To think it will serve some smokers right if outdoor smoking is banned

Yesterday a friend and I were sitting outside a cafe in a park (no indoor seating) having a coffee. We were the only people there as it was late in the afternoon. A couple sat at the table right beside us and proceeded to light up and enjoy a couple of cigarettes with their coffee.

I was sitting at the bus shelter a couple of evenings ago and a guy sat down beside me and proceeded to light a cigarette. I got up and walked a few feet away and stood until the bus came. He just smoked away, oblivious.

There was a long queue at the ATM today as several in the area weren't working. A woman smoked away in front of me and around loads of other people as we all waited for our turn.

Surely, just because smoking isn't illegal out of doors, it doesn't mean smokers don't have to show any consideration of cop on towards others.

AIBU to think that some smokers (and I know it's only some) will have only themselves to blame if smoking out of doors is eventually made illegal?

It makes me angry to no end when someone intent on killing their own lungs and passing mutations to their future generation starts doing it in my face. YADNBU

Caenea · 13/07/2017 15:37

I would really, really like to know if anyone objecting to being smoked near in bus bus shelters, queues etc has ever actually tried POLITELY ASKING THE SMOKER TO MOVE AWAY.

Or do you prefer to put on an over-egged performance and hope they'll take the hint? You're adults - use your words.

Ropsleybunny · 13/07/2017 15:38

Apparently I'm a cunt for saying quit. Well I quit and so did my DH.

'Breaking news, it's not impossible to give up smoking'

The good news is, the NHS will even help you.

Onhold · 13/07/2017 15:39

Torch ~~Envy right in your face.

JacquesHammer · 13/07/2017 15:48

@Caenea yes I have POLITELY as you put it. You get nowhere

I know someone who - if someone lights up right next to where he's eating, and refuse to put it out when he asks - he simply goes and joins them. They soon move Grin

Smoking in the UK is heavily taxed. Really heavily taxed. More revenue is raised by smokers than is spent treating smoking related illness on the NHS. Plus smokers die earlier saving the state pensions and other old age related payments.

LurkingHusband · 13/07/2017 16:10

Are smokers net tax payers? How does that work out?

Because the money smoking-related diseases cost the NHS is exceeded by the tax gathered.

More subtle is the fact that when people inconsiderately give up smoking, that start becoming an overall burden to the system, as they claim pensions for much longer that if they kept smoking.

So the push to stop people smoking is slowly enlarging the pool of people who will claim pensions for longer.

(I wonder if there's an "aha" moment for some people who have never really understood the ever-rising pension age ?)

Got to love the summer smoking threads. Us being outside suits you in the winter, no? Getting to chuckle at the miserable sods sharing umbrellas and struggling to light a fag in the wind.

It's our time now.Grin

Branleuse · 13/07/2017 16:14

I'm quite happy with smoking being banned in indoor public spaces, but it's completely OTT and hysterical to not be able to cope with it outside in the open air.

Ropsleybunny · 13/07/2017 16:16

It's our time now

Make the most of it, we'll live longer than you Grin

user1485342611 · 13/07/2017 16:16

Only a few more months before the bad weather sets in and we don't have to read these threads. Quote

Thing is, Spuddington You don't have to read these threads if you don't want to. We, on the other hand, have no choice but to breathe in unwanted smoke from others' cigarettes.

So really sorry if these threads offend or annoy you. But just take the option of not reading them.

what would be the point of having a car if you could only drive it around your own property?

Cars which emit harmful gases will indeed be banned sooner or later. In the meantime they do have a economically necessary function, so we allow them to continue polluting - whilst steadily tightening the restrictions to reduce the impact.

TheySayIamparanoid · 13/07/2017 16:17

I smoked a lot until I stopped by accident when my DS got me an e cig last Christmas. I was considerate about where I smoked but it did annoy me when someone would sit next to me ano then complain about me smoking!

Now what does make me want to vomit is the smell of burning flesh. If everyone would stop eating meat and the idiot shop owners would stop blowing the smells outside, that would be great, ta

I'd like user number posters who cab to get a proper user name banned from MN. Quote

Perhaps you should get your facts right before you start moaning about something that posters can't actually do anything about Onhold,

Easier said than done Caenea. You're as likely to get a mouthful of abuse or a sneery look as a polite response.

All you conspiracy theorists who say it will never be banned because of the tax it raises - please explain why governments all over the world have introduced restrictions on where you can smoke?

BlurryFace · 13/07/2017 16:28

Ropsleybunny, if it's going to save me forgetting everyone I knew and wasting away in a bed I never leave, I will smoke heavier than ever.

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 13/07/2017 16:29

YANBU, it's so gross, some people think smoking near others is a god given right and are very bitter about the indoor smoking ban!

user1485342611 · 13/07/2017 16:31

My mother's 82 Blurryface. She swims, goes on holidays, has her grandchildren to stay, meets her friends for lunch, plays bridge etc etc

You don't automatically get dementia and take to your bed as soon as you hit 75.

And when someone stands next to my pram and lights up a fag which then has smoke blowing towards the baby, yes I will do exaggerated arm flapping and tutting, because I am British and the passive aggressive way is the only way Wink

LurkingHusband · 13/07/2017 16:35

All you conspiracy theorists who say it will never be banned because of the tax it raises - please explain why governments all over the world have introduced restrictions on where you can smoke?

Because they need to quietly raise the money from all the sanctimonious non-smokers (re: my point about pensions) to plug the shortfall.

Which is exactly what they have been doing for the past 10 years. Under the guise of "global financial crisis" and "austerity".

You can bet your life that if the debate had been framed "would you pay an extra 1-2% tax so that smoking can be reduced and eventually banned" less people would have been quite so keen to push ahead.

MerchantofVenice · 13/07/2017 16:36

The problem on threads like these is all the comparisons people make. There really isn't anything genuinely comparable to smoking in public.

Smokers like to start criticising those who consume alcohol, and how antisocial their behaviour can become...but if you exercise restraint and are, basically, not an arsehole, you can happily drink next to someone and cause them zero health issues. Not so for smoking; you can be the nicest person in the world, or a complete arsehole- the scientifically proven effects of your smoke will be identical.

And cars... yes, fumes are damaging, but transport is vital to our lives. Many governments are looking into ways to limit/ultimately ban petrol cars... but it can't just happen because our lives and economies are totally reliant on getting about. Smoking serves no practical purpose. It is in no way comparable.

I agree that people should have free choice and you can't ban everything that is bad for your (own) health... but when you're inflicting poison on others around you, it's totally different.

Smoking is a pointless, damaging leisure activity that people choose of their own free will. Let them get on with it - sure. But don't inflict it on others.

BennyOfTheGlen · 13/07/2017 16:39

I'm quite happy with smoking being banned in indoor public spaces, but it's completely OTT and hysterical to not be able to cope with it outside in the open air

THIS - sums it up perfectly.

PossumInAPearTree · 13/07/2017 16:39

People saying why would it be banned outside and how would you do it....I'm sure there's some states in America where smoking is banned outside.

user1485342611 · 13/07/2017 16:40

So non smokers who object to having noxious smelling smoke blown over them are now 'sanctimonious'.

The lengths some smokers go to in order to convince themselves that they're not being annoying and that non smokers are being precious and difficult is actually quite amusing.
