Tiramisu...

(Lighthearted)

Aibu to think the tiramisu is the best dessert in the planet by miles? All that yummy squishy goodness, the marscapone, the shot of coffee, the taste of alcohol....

My family think I am strange. My mum said "we didn't raise you to like things like tiramisu". I think she thinks I have ideas above my station....
We were bought up on neon food - fishfingers, chips and angel delight. Grin

In my 36 years on the planet I have only ever met one other who likes this manna, this taste from heaven. Conversely, she was Italian.

Any things you like and find yourself in the minority?

(Just at specialist waiting room and bored Grin )

Costco Red Velvet cake (drools onto keyboard)

Oh we always get that one for work birthdays. It's very nice. And huge.

metalmum15 · 06/07/2017 15:21

My all time favourite dessert is Crema Catalana. I only ever eat it on holiday otherwise I'd be stuffing it down me every day.

PollyPelargonium52 · 06/07/2017 15:21

Aldi tiramisu is amazing.

SistersOfPercy · 06/07/2017 17:01

At the moment I have a thing for an Eton Mess type mix. I've been chucking strawberries in with a little vanilla ice cream, a meringue nest and a squirt of squirty cream, smooshing it all together and then feeling guilty all night.
But then to be fair I've never met a dessert I don't like. Blush

squiggleirl · 06/07/2017 23:07

It's been years since I've eaten in the Steps of Rome, but Pizza and Tiramisu was a thing of wonder there.....

HungerOfThePine · 06/07/2017 23:17

Had two bites of tirimasu today I couldn't eat itSad flavour was nice but it was watery and texture was bluech.

Not a fan, Eton mess for new.

squoosh · 06/07/2017 23:26

I looked up Steps of Rome today and apparently it's moved from Chatham Row all the way out to Clonskeagh.

LockedOutOfMN · 06/07/2017 23:33

Love tiramisu but think my own is the best so luckily I can't be faffed making it more than once a year. DH loves it too so I only get a couple of spoonfuls before he wolfs the rest. Keeps my weight down! Actually, we moved house 18 months ago and I've definitely never made it in this house.

Crema catalana is bloody lovely when homemade (conversely, not by me) and ice cold, and we live in Spain (not Catalunya though) so it's widely available! Tempting.

Red velvet cake is gross; you're - all - on your own there!

BoldKitties · 06/07/2017 23:42

Oh Mollie, definitely pay Il Caffe di Napoli a visit if you have time, I promise you won't be disappointed. It's only a stones throw from the National Gallery too, so if you're heading there it's perfect for coffee and a bite to eat before or after. They also have Baci, you know, these amazing Italian gianduja chocolates.

What else have you planned for your visit to Dublin? There are so many great restaurants and bars to visit. Though some are rather pricey! Feel free to ask on here for any recommendations Wink.

Tiramisu...
BoldKitties · 06/07/2017 23:49

Also lots of great sights to see. But for me, when I travel anywhere, it's the food (and cocktails) that I get most excited about BlushWink.

squoosh, I didn't know that Steps of Rome have moved out to Clonskeagh. That makes getting there a bit more difficult. The number 11 bus from town, I think?

Mollie, if you are planning on bussing it anywhere, definitely download the Dublin Bus app, it's actually very useful.

Mollie85 · 09/07/2017 07:38

Bold thank you so much - I actually lived in Dublin for three years (and consider it very much my second home) so know a fair bit.
It'll be a rather sedate trip this time as not planning on meeting anyone. I've ended up booking Blooms as it was on special on Booking.com (150 euro for four nights!!) and I've never actually stayed right in Temple Bar before. Hotel looks amazing. Will take earplugs if Club M gets too loud lol.

I'll do the museums, a fair bit of shopping (Penneys and Dunnes) and then I'll get the Dart out to Howth because by then I'll be missing the sea air. I wonder if Mauds the ice cream shop is still out there??

In between that I will eat tiramisu and flirt madly with bearded locals Grin

There's something about wet sponge that I just can't cope with so the same goes for trifle, obviously. However bread and butter pudding, which is also essentially wet sponge (bread/brioche/croissant) is my favourite so I guess that's a contradiction.

