Tiramisu...

(Lighthearted)

Aibu to think the tiramisu is the best dessert in the planet by miles? All that yummy squishy goodness, the marscapone, the shot of coffee, the taste of alcohol....

My family think I am strange. My mum said "we didn't raise you to like things like tiramisu". I think she thinks I have ideas above my station....
We were bought up on neon food - fishfingers, chips and angel delight. Grin

In my 36 years on the planet I have only ever met one other who likes this manna, this taste from heaven. Conversely, she was Italian.

Any things you like and find yourself in the minority?

(Just at specialist waiting room and bored Grin )

I love it. So much so that I didn't think it possible to get a bad one.

Them I had one in Jamie restaurant in Nottingham. It was dry but slimy. No boozy hit. I seem to recall oranges in it. And a weird almost kit kat type layering of the crumbly sponge. Far too much cream not enough silky marscapone.

Wrong wrong wrong

ewanthedreamsheep · 05/07/2017 22:20

Love tiramisu! May I also recommend Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Columbian Coffee mousse, as another yummy coffee pud.

squiggleirl · 05/07/2017 22:44

Reading this thread made me think of the loveliest Tiramisu I ever had....in a tiny little restaurant in Dublin....

Then I read this.....

The best one I ever had was in a tiny little Italian cafe in Dublin once... can't remember the name.

And then I read about Dublin 2....which is where the reaturant I was thinking of is.....

I reckon the place you're looking for is 'The Steps of Rome'. It's on Chatham Street. Tiny little pokey reaturant. Pizza sold by the slice, and fabulous tiramisu......

Madwoman5 · 06/07/2017 00:43

Butterscotch angel delight...mmmmmmmm

BeeThirtythree · 06/07/2017 00:53

squiggleirl yy I was reading OP to DH and he described the same little 'cafe type tiny cute place' in Dublin!

Just how good is their tiramisu? Clearly I need to visit to try my favourite dessert!

#teamtiramisu

You can keep your thick skinned custards and melty ice cream...that holy trinity of coffee, alcohol and chocolate...only offered by tiramisu

BoldKitties · 06/07/2017 01:12

Was the little cafe in Dublin with the great tiramisu Il Caffe di Napoli, by any chance? Just down the street from Pearse Street train station, with bright orange awning? I adore that place.

YANBU, OP. I love tiramisu, and I don't usually like desserts. And generally if I do fancy a dessert, it's a very tart, sharp, citrussy one. Tiramisu is the delicious exception.

There was a restaurant in Rome that my family have been going to for decades, that did the best ever tiramisu. Also an absolutely stunning Rhum Baba. Also strawberries soaked in so much liqueur. They really excelled at boozy desserts that'd get you pissed! Grin

BoldKitties · 06/07/2017 01:16

Oh, cross post re Steps of Rome. Also lovely!

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 06/07/2017 01:34

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm! Tiramasue I can a whole in one (using just a tea-spoon) sitting.

BTW. Banoffee Pie is a UK invention...not American. Grin

I love Tiramisu. Strangely enough the best one I ever had was in a small Italian Restaurant off La Rambla in Barcelona, the lady said it was her family recipe and I have never had one to match it since!

Ilovetea33 · 06/07/2017 01:46

Zabaglione is the best dessert ever.

Camomila · 06/07/2017 02:15

I love tiramisu. I'm Italian though so it's expected! Our family uses half ricotta and half mascarpone to make it a bit lighter.

Strawberry and orange tiramisu is lovely, think I got the recipe from a Waitrose recipe card...it was a bit like trifle but much better!

Mollie85 · 06/07/2017 05:22

The steps of Rome! Yes! Thank you squiggle - although I'm there for a week so will have to try Bold Kitties too! Rude not to Grin
Thank you!

I don't like it because I don't like sweet coffee. I love coffee but don't want it anywhere near sugar.

I do love creme brûlée; it's my favorite dessert.

BadToTheBone · 06/07/2017 09:37

I'm one of those strange people who hate coffee but love coffee flavoured things. It's ok because I'm the opposite with strawberries, love them but hate strawberry flavoured things. It's all about balance!!

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 06/07/2017 09:39

Bloody love it.

WhooooAmI24601 · 06/07/2017 09:39

My SIL is Italian and makes the most phenomenal tiramisu. She is a genius. My family don't like it, so I eat 57 servings and then have to undo my jean button.

The Co-Op tiramisu is meant to feed 8 people. It feeds just one in our house, sometimes in one go.

squoosh · 06/07/2017 10:20

Wahoo. Thank you for the Steps of Rome rec. Smile

That's recommendations for stellar tiramisus in two cities I'm in and out of.

TwoDrifters · 06/07/2017 13:42

I completely blame all of you for the fact that I just Deliverooed a piece of Pizza Express tiramisu to my door…

Tunnocksmallow · 06/07/2017 13:52

Love tiramisu!
Also love the co-op profiteroles, full of booze cream and loads of chocolate sauce. Bargain at £2 atm too!

SleightOfHand · 06/07/2017 14:59

Thanks for the profiterole tip, bargain!

isseywithcats · 06/07/2017 15:03

i love traditional tiramisu but in Paris we had some that was made with fruits of the forest as the soaker for the sponge, flavoured with orange liqour and it was out of this world, tried to get the recipe off the chef but he wouldnt give away his secret :(

FooFighter99 · 06/07/2017 15:06

Costco Red Velvet cake (drools onto keyboard)
I don't care that it's made with crushed bugs!!!!

RhubardGin · 06/07/2017 15:08

YABU!

Sticky toffee pudding all the way Grin

allegretto · 06/07/2017 15:11

Shop bought tiramisu is almost always vile! Homemade is nice but there are better, less sloppy, desserts out there!
