To think it will serve some smokers right if outdoor smoking is banned

Yesterday a friend and I were sitting outside a cafe in a park (no indoor seating) having a coffee. We were the only people there as it was late in the afternoon. A couple sat at the table right beside us and proceeded to light up and enjoy a couple of cigarettes with their coffee.

I was sitting at the bus shelter a couple of evenings ago and a guy sat down beside me and proceeded to light a cigarette. I got up and walked a few feet away and stood until the bus came. He just smoked away, oblivious.

There was a long queue at the ATM today as several in the area weren't working. A woman smoked away in front of me and around loads of other people as we all waited for our turn.

Surely, just because smoking isn't illegal out of doors, it doesn't mean smokers don't have to show any consideration of cop on towards others.

AIBU to think that some smokers (and I know it's only some) will have only themselves to blame if smoking out of doors is eventually made illegal?

smokers should be encouraged that vaping is safer, sure, I only said that I don't want the vaping vapour in my face anymore than I want cigarette smoke.

A complete ban of smoking/vaping in all food and drink areas would be a good start.

A complete ban of smoking on the beach, with heavy fines, would be great too. It's less the smoke that is bothering me there, but the amount of cigarette litter, it's disgusting.

WomblingThree · 13/07/2017 14:55

Jesus not another smoking thread turned into a vaper witch hunt. The sooner the hard of thinking realise it's two different things, the better.

@TipTopTipTopClop that was actually the worst thing about giving up smoking for me, realising how gross I smelt, and that I'd genuinely never realised.

Smoking is unlikely to ever be banned outside. There is no reason for it to be. Indoor smoking was banned in part due to the risk to the health of staff working in places where lots of smoking took place. Pubs and other establishments initially tried to mitigate the risk by installing air purifiers, but ultimately it was realised that an overall ban was better.

When it comes to outside, there are so many other pollutants that cigarette smoke, dissipated by the wind, probably wouldn't even register on a pollution meter. Car and lorry exhaust fumes are by far more harmful to the environment, and no one suggests banning vehicles. Gross smells, in and of themselves, aren't actually harmful.

LurkingHusband · 13/07/2017 14:58

Outdoor smokers would have a lot stronger leg to stand on if there weren't mountains of cigarette ends damaging the environment ...

I'm not previous enough to really concerned about health risks when someone's smoking is blowing in my face. It's just that it stinks. Can put up with it when passing by smokers in the street but find it gross when eating outside. The fart analogy from upthread is a good one. It would be equally gross to try to eat with fart smell all around you.

Kinderbonbon · 13/07/2017 15:01

For fuck sake, do you think we want to be smokers ???? YABU

coddiwomple · 13/07/2017 15:01

Years ago, people thought smokers would not be able to survive a long haul flight without a cigarette. It seems that they have managed to cope after all. I am sure smokers can cope just as well when they are having a meal or a drink.

spankhurst · 13/07/2017 15:01

I've existed for almost 47 years and can't remember ever arriving home 'stinking of someone else's fag smoke'. Well, not after the pub ban, anyway.

Smoking is daft and illogical, but we humans generally are.

Notsosureanymoors · 13/07/2017 15:02

YANBU OP and I smoke.

WomblingThree · 13/07/2017 15:02

But LurkingHusband they don't need a "leg to stand on". They aren't doing anything wrong.

trixymalixy · 13/07/2017 15:05

Ban having kids. The drain on the NHS is huge.

Kids are future taxpayers, there won't be any future NHS without them.

Teaformeplease · 13/07/2017 15:08

When I rule the world all smoking will be banned.
Smokers are really selfish, they light up with no consideration for others around them and throw their butts wherever they like too. I don't want to breathe in their disgusting smoke, neither do I want my dd to breathe it. Or my dogs for that matter. YANBU!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 13/07/2017 15:08

For fuck sake, do you think we want to be smokers ???? YABU

Yeah, you are forced, literally forced into it against your will!

Giddyaunt18 · 13/07/2017 15:09

I do think it should be banned in pub gardens or anywhere near entrances to public buildings(hate having to walk through a smokey fug to get in or out of a building) Some pubs have a non smoking outdoor area but it depends on available space doesn't it. Ultimately it would be great if everyone gave up smoking but lots of pub customers also smoke so landlords have to think of their income. I don't know what you mean by it 'serving smokers right ' though as they are not breaking any current law.

TheFirstMrsDV · 13/07/2017 15:09

I feel really sorry for anyone who lives above or next to a dedicated or informal smoking area.

I was somewhere the other day. The smoking bit was packed and there were several flats above. Their houses must stink all the time and there is the additional noise.

I don't think you can ban a legal pursuit if its done outside. I do think more thought could be put into where people smoke. For a long time it seemed to be that smokers felt they were owed facilities. This has changed the longer the ban has been in place.

I don't hate smokers and I have been a smoker. I am not adverse to the occasional fag when I go out. I don't feel like I am owed a place to smoke or any special treatment. It is a stupid and ridiculous habit. Even smokers have to know that surely?

Figaro2017 · 13/07/2017 15:12

Kids are future taxpayers, there won't be any future NHS without them.

Smokers are current net taxpayers. Assuming their life expectancy is less, then they are also less of a drain on the pensions and care systems.

JacquesHammer · 13/07/2017 15:12

When the pub I mentioned earlier went non-smoking in its beer garden, a group of smokers complained they would have to stand in a little shelter the owner made at the front by the corner of a major car park. They didn't want to smoke where it smelled of exhaust fumes Grin.

StickThatInYourPipe · 13/07/2017 15:17

If people think it should be banned outside, surely they would just think it should be banned completely - it won't but i was just wondering. If you don't think this - why not?

Lucisky · 13/07/2017 15:20

JaquesHammer...possibly a diet of too many crisps and cherry drops may impact your health? Just saying.

JacquesHammer · 13/07/2017 15:23

.possibly a diet of too many crisps and cherry drops may impact your health? Just saying

Yeah possibly. Wouldn't impact anyone else's though would it.......

mummyrabbitpeppapig · 13/07/2017 15:25

I hate it when parents smoke in playgrounds too. There was a woman smoking on a bench near the bottom of the slide - I politely asked her not to smoke near my child and git a mouthful of abuse! Lovely woman - OH won't go with me to that particular park anymore......

LurkingHusband · 13/07/2017 15:29

But LurkingHusband they don't need a "leg to stand on". They aren't doing anything wrong.

Someone is just chucking their butts on the ground, and it's unlikely to be non-smokers.

Yes, non-smokers litter too, but two wrongs etc .....

TheFirstMrsDV · 13/07/2017 15:30

Are smokers net tax payers?
How does that work out?
