To tell my neighbours their bonkers?

We've bought a house and absolutely love it and spending a lot of time and effort doing it up on the inside...as the weather is good we've decided to turn our attention to the garden and start clearing the jungle of overgrown bushes etc...as soon as we bought it we spoke to the neighbours and made it clear that we would be putting new fences up (matching the existing ones as our neighbour had taken out some panels) and getting the tree chopped back...the tree root is near the boundary but on their side...we had some people come round to give us a quote on how much to get the tree chopped back and to clear the garden etc our neighbour decided to come out and give them what for telling them it's a friendship tree and no one will be touching it as she hangs xmas tree lights up on it (there was non this Xmas just gone). I didn't actually know what to say so just smiled and said erm well no we discussed this and you agreed to have it chopped back and cut down a little and then ushered the garden people away from the mad woman...we know we have no legal standing on her cutting some of it down but according to her we can't make her cut it back either? We've checked the deeds over incased we'd missed something (we had already done that before we purchased) AIBU to tell her she's bonkers and to mind her own business? We've had no problems so far and always gone round to apologise for any builders noise but she has completely flipped on this...any advice?

Lol yes we were abit ConfusedAngryShockBrewGrin on moving day as so many little things were testing our patience that day (no running water, boiler was making a noise like a rocket about to take off) I just simply smiled and said a "hi nice to see you again sorry can't chat right now as so many things to get moved in but we'll pop round tomorrow to say hi properly" and got on with moving in not thinking about the bloody green fence and marking her territory...she said to us as I had a box the size of my car trap my hand in between the doorframe and box "o ok well I've fenced off my bit no need to worry you could concentrate on making the house look nice for your husband" Hmm

Desperatelyseekingsushi yes we will be digging up flowers as we made that clear once we moved in and told her softly that she didn't really have any right to put them there. Since the warm weather they've spring up a lot nice to see but not our type of thing.

Yikes, she sounds bonkers. It also sounds like she had a boundary dispute with the previous neighbours and they put the fence inside the boundary ... Good luck! !

Sparklyshoes16 · 17/07/2017 23:29

Thanks anotherday we're going to need it!

"Making the house look nice for your husband" HmmGrin

Imstyledilemma · 18/07/2017 14:15

That's a lovely shaped tree and I bet it looks brilliant with Chrismtas tree lights on.
If you prune it on your side you will ruin the shape.

sorry it's not what you want to heart

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 18/07/2017 14:22

I've only skipped through pages 2 onwards but that's an awful tree that's in an awful place! Needs to be taken away completely .

Lumpylumperson · 18/07/2017 14:37

So when will the fence be in place? Hope it all goes smoothly and without any hassle.

PurpleDragon76 · 18/07/2017 14:42

Be nice to see a photo of your finished garden. Nutjob neighbour can rant and rave all she likes but she has no legal right. Sounds like she's stolen a couple of inches of your garden already.

mistlethrush · 20/07/2017 09:16

'Couple of inches' - what about the square feet occupied by the tree, the silly little wire fence and the 'flowers' ?

I can't believe people are still saying that the tree should stay and that you shouldn't just replace the panel, having shaved off what's necessary to facilitate this!

IHateUncleJamie · 20/07/2017 09:29

Any update, @Sparklyshoes16?

WhatInTheWorldIsGoingOn · 20/07/2017 09:41

That is one ugly tree and it would annoy me every time I looked out of the window that my neighbours tree was in my garden. You want fencing and to do that the tree has to be cut back. There's no argument really. The wire fence around it is totally bonkers. I don't even know where to begin with that one.

Sparklyshoes16 · 20/07/2017 20:33

Lumpylumperson hopefully in the next two Saturdays...clearing the garden first...to make it easier for the fencers to start work and it's cheaper. If we clear the garden ourselves it's £250-£300 less on the quote...neighbours kids £50 each for helping to clear garden plus £5 for each car washed = us saving a fortune and them going bowling and the cinema with their mates! Their parents are very happy to get them from under their feet especially now it's the start of the summer hols 😊

Purpledragon76 yes will post a picture when done Smile

Whatintheworldisgoingon the wire fencing will be rolled up with a bow on it and given back to her! Grin

Sparklyshoes16 · 13/08/2017 22:33

Hello sorry been a mad few weeks nothing much done at mo...my dad had a heart attack so everything been on hold had to go up and stay with him...he's much better now...so hopefully starting everything back up next Sunday...so far neighbour has been fine...we've had the odd scolding look...but just ignored it...first job is to get the fence up which hopefully be next sat/sun.

WhatchaMaCalllit · 15/08/2017 11:58

Sorry to hear about your dad - hope he is well on the mend now. Delighted to hear that the neighbour has been fine so far

hope everything goes well for the garden renovations Smile

ClopySow · 15/08/2017 12:28

Hope your dad is ok and the garden renovations run relatively smoothly.

Sparklyshoes16 · 26/08/2017 23:13

Thanks Whatchmacallit & Clopysow he's on the mend slowly but surely. We've finally got the fence up, the garden is nowhere near finished but we just wanted to get the fence up to have some privacy (fed up of her just appearing in our garden through the gap and commenting on everything we've been doing) . The workmen were great and just got on with it, she came out into the garden and asked "what on earth do you think you're doing?" Their reply was "speak to our employer please" and carried on...for about 20 mins she told us she wasn't happy (as she hadn't been consulted apparently!! ShockHmm) and then went inside giving the workmen evils from the window...we've lost a little bit of land due to her having a massive tree stump in the corner at the top but for the sake of 30cm it's worth it and she will need to deal with it...no more wire fencing or huge gap...and we can just prune the top bit slightly hanging over keep it green...no ugly brown bit for either side too...Putting before and after pics up. Thanks for the support and advice all.

Off to buy Cuprinol tomorrow to match the other fences Wink

Looks great now.

Enjoy your private garden!

lazyarse123 · 27/08/2017 02:28

Looks good but you should have got builders to paint other side of fence before they erected it to make it last longer.

Sparklyshoes16 · 27/08/2017 07:36

Lazyarse123 they've been treated with something to stop them from bulging etc, but the good thing is they just slot in and out. We've got friends coming round later to help get them out and paint the Cuprinol stuff on them...if the fence company did it was an extra £350.00...friends=feeding Sunday roast Wink
