Or is toast with honey a perfectly acceptable breakfast for a 4yo?

n0ne · 28/06/2017 07:00

Just that, really. DD(4) is asking for toast with honey for breakfast. DH is telling her she can't have it. I ask why, he says it's just pure sugar and looks at me like I've got two heads. Surely toast with honey is a perfectly normal breakfast option? It's not like she eats it every day (or in fact ever before).

DH is foreign, if that makes a difference. He has some really weird (to me) ideas about what is and isn't an acceptable meal Hmm

Didn't Freomum say toast without butter is just rubbish.

MsHooliesCardigan · 30/06/2017 08:15

Fucking hell, is this still going? And there are still people saying 'not enough protein' and 'that's just pure sugar' as I predicted 5 minutes in.
DS1 had toast and Nutella this morning, DD had nothing and DS2 had Honey nut Corn flakes. So shoot me. I had nothing and haven't eaten breakfast for 30 years except when I'm on holiday. I seem to have survived with missing out on 'the most important meal of the day'.
To everyone saying that you need a protein/fat heavy breakfast or you will suffer a catastrophic blood sugar crash and then eat a whole bag of sugar, my experience is is exactly the opposite. If I don't eat breakfast, I don't get hungry until mid afternoon.
When I eat breakfast, I'm ravenous by 11am.
Those of you saying honey on toast is fine as a 'one off', do you literally mean once in someone's entire life? Honey on toast?
There are a lot of people out there with a seriously messed up attitude to food who are all too happy to pass it onto their children.

n0ne · 30/06/2017 08:34

I can't believe what a nerve this (lighthearted!) post has touched! Also pleased as punch as I'm usually a total thread ninja.

FWIW the bread is always brown, generally with seeds and whatnot, and proper bread from the baker's as that's what people over here live on. DD doesn't like butter so it would have just been a bit of organic honey on said bread. I am aware there are other, better options, all those people suggesting perfectly-balanced breakfasts Hmm, but that day she asked for that. Other days she gets eggs, porridge, fruit, whatever. Today it was oatcakes with Laughing Cow, for eg.

It also doesn't need to get her right through to lunch as at school they have a fruit break around 10am. Anyone now despairing that that's not enough protein for a growing child, be relieved to know that lunch always consists of more brown bread with cheese/ham/chicken/peanut butter etc. And veg sticks/lump of cucumber/fruit or similar. No crisps or sweets/choc - absolutely not considered as lunch food in this country, for kids or adults. And even if we lived in the UK, I wouldn't give those to my child for lunch. I'm not judging those who do, disclaimer, disclaimer.

I do know how to feed my child Grin But have really enjoyed this lively discussion. Now to convince DH that she can have honey on toast once in a blue moon or just slip it to her on the sly.

Why did you mention a baguette...oh Gawd...we have no baguettes..

I'd mail you one but I think it would be a bat by the time it arrived, sadly.

Mominatrix · 30/06/2017 09:10

what is the difference user Confused? I was questioning why she would think that bread was rubbish - why would a smear of butter on the bread make it more or less rubbish? The key question is to why people thing bread is nutritionally rubbish.

Stopnamechanging · 30/06/2017 09:12

oatcakes with laughing cow what are you doing women?

That's another ten pages about salt content now Grin

bruffin · 30/06/2017 09:14

Moinatrix

She was talking aout the taste (i think)

reallyanotherone · 30/06/2017 09:28

hat is the difference user confused? I was questioning why she would think that bread was rubbish - why would a smear of butter on the bread make it more or less rubbish? The key question is to why people thing bread is nutritionally rubbish.

I think the point was-
toast with butter= food of the gods
Dry toast= not worth eating

Butter definately makes toast worth eating, Rather than any nutritional issue :)

Lovelymess · 30/06/2017 09:40

I had honey on toast everyday before school as a child Blush
It didn't make me hyper or obese lol in fact the complete opposite.

LittleWitch · 30/06/2017 09:52

What is it about honey that is such a hot button on MN? There was a thread a while back about what to donate to food banks that descended into a proper fight about honey Confused.

n0ne · 30/06/2017 09:59

Haha, stopnamechanging, innit, though! We used to get the salt-reduced LC when she was younger, but I can't be arsed hunting for it now. We don't put salt in cooking, she doesn't get crisps, I think she's OK for salt Smile

MsCooliesCardigan

DCs had sugar puffs this morning. Grin

wherearemymarbles · 30/06/2017 12:29

Problem is 99.999% of people havnt got a fecking clue how their bodies work.

So they believe what is pedalled. Remember margarine? So much healthier than butter, even though biochemists knew at the tine the body couldn't properly metabolise trans fats. All these diet fads are because people eat too much and snack on kilograms of pringles and dairy milk

AwaywiththePixies27 · 30/06/2017 12:55

n0ne you really dont have to explain yourself here. There's nothing to excuse. It's a bit of honey. Not crack cocaine. Brew

BasketOfDeplorables · 30/06/2017 13:12

You should get those plain puffed oats, Pixie, they'll make you appreciate sugar puffs. I bought them for my one year old but didn't inflict them on her after sampling them.

JessicaEccles · 30/06/2017 13:20

Butter is just fat

So are avocados...

BTW are some of the MN posters in the pay of the Eggs Marketing Board? I have never ever seen ages suggested as a breakfast food so much.

RodeoDriveBaby · 30/06/2017 13:59

All these diet fads are because people eat too much and snack on kilograms of pringles and dairy milk

What, I can't have milk either now?!

AsnoMudo · 30/06/2017 14:38

I take it your dh doesn't let them eat cereals, as nutritionally there is almost no difference, though contrary to many posters claims honey is healthier than sugar.

If dc drinks a glass of milk they've basically consumed the same as a wheat based cereal breakfast.

natjojo · 30/06/2017 17:13

I grew up with hot chocolate and and buttered baguette with home made jam.

My blood pressure is 70-110 and my body weight is below average.

Honey or jam won't kill you! What will kill you is processed food.

RodeoDriveBaby · 30/06/2017 17:14

Basically all food is "processed", nat, unless you're leaving off raw meat and uncooked veg/fruit.

bruffin · 30/06/2017 17:25

Natjojo
Processed food wont kill you.

Can we please have some perspective on this.
Too much (or too little) food is the problem. Moderation in everything.
Supposedly healthy foods like tree nuts , sesame seeds or even chickpeas are more likely to kill my son than honey on toast ( unless its a seeded loaf)

EnglishGirlApproximately · 30/06/2017 17:30

Stop talking sense bruffin Wink

AwaywiththePixies27 · 30/06/2017 17:32

What, I can't have milk either now?!

RodeoDriveBaby you don't want dairy milk anyway. It's shit since they've took some of the milk out. Have some Galaxy instead. Wink

n0ne · 30/06/2017 17:41

AsnoMudo - nope, no cereals except muesli. Cereal is vitamin-enriched cardboard crap, I agree with DH on that. Plus sugar if you get coco pops or sugar puffs or whatever.

I ate all these things as a kid, I must admit, and I was never overweight and have low blood pressure to this day. But still, there are so many tasty options, why give DD junk?

Nutella has nuts in. Therefore it's healthy. And delicious.
