Charlie Gard case

AIBU to feel the drama over this poor little boy is not helpful? I read the Pope and Donald Trump were suggesting they help- when several courts have agreed it is in his best interests to let the little boy die with dignity. I feel sorry for him as he may be in pain and it is unfair to add further to false hope for the parents as well. I also feel that many, many people has awful situations where babies die, sadly, for example stillbirths and other cases which are just un-heard and un-noticed and people have to deal with it, so why is there such a huge focus here.

Charlie's mother seems to think America is still an option though? In her DM to me she said it had at least a 50% chance of some improvement and a 10% of a cure?
She also said GOSH have said that Charlie can see.
It is so hard to know what is the truth in all that is reported. I believe there's nothing else that can be done for him though, unfortunately.

zeezeek · 06/07/2017 22:15

Flatbreads. Thank you. For me it is almost a lifetime ago. For other people, it is still so raw.

Flowers to those going through this now.

ConfidentlyUnhinged · 06/07/2017 22:17

Zeezeek I believe whole heartedly you did the right thing for your wee Sam. I hope the Charlie Gard case hasn't caused you pain. Bless you.

FellOutOfBed2wice · 06/07/2017 22:32

I feel awful for his parents and believe that- although I think their actions are somewhat bizarre- that whatever they're doing is coming from a place of intense pain and that they're not thinking or behaving rationally. I also believe that the Social Media stuff they're doing and the talking to the press is making them feel heard and somehow in control. I don't blame them for their behaviour but I bloody do blame the gutter press and Charlie's fucking Army and their battalion of morons who are fuelling the parents obsessive and damaging behaviour. He should be allowed to die with some dignity and gain some peace but while CA and The Sun are still giving his desperate parents some validation I fear their descisons won't be well thought out.

JonSnowsWhore · 06/07/2017 22:37

Goodness I'm sitting here sobbing my heart out after reading this & the update on little Bradley as well. I'm just so so sorry for all that you've been through, life is utterly cruel.
Apologies for the dramatic sobbing, I'm coming down with something & over tired

My financial situation is rubbish at the moment but once I manage to improve it I think I'll also be setting up a direct debit to GOSH simply for all the amazing work they do

BlueNeighbourhood · 06/07/2017 22:38

I've been following the case since the threads started popping up on here, taking much more notice over the past couple of days. Now I wholeheartedly feel sorry for the parents, they must have someone in the background feeding them all this information, or someone who is clouding their judgement that he could actually pull through and make it? It feels like there's a lot more going on behind the scenes than we know about.

Also, the article today saying the parents are banned from the doctors meeting with a whole Daily Fail sad face photo? This publicity is doing more harm than good, along with the handful of protestors out today. Someone is doing more harm than good, if they have a publicist they really need to fire them.

RustyParker · 06/07/2017 23:23

CA have started up again about mixing Charlie's milk with the treatment from the US. "I guess it's probably illegal though" Hmm Do these idiots think that Charlie's milk is from a semi-skimmed 2 pint in the fridge?

Lots of posts about how Charlie as grown and how big he is so he can't be terminally ill; the reports suggest he is on a high-fat formula presumably to fuel his body and if he isn't moving then he isn't burning calories.

I don't think CA would turn on Charlie's parents when the withdrawal of life support happens but I do think they would turn their hate even further onto GOSH and unfortunately, I think the parents would encourage it.

My love and respect to all posters who have lost their precious children or dealing with long term illnesses.

FlyingElbows · 06/07/2017 23:37

Mix it with milk? Do they seriously think every medical treatment is like Calpol?

RustyParker · 07/07/2017 00:08

I think they do Flying They seem to think there's no side effects to this treatment either.

I can't get over how they think his feed is stored and prepared somewhere so accessible that the parents can secretly add things to it. When my son was in NICU I had no idea where milk was stored and rightly so.

It instinctively feels awful to say this but I hope Charlie will be allowed to quietly slip away in the next couple of days. It's so sad to keep seeing those photos of his lifeless eyes and read that the parents think he is responsive.

LogicalPsycho · 07/07/2017 00:08

Is this legitimate?

European Parliament are publicly backing Charlie's parents to fight GOSH?

