't have cars and so the streets fill up and more and more children have asthma.

Counterpane · 13/07/2017 17:17

"People saying why would it be banned outside and how would you do it....I'm sure there's some states in America where smoking is banned outside."

The police there have guns, would you like them to arrest everyone or shoot all those who don't comply?

Counterpane · 13/07/2017 17:19

I'm a non-smoker by the way.

alltouchedout · 13/07/2017 17:20

I know someone who - if someone lights up right next to where he's eating, and refuse to put it out when he asks - he simply goes and joins them. They soon move
I wouldn't move. I might call the staff and ask them to move the stranger harassing me though.

GreenTulips · 13/07/2017 17:44

We, on the other hand, have no choice but to breathe in unwanted smoke from others' cigarettes

You could move! Or sit indoors!

coddiwomple · 13/07/2017 18:06

Why should I have to stay indoors? I pay for my meal and drinks, why should I be relegated inside?

Me not smoking has absolutely no impact on anyone else. Smokers are being a nuisance. I am pretty certain it will be banned in the UK in restaurants and so on, we follow everybody else for the rest, so I can't see why a smoking ban will be any different.

PrincessIsAUnicorn · 13/07/2017 18:20

As an asthmatic, YABU, where now do you wish them to go? Out of space?! Even then that'll be a problem Confused

PrincessIsAUnicorn · 13/07/2017 18:27

@coddiwomple the smokers HAVE to go outside even when pouring with rain as there is no smoking inside

fluffygreenmonsterhoody · 13/07/2017 18:27

OP YANBU

coddiwomple · 13/07/2017 18:31

smoker don't have to smoke, they are welcome inside or outside, as long as they don't poison everybody else.

Beerwench · 13/07/2017 18:38

If there are designated smoking areas I'll use them, if not I'll be as little of a 'nuisance' as possible.
I understand the right of others to not breathe in smoke. But obviously just the mere fact I smoke is reason enough for me to be judged apparently, and no one seems to grasp that smoking is legal if you agree with it or not.

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 13/07/2017 18:44

Me not smoking has absolutely no impact on anyone else. Smokers are being a nuisance

This with bells on!

Notknownatthisaddress · 13/07/2017 18:51

YANBU to be annoyed by smoke blowing over towards you or around you when you are having an outside coffee OP.

However YABU to have a go at people doing it. It's not a great habit, and most people know it's bad for you, but sadly, it's quite a serious addiction.

People can't smoke anywhere hardly now, so to deny them even smoking outside is a bit tight-arsed to be honest.

Re the 'why should I have to suck in peoples smoke when I'm outside a cafe?' That's a good point, but like a few people have said here, why do you not move? I mean I know like why SHOULD you right? But on the rare occasion it happens to me, I move, rather than bitch and whinge about it.

It's like if someone is parked somewhere near my drive, and I can't get in, I just park on the road and move it on the drive when they've gone.

You need to chill basically OP.

DaviesMum · 13/07/2017 18:51

It strikes me that many of those screaming YABU at you sound like addicts: they minimise, deflect and deny. It's not a criticism, more an observation as a functional addict of a different sort.

I've never heard of farts or BO giving anyone cancer, FWIW.

NotACleverName · 13/07/2017 18:55

I do love a good smoker-bashing thread, me.

FWIW I always move away (if I'm at a bus stop for example) as I figure they won't want to breath in my fag smoke. I like to think I'm considerate but I still think YABU.

GreenTulips · 13/07/2017 18:59

Why should I have to stay indoors? I pay for my meal and drinks, why should I be relegated inside?

Yep - because smokers get free drink and food? Hmm

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 13/07/2017 19:05

I think some smokers need to accept that their habit really pisses people off for good reason, and that they are bringing an unpleasant habit to others. I wanna eat outside without my food tasting of fags and I don't want to go home reeking of fags because you're too inconsiderate to take it elsewhere

MissionItsPossible · 13/07/2017 19:09

Why should I have to stay indoors? I pay for my meal and drinks, why should I be relegated inside?

Er, because it's illegal to smoke inside, you don't like cigarette smoke, ergo, you go inside. Hmm Gosh, some people are so inconsiderate of others and I say that as a non smoker. Maybe in the Summer the roles could be reversed and non-smokers can to have their meals outside and the smokers have to go indoors to smoke. Would that please you? I already know the answer. I can't believe what selfish people there are on this thread.
