To think "well you don't have to shop here do you?" Isn't appropriate from a shop worker?

Just that really. It's very inappropriate isn't it!? She was a young girl as well and I don't want this to sound 'ageist' but I do find a lot of younger employees rather rude? They seem to have a lot of attitude.

AIBU to complain about this girls attitude?

Hmmm the context needs more detail.

Customers are not always right....

avamiah · 30/06/2017 01:10

Need more information .

VestalVirgin · 30/06/2017 01:11

Are you he shop owner?

Because if you aren't, then why not just take her advice?

It is a stupid thing to say to a potential customer, but that's the shop owner's problem, isn't it?

You can shop somewhere else.

Fauchelevent · 30/06/2017 01:12

I mean from like a managerial perspective, yes. But when I worked in retail I did think that a lot of time. As well as "do I care?" when people threatened to go to a competitor Grin

BadLad · 30/06/2017 01:19

I would complain if I were you. I'd be livid if one of my staff talked to a client like that. If they have an obviously pissed off client, then they go and get a manager to deal with it, or take contact details for a manager to call them back and discuss it.

Perhaps this assistant hasn't been trained how to deal with irate customers, which isn't her fault, but that is still staggeringly unprofessional.

avamiah · 30/06/2017 01:22

Are you there OP ?

littleblackdoggg · 30/06/2017 01:23

There were practically nothing on the shelves in the fresh section, so I went to ask her on the till, she said there has just been a delivery, so I said oh so there is a cucumber/lettuce, etc. she says yes but it hasn't been put out yet. I said could she please get me one she said she can't leave the till I said could she call someone else she said no because the fresh hasn't been put out yet so no one else will be able to get it Hmm I said that there isn't any fresh to buy... She says I don't have to shop there... ConfusedConfusedConfused

She was right tho.

littleblackdoggg · 30/06/2017 01:27

But it's rude?

Are you the girl?

OP posts:
kali110 · 30/06/2017 01:28

but I do find a lot of younger employees rather rude? They seem to have a lot of attitude.
Wtf Hmm

kali110 · 30/06/2017 01:30

Seriously? Someone doesn't agree with you, you must be the other person.
Everytime thread these days.
Maybe shelves just doesn't agree with you?

PenelopeFlintstone · 30/06/2017 01:33

Of course it's rude. They could've made an effort and got you one from the delivery.

user1495025590 · 30/06/2017 01:34

I don't think you were listening to what she was saying ie the new delivery was not on sale yet!

Deemail · 30/06/2017 01:35

Why is it rude? She's told you twice she isn't able to help, it wasn't that she choose not to, she couldn't leave the till and the delivery wasn't able to be put on sale yet. None of these issues are of her making yet she's the one on the receiving end of your annoyance, how's that fair?

mermaidsandunicorns · 30/06/2017 01:36

As someone who has worked in retail for over 18 years it is infuriating when people don't realise how much pressure the "staff" are under!
My employer just recently has seen a massive cut in hours and consequently staffing.
I fully understand it must seem as tho the product required is just out the back but it really isn't!
I work for a major retailer and our fresh deliveries can sometimes take 2 hours to unload. Once unloaded they can be stacked on green crates which weigh a lot and are not just a case of having a quick look to get to what you need.
We aren't being awkward on purpose. Be kind you'll get a lot more back

SenecaFalls · 30/06/2017 01:38

It was rude. But her age has nothing to do with it.

I would ask about your tone of voice, though. Were you rude in the way you spoke to her? If so, that mitigates the situation a bit.

uncaringsister · 30/06/2017 01:39

I've worked in retail and when a delivery comes in sometimes it has to be scanned in as received in the system before they go on the shop floor so it isn't as simple as just "getting you one".
Also if she left the till she'd be in the shit
Could you not have just browsed for a bit?

PyongyangKipperbang · 30/06/2017 01:39

She could have said "Oh it will be out on the shelves by around X time if you want to come back" but apart from that, I dont see what she did wrong. There was no way to get you one and you didnt like it, frankly I rather admire her for saying what I have thought many many times in a customer facing role.

I did once advise a complete arse that the pub over the road did nice food when he couldnt get a table in ours at 8pm on a Saturday night because he hadnt booked in advance and said he would take his business elsewhere. I wasnt even being sarcastic, I was being genuinely helpful but it wasnt until later that I realised how it must have looked :o They never came back to my knowlege anyway!

PyongyangKipperbang · 30/06/2017 01:42

You what?

I find as people get older and have more money in the bank they get more entitled. The older they are the worse they are. Such attitude!

Or is it ageist to say that? Hmm

Want2bSupermum · 30/06/2017 01:42

First of all she can't leave the register. Secondly you can't just put items out on the shelf. There is also an internal control process to ensure items are accounted for and are in line with agreed quality. Thirdly you were rude. She might be young but she knows her job and what she can and can't do. When that happens I ask, 'Do you know when the delivery will be out?'

PersianCatLady · 30/06/2017 01:45

Now you have explained what happened, I think that it makes you seem rude.

The shop assistant told you twice that she couldn't help you because she couldn't leave the till but you continued to pester her.

I am surprised that she didn't say something far worse.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 30/06/2017 01:46

They can't just nip into the back and grab you a cucumber or some lettuce. It doesn't work like that; deliveries have their own processes and storage and so on.

YABU.

littleblackdoggg · 30/06/2017 01:48

Yes okay but did she really need to reply like that? Confused I hardly doubt that's in the training.

She didn't tell me when it would be put out.

OP posts:
WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 30/06/2017 01:52

She probably didn't know when it would be put out. Staff doing deliveries don't tell those on checkouts when exactly they're doing each and every task.
