To think "well you don't have to shop here do you?" Isn't appropriate from a shop worker?

Just that really. It's very inappropriate isn't it!? She was a young girl as well and I don't want this to sound 'ageist' but I do find a lot of younger employees rather rude? They seem to have a lot of attitude.

AIBU to complain about this girls attitude?

When you worked in a supermarket, OP, were you allowed to leave your checkout and take stuff straight from the lorry?

YABU and the whole queue behind you were probably rolling their eyes.

MrsOverTheRoad · 30/06/2017 02:45

Of course she was rude!

I hate it when people are unhelpful. She doesn't have to bloody WORK there if she doesn't like helping.

PyongyangKipperbang · 30/06/2017 03:03

Queen I was making a point to the OP, not being ageist :)

PyongyangKipperbang · 30/06/2017 03:03

In fact I was trying to be the opposite but clearly failed!

madein1995 · 30/06/2017 03:05

To be homest you sound like an annoying customer. Ok she shouldnt have been so rude (id never be so upfront!) but i understand her feelings. There were presumably customers behind you. So while shed have called someone over the queue would have to wait, get annoyed, and probably take it out on her. Besides which, the produce isnt unpacked yet. Theyre different departments. Its not her job to tell the grocery staff how to do tgeir work. Its likd asking the opticians to do yoy a hearing test. Nor can they go and get you a lettuce and cucumber - theyd have to do it for everyone. You should have approached a hrocery wirker - the checkout girl has nothing to do with unloading and couldnt hace helped. Unfortnately op you are not special, Nd expectong someone to go rummaging through pellets for your one cucumber is unreasonable. You could gave waited, or asked a memver of staff on the floor. Cashiers have enough things to be getting on wirh without being expexted to sort things that they have 0 control over. Maybe you werent rude, but definitely unreasonable. What makes you so special you couldnt wait for a lettuce?

whattodowiththepoo · 30/06/2017 03:10

" littleblackdoggg
I don't know why you're all defending her hmm"

Well you don't have to post here do you?

madein1995 · 30/06/2017 03:13

aldo, not a brag op BUT i'm 22 (so younger geberation). im constantly getting positive feedback from customers. I'm not rude, am helpful and polite. I think nothing of loading, packing and unloading for elderly/those who need it. Ive entertained kids by letting them hold my scanner. Ive taken money from a customers money bag when asked (showinf him every coin I remove) as he has arthritis, when others would refuse. I've helped customers to the car, ran and got them a psck of cheese while theyre unloading, even spent 5 mins of my 15 min break talking to a baby while mam loaded up (lots of kids judt want attention). Not all yongsters are the same. And I wouldnt have been rude like the girl was but your expectations are too high, please try and rememver checkout operstors cant do everything even if they want to, and you really would be better off approaching a floor colleague. Rather than pester a cashier with no knowledge of orher department and who has a queue waiting

LDN17 · 30/06/2017 03:16

but I do find a lot of younger employees rather rude? They seem to have a lot of attitude

Nope. Never seen this. In fact I've only ever seen attitude and snotty behaviour from people who aren't younger.
I always think younger people are always cheerful and pleasant.

LDN17 · 30/06/2017 03:20

And by the way, she wasn't allowed to just leave the checkout. Why should she risk her job just for you? If a queue accumulated whilst she was walking around helping you then she would have got in to trouble by her her manager.

QueenOfRubovia · 30/06/2017 03:20

PyongyangKipperbang

Sorry there old fruit. I have my very thick hat on tonight Blush

QueenOfRubovia · 30/06/2017 03:29

But there's a bloke just behind you, pulling a pallet of coconuts.
Mind passing me one? Let's call it 50p. Deal?

PyongyangKipperbang · 30/06/2017 03:41

Queen No worries my dear Flowers

Autumnleaves105 · 30/06/2017 03:41

I've worked in retail too, on the tills and on different departments too. To be honest the staff on the tills don't have much to do with the shop floor and therefore can't always access what is asked for if they are on a till. Deliveries have to be checked in and then putting them on the shop floor is the responsibility of those on that department.
She couldn't do a lot in her position and runners, managers or department staff aren't always around to call.

She was fecking rude. Only on Mumsnet can a poster be called unreasonable for asking for a cucumber when there is a truckload just in and to be told she can't have one. Ageism my arse. She needs to learn you can't talk to people like that at work.

It's a rude response. Given some of the replies above, I can see why customer services in the retail sector have got so bad. Given that the items you wanted were in stock, I don't think you were unreasonable or rude at all to ask thecquestions as the answers were vague. You certainly were not pestering her, nor are you entitled. It's now entitled expect to be able to buy an item in stock? Also, how is it pestering to ask if an item is in stock and if the response is yes, to ask someone go and get it? I have never been to a supermarket that has refused to get me an item they know is on stock and when advised, I have been happy to wait. I have also worked for a major supermarket and have always, along with my colleagues, accommodated customers when we know the items are in stock our the back. If we knew there wax going to be a delay in securing the item, we would advise the customer to continue shopping and would leave the requested items at customer services for collection where possible. I certainly wouldn't have told a customer to shop elsewhere. I find it strange that someone would admire an employee that tells a customer to shop somewhere else.

Intheknickersoftime · 30/06/2017 05:22

THEN SHE COULD HAVE GOT SOME HELP. IT'S CUCUMBERS, NOT ROCKET SCIENCE.

araiwa · 30/06/2017 05:26

An entirely appropriate response to an unreasonable, rude, arrogant, entitled customer.

Why do people get off acting the twat to people who are working? In normal life, you wouldnt put up with such attitude so why should you at work?

I had a great boss who let me deal with twatty customers in my own suitable manner- it was hilarious watching their pomposity draining from their face when they realised i wasnt taking no shit from their bullying

FinallyThroughTheRoof · 30/06/2017 05:26

She was utterly rude.

Id get sacked for saying that to customers.

Its laughable people are defending her.

Intheknickersoftime · 30/06/2017 05:30

It's no wonder this country is going to the dogs. I remember the days when you could walk into a shop and the staff would actually help you, not take great delight in actively not helping you, accuse you of bullying and get their kicks from demeaning customers along with their supervisors.

KoalaDownUnder · 30/06/2017 05:31

it was hilarious watching their pomposity draining from their face when they realised i wasnt taking no shit from their bullying

Gosh. Not sure you're cut out for customer service if that's how you feel about being asked twice for a cucumber.

The shop assistant was rude. Going by this thread, though, no wonder customer service is so rubbish these days.

araiwa · 30/06/2017 05:38

I offered fantastic customer service to 99% of my customers- they told my boss as much. I did everything possible to help them.

But the bullying ones who thought they could talk down to me and tell me what to do were given short shrift

FinallyThroughTheRoof · 30/06/2017 05:42

You just had a boss who allowed rudeness to customers then.

Intheknickersoftime · 30/06/2017 05:44

When you work with the great British public you have to offer fantastic service to everyone. You really do. You will always get people who you think are rude or arrogant. But you still have to help them. Because that's the job.
