I just can't warm to him, I've really tried but I just can't. I don't want him to win Wimbledon. AIBU and unpatriotic?

YANBU. I can't stand him. He's so petulant.

MyGastIsFlabbered · 07/07/2017 20:48

I don't think it's the dullness thing....back in his heyday I had such a huuuuuge crush on Tim Henman...now I look back and think wtf was I thinking Blush

It's hardly mean spirited, I really doubt AM is going to be trawling MN for a bit of bedtime reading

Not him, but his mammy might. You'd better pray no-one links her to this thread on Twitter. 🙏 🙏

EarlessToothlessVagabond · 07/07/2017 20:49

Oh god Tim Henman! Now you do deserve a bloody pasting for that Grin. Wishy washy 'Tiger' Tim!

MyGastIsFlabbered · 07/07/2017 20:49

Actually the reason I don't want him to win is because I'd love either Rafa or Federer to win by hey let's not let facts get in the way of giving someone a pasting.

I think there is a certain type of personality which makes it at the very highest level of sport in the UK. Andy Murray, David Beckham, Mr Laura Trott, Jonny Wilkinson, Chris Froome - none of them are known for their outgoing, charming personalities. What they do all have is a single mindedness to keep plugging away and win against the odds, creating that feeling of taking your breathe away which makes it such a joy to watch them.

I wonder if the majority of those that have the raw talent plus the personality end up getting caught up in the high octane glamour of sporting life along the way, and so don't reach the upper echelons? Chris Hoy bucks the trend but how many other of our sporting greats have the whole package of talent, hard work, tv personality, close to their roots, family, etc?

Team Andy

alltalknobaby · 07/07/2017 20:51

Oh god, that video. Are all tennis players as dull as AM?!? I had no idea

MyGastIsFlabbered · 07/07/2017 20:51

I'm quaking in my boots at Judy Murray making an appearance

And in my defence, even at the height of my Tim-love I could see that 'Tiger' Tim was a particularly unsuitable moniker

I am so sick of these threads. If you don't like him, don't watch him. The TV does have other channels. Stop whining all over MN.

Sittinginthesun · 07/07/2017 20:52

I can't get excited by him, or his tennis, either. And I have tried.

I am a lot in love with Nadal and only slightly less in love with Federer. Love watching them play, but Murray isn't smooth or glidey enough for me.

Binkybix · 07/07/2017 20:52

I've always liked him because he's so bad at media and unpolished. But more than this, he's worked incredibly hard and plowed his own furrow, training in Spain from a young age. How anyone can't like him after his runner up speech after losing his first Wimbledon final, I don't know.

He's an amazing role model.

This won me over! Brilliant!

MyGastIsFlabbered · 07/07/2017 20:54

Hardly whining is it? I'm enjoying the tennis so I won't turn it off, but thanks for the tip, I'd honestly never considered that Hmm

I don't like him. But that's much more to do with the way he plays tennis and the way he shuffles around the court muttering all the time and never smiles.
He does have a sense of humour though.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-scotland-27130166/andy-murray-in-tears-at-freedom-of-stirling-award

He couldn't even get past the first sentence.

Sad😭Sad😭Sad😭

TryHarderWillis · 07/07/2017 20:55

I don't like him either and don't give the shiniest shit what any fucker here thinks.

buggerthebotox · 07/07/2017 20:55

I didn't used to "like" him either. But his dedication and character have won through. He's on now, and hauling himself back into the game. Brilliant.

He doesn't pander to the media, and comes across as genuine.

However I can never understand why he has his mother hanging round him all the time. Weird.

MyGastIsFlabbered · 07/07/2017 20:57

Maybe I'm getting sensitive in my old age, but someone asking 'wtf is wrong with you' isn't exactly imbued with friendliness is it?

I even said in my OP I've tried to warm to him but I can't. Hardly hate-speech is it?

What baffles me is the amount of people who come on simply to post 'I hate threads like this'

Did you never see the documentary on him when he was asked about the Dunblane tragedy? He could barely speak about it. He was so emotional and then went on to say how he hopes that his success gives Dunblane something positive to be proud of rather than what folk remember of that dreadful day. He doesn't court the media and for that gaun yersel big man!

MudGolum · 07/07/2017 20:57

Team Andy!

Hard working, talented, family man, who doesn't seem to care what people think. There's a role model for my kids right there.