What next? Seriously, nothing would surprise me anymore.

Oh dear, either she is deceiving herself or some pretty evil person is deceiving her. There is, quite, simply, no cure for brain damage, and even the doctor offering the treatment doesn't think it will make any difference.

DorotheaBeale · 07/07/2017 00:30

European Parliament are publicly backing Charlie's parents to fight GOSH

Good grief! Reading that has made me quite angry. How bloody dare they!

TheWeeWitch · 07/07/2017 00:37

It not "the European Parliament" signing that letter, but a few individual members of the EP taking a united position.

GinSoakedTwitchyPony · 07/07/2017 00:39

Around 45 MEPs were signatories to that letter.
I believe there are about 750 MEPs in total.

Fancythat69 · 07/07/2017 00:48

Sorry about the daily mail link-
but this is getting unbelievable www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4673276/Pope-Francis-Charlie-Gard-Vatican-passport.html

LogicalPsycho · 07/07/2017 00:55

Jesus Christ. Like I said, nothing would surprise me anymore. They people are beyond reprehensible for dragging out this boy's suffering for public favour.

It doesn't matter if he's given citizenship on Pluto, even the fucking Pope himself can't order High Court to change their minds.

LogicalPsycho · 07/07/2017 00:58

I think there will be a lot of Doctors, nurses nd HCPs needing counselling, or treatment for PTSD when this whole torrid affair has reached its inevitable conclusion.

DorotheaBeale · 07/07/2017 00:59

Around 45 MEPs were signatories to that letter.

It's hugely insulting, towards the doctors, the courts and the UK as a whole, however many signed it.

sparechange · 07/07/2017 00:59

To the PPs asking who is pulling the strings of this media campaign...
All the photos in the Daily Fail article are watermarked as copyright to Featureworld www.featureworld.co.uk
"Sell your real-life story – told how you want it to be with the UK’s most established and respected writer and media agent
✔ Sell my story online – no fuss.
✔ Fee free. You don’t pay a penny
✔ Confidential and independent advice
✔ Whole of market – mags, papers, TV
✔ Press protection and representation
✔ Your own trusted publicist and writer
✔ Fast payments into your bank account"

The parents' motivations for stringing this out are getting more and more murky by the day...

GinSoakedTwitchyPony · 07/07/2017 01:04

Absolutely agree, Dorothea.

GinSoakedTwitchyPony · 07/07/2017 01:05

Posted too soon.
The figure is less than 45, media can't agree on either 40 or 37.

Fancythat69 · 07/07/2017 01:05

All the commenting on posts is being turned off on the CA Facebook page. I wonder why?

TheWeeWitch · 07/07/2017 01:08

@sparechange I knew there had to be some dodgy PR person/firm fanning the flames. I feel so much pity for the parents, it seems they are truly being used and manipulated in the worst possible way.

LogicalPsycho · 07/07/2017 01:12

sparechange

So when the family released this image of themselves, it was sold to a Sell Your Story page? Wow. I have no words.

It makes the casual sunglasses on the head pose seem even more distasteful.

logical
My guess (and I work in PR but a very different area to these lowlife scum) is that the PR women/media agent has arranged for a photographer to come and take that photo, plus lots of others

She then calls the Fail, Sun, and probably a stack of other magazines and websites, and says 'I've got photos to accompany the Charlie Gard story for sale' and might even throw in a few quotes from the family to make it a juicy story

The reporters and picture desk will then decide how badly they want to run the story, and either buy the photos from FeatureWorld, or possibly even negotiate to pay extra and get the exclusive rights to be the only ones who are allowed to use the photos

Every photo with (C) FeatureWorld on it will be staged to a degree, and taken by their own photographer who lets FeatureWorld retain copyright and therefore pay per use

Looking at some of the pics used early on in the reporting, they are attributed to PA (the Press Association) so my guess would be this FeatureWorld leech spotted that the press were taking enough of an interest to send their photographers to the hospital to get pics to cover the story, so contacted the family and offered to represent them and get money for their story and photos.

That will have been the tipping point for them going to the press to raise awareness of the case and money for treatment, to making actual cash for themselves by keeping the story on the front pages.

I know there are other MN PRs so would be interested to get their take on it also