BoldKitties · 10/07/2017 01:10

Have a brilliant time, Mollie. Ah, you know your way around well so! Yeah you should probably take some earplugs, just in case.

I think Maud's in Howth is closed (though I could be wrong, haven't been out to Howth in ages. The cliff walk out there will always be my favourite walk to do, though). If you want great ice-cream in town - Gino's is your best bet. There's one on Henry St, and one on Grafton St, and probably quite a few more. Amazing ice-cream. I love the strawberry, but they also do Ferrero Rocher, Bueno and Nutella.

Ciao Bella Roma on Parliament St is also great for tiramisu, and savage pizzas.

If you want cocktails (see I can't resist offering tips, even though you don't need them Blush, I just love Dublin), Farrier and Draper is great, as is Sam's. Though expect to pay €12 for a cocktail.

If flirting with bearded locals is what tickles your fancy, you are in luck. You can't move in Dublin without tripping over like 10 beardy blokes Grin. Bar Rua is particularly good for this. Or P.Macs.

Penneys have loads of nice stuff at the moment. I've just bought lovely crew neck sweaters in every colour available, for €6 each. Dunnes in the Stephen's Green centre also have a great stock of the Savida range.

Have a blast!

Firefries · 10/07/2017 01:24

Another tiramisu fan here although I haven't read the thread. I love the stuff!!! Always have. To me it's heaven.

Firefries · 10/07/2017 01:25

I'm going to have to go and make some. I used to have a great recipe but lost it. Any ideas from anyone? Thx

Mollie85 · 10/07/2017 15:30

Bold thank you!!! I'm very excited. Haven't been since last February (normally try to get at least one trip in a year). Last time I flirted and kissed outside the pub like a couple of teenagers not people in our thirties with a bearded gentleman named Gerard from Tullamore. It was almost the highlight of my trip. But then, I am a simple kind of girl Grin

I will still get out to Howth- as you say, the walk is a delight and living in the Channel Islands spoils me for the sea air. Sad about Mauds though, but the Nutella ice cream sounds like something I can get on board with!

Firefries - there are a couple of recipes up thread. Let us know how you get on!

Gino d'acampo's yes I know he's a twit cherry tiramisu is bloody lovely if you like almonds - the recipe uses amaretto instead of coffee.

I do like a good traditional tiramisu too though.

DudeHatesHisCarryOut · 10/07/2017 16:14

Well, I got the bloomer (it's tiny! Told DP he had to make sure he eats it all and it doesn't go off!) and the fools. Had a lemon one as I'm not a fan of raspberry and it was wonderful, so thank you. Definitely worth breaking the diet for!!!

As for Tiramisu, how could I forget Pompi? Ok, so you do, actually, have to go to Rome but trust me, it is worth it! I was taken there by my Italian friend a few years ago and we skipped the main course and went straight for the pudding. Lush!

achangeisgonnacome · 10/07/2017 16:48

I've made Nigella's tiramisu layer cake (think that's what it's called) many times. I always seem to use way more Tia Maria that I'm meant to, but it tastes soooo good.

squoosh · 10/07/2017 16:52

Grin Grin

Who among us hasn't stood outside a pub snogging the face of a fella called Gerard.

It's such an Irish man's name. Don't think I've ever met a British Gerard.

n0ne · 10/07/2017 16:54

Love a good tiramisu but have had so many mediocre/bad ones. Maybe that's what puts so many people off?

My absolute favourite favourite pudding is key lime pie. Or summer pudding.

limitedperiodonly · 10/07/2017 17:00

Love my home made tiramisu or anyone who knows what they're doing.

However, shop bought things can be nice. About two years ago Sainsbury's made a fantastic Taste the Difference raspberry coulis trifle with Madeira wine. Whipped cream on top of the custard, with some chocolate sprinkles, which I know some people say is wrong, but it was lovely.

They discontinued it. I am devastated

squoosh · 10/07/2017 17:02

I've never had the love for summer pudding. Soggy old pink bread.

Key lime pie I do enjoy though.

CatSittingMonkey · 10/07/2017 17:19

Mmmmmm I'm team Tiramisu too!!!

MotherofPearl · 10/07/2017 17:25
