To think "well you don't have to shop here do you?" Isn't appropriate from a shop worker?

Just that really. It's very inappropriate isn't it!? She was a young girl as well and I don't want this to sound 'ageist' but I do find a lot of younger employees rather rude? They seem to have a lot of attitude.

AIBU to complain about this girls attitude?

OP posts:
araiwa · 30/06/2017 05:45

I had a boss who felt that people who were rude and disrespectful to his employees should not be tolerated and should be told they were being rude and disrespectful. It gave all employees the confidence to do their job well.

I wasnt going around telling everyone to fuck off but i was happy to say no to unreasonable demands

HotelEuphoria · 30/06/2017 05:47

DS was complained about when on the checkout once. The complaint was by letter to the manager of the large Tesco he worked at.

His crime? Asking the customer whether they had a Clubcard twice.

Should have been hung.

Intheknickersoftime · 30/06/2017 05:50

But.... what was unreasonable about this post? There was a million different ways this could have been handled better. Of course outright abuse shouldn't be tolerated. Any manager should step in and support staff. Why is everyone falling over themselves to say how rude the op is being?

araiwa · 30/06/2017 05:52

Because after op was told that this girl couldnt help her, op continued to question, berate and tell her what to do. For a fucking cucumber

TenForward82 · 30/06/2017 05:53

What a weird load of replies! It doesn't sound to me that the employee was very polite, given that she made no effort to help or apologise, and given her final sentence. YANBU IMHO.

Saiman · 30/06/2017 05:55

Personally i find this whole 'as i am customer i can do what i want, demand what I want without knowing what staff can and cant do. Anyone who doesnt do as i say is rude'

She is actually right. You dont have to shop. She isnt going to risk getting in to trouble to nip and get a customer a cucumber. And if you dont like that staff wont risk getting into trouble for you, maybe you need to shop elsewhere.

Intheknickersoftime · 30/06/2017 05:57

And therein lies the issue. Because in my opinion, she could have helped or been a bit more sympathetic and chose to be rude. She didn't have to be. She chose to be. It made her feel a bit better and a customer feel like shit. A lose lose situation. If you go to a supermarket for a cucumber, and then told there are cucumbers but you can't have them then that's going to make you feel pretty shit.

RadioGaGoo · 30/06/2017 05:59

The OP continued to question because she wasn't given a complete answer the first time round.

araiwa · 30/06/2017 06:01

If youre on checkout you cant go wandering off to the back to find produce. Also even if you could and the delivery hasnt been checked in to inventory you cant take it anyway. Doing either action could result in loss of job. Noone should risk their job for a cucumber no matter how many times you ask for one

Sushi123 · 30/06/2017 06:10

The shop assistant handled the whole situation badly - she should have just said they were waiting on a delivery and left it at that, rather than tell a customer that it's here but you can't have it...as for the 'you don't have to shop here' comment - that is extremely rude and I'd definitely complain to her manager. I'm really feckin sick of crappy service!

RadioGaGoo · 30/06/2017 06:12

OP asked employee if item was in stock. Employee confirmed it was out back. OP asked if employee could get item. Employee advised she couldn't leave till. OP asked if another employee could get item. At this point, OP was told that no one could help as stock has not been put out yet. I'm not sure where the bullying was in this interaction to be honest.

Saiman · 30/06/2017 06:18

If you go to a supermarket for a cucumber, and then told there are cucumbers but you can't have them then that's going to make you feel pretty shit.

The shop not unpacking the stock makes you feel shit? Really?

I dont get that. If i go a shop and there isnt what i wanted i dont feel shit about it. Aside from 'oh....oh well'. I dont feel anything.

OhhBetty · 30/06/2017 06:29

I want to know why you were so desperate for a cucumber. What were you going to do with it OP? Smile

Intheknickersoftime · 30/06/2017 06:29

Saimann what are you on about? Why take one sentence from my post and dissect it as a discrete opinion, completely out of context from everything else I've said?

OhhBetty · 30/06/2017 06:29

Grin that should have been

Saiman · 30/06/2017 06:33

How did i take it out of context?

You didnt say someone being rude makes you feel like shit. You said that not getting what you went for makes you feel like shit.

Why would it? I have never worked in retail. But I would guess its not as easy as 'i'll jump off the till and grab one'. So why would i feel like shit?

claraschu · 30/06/2017 06:33

It is all about the tone, OP, and you probably should have worded your request more carefully if you wanted to get the checkout person really desperate to lay her hands on a cucumber for you, come hell or high water.

I have been in supermarkets and asked if things can be brought out from the back. I go to the right department and ask an employee in that area. I am very apologetic and thankful: "I am really sorry to bother you, but is there any chance that someone would be able to check if there are any cucumbers out back that I might be able to buy? (apologetic smile)".

In a small shop, with only one visible employee, I would start with: "I am so sorry, I know this probably isn't your job, but is there someone I could ask to see if there might be a cucumber etc..."

Cailleach666 · 30/06/2017 06:37

I think any shop employing a "young girl" and leaving her alone is irresponsible.
I am assuming as a " young girl" she was 7 or 8 years old?

Intheknickersoftime · 30/06/2017 06:38

I didn't say that saiman, I didn't say it all. I've got no time for posters who cut and paste one sentence out of a number of posts and try and twist into something else.

The correct response would have been. "Im sorry madam, I really can't help you so if you need a cucumber you will have to shop elsewhere"
But it comes to the same thing.

NotACleverName · 30/06/2017 06:43

If you go to a supermarket for a cucumber, and then told there are cucumbers but you can't have them then that's going to make you feel pretty shit.

If that really does make you "feel pretty shit" you need to get a fucking grip.

Husk · 30/06/2017 06:43

Why is it that some customers feel so superior that they don't understand NO!

The checkout girl was not being rude she was telling you the facts.

Its a good job I wasn't stood behind you OP as you would have been educated.

Treat everyone with respect and you may, just may be treated the same.

Go and do a couple of shifts in a supermarket and see how you are treated.

PossumInAPearTree · 30/06/2017 06:46

I agree that it's all about the tone. I would have asked about the cucumber, I would have asked if someone else could get me one if first person couldn't. And if I was told no at that point I would have said something like "ok, no worries". So I don't think I would have got a "you don't have to shop here" response.

She had told the OP that the fresh hadn't been put out so I don't know why the OP then had to say there was no fresh to buy. Sales assistant knew that because she had just told the OP it hadn't been put out.
