Or is toast with honey a perfectly acceptable breakfast for a 4yo?

Just that, really. DD(4) is asking for toast with honey for breakfast. DH is telling her she can't have it. I ask why, he says it's just pure sugar and looks at me like I've got two heads. Surely toast with honey is a perfectly normal breakfast option? It's not like she eats it every day (or in fact ever before).

DH is foreign, if that makes a difference. He has some really weird (to me) ideas about what is and isn't an acceptable meal Hmm

mumof I only have the one, but he's pretty much an adult now. I raised him on organic everything, good fats (before this was even fashionable), wholesome everything.

My main (utterly ridiculous) reason for BFing was that I only wanted natural, unprocessed food to pass his lips.

I was a twat of the highest order Grin

AwaywiththePixies27 · 29/06/2017 19:59

Grandma happily gave it to him. I'd say toast with honey is a much better option.

You need to go NC with the monster immediately Wink^^

ComputerUserNotTrained · 29/06/2017 20:00

He lives on donuts and sausage rolls these days, btw.

cushioncovers · 29/06/2017 20:02

Normal breakfast in this house

lostintranslation73 · 29/06/2017 20:03

errrr.... honey is NATURAL...its not refined sugar... when i was a child i had bread literally dripping with the stuff all over the place (no obesity problem at all)... nutella is not right but honey??? its not pure sugar too - its got minerals in it..so....:) go ahead lovely 4 yo!!:)

Maireadplastic · 29/06/2017 20:05

Scareyclown- I noticed that. And strawberry laces for spaghetti.

StrangeLookingParasite · 29/06/2017 20:08

Is this thread making anyone else want honey on toast or at least a crumpet?

Oh hell yes. I want a big chunk of fresh baguette with butter and honey. Maybe tomorrow morning...

msrisotto · 29/06/2017 20:12

Yeah it's got minerals, but other than that sugar is sugar, whether it's refined or not. Nutella has other nutrients too...

ComputerUserNotTrained · 29/06/2017 20:17

I'm pretty sure I read in the Mail that Nutella is poisonous.

I wouldn't touch the stuff now

AwaywiththePixies27 · 29/06/2017 20:18

Its really not Hmm

Good Lord we'll be telling the OP she needs to put her 4yo on WW next.

It's 1 slice of honey on toast. Not five bags of Haribo washed down with Lucozade.

I'm a beekeeper and love honey straight from the bees (some folk add 'raw' to this description just to clarify).
It's antibacterial and antifungal, people who eat a spoon daily find they suffer less colds and infections as well as reducing hayfever - it's enormously beneficial unlike the jams, peanut butter with added cheap sugars such as corn syrup (avoid) and for me artificial sweeteners are a NO

No need to buy Manuka (hugely successful marketing there and they say more is exported than can possibly be produced).
Buy from local beekeepers as supermarket brands are blended honeys from all over the world. Keep it local!
Having said all this, encourage your child to eat different things as balance is good in everything.

The world is going mad.
Honey on toast = fine.
Sugar is not the devil and neither are carbs.
Balanced diet with appropriate portion sizes is the way to go!

CuntTrollingRs · 29/06/2017 20:41

My sports coach who works at a national team level suggested honey on toast as an ideal pre training snack. A 4 yr old should be active in the day so I can't see the problem.

BuzzKillington · 29/06/2017 20:53

God - mine adore honey. It's a very small proportion of a healthy day's food.

LittleWitch · 29/06/2017 21:00

I'm allergic to honey.

Imabadmummy · 29/06/2017 21:17

My kids enjoy banana on toast for breakfast and if they asked for honey on top I would have offered it.

I used to have honey in to sweeten their porridge but ran out and just haven't bought any more....but this thread has encurraged me to add it to my shopping list lol!

Honey Honey

Mominatrix · 29/06/2017 21:22

justliloleme, your comment that "Very little protein in that breakfast but it's fine for a once in a while breakfast" is not really accurate. As I said above, bread with honey and a small glass of milk probably has 8-9g of protein. You do know that the TOTAL recommended protein for a 3 year old child is 13g. For a child 4-8 yo, it increases to 19g.

You do realise that bread is not just carbs and that it is a great source of plant protein?

MitzyLeFrouf · 29/06/2017 21:43

I love the look of honey on its honeycomb, so pretty and so untampered with. Sadly I just don't love the flavour.

There are hipster beekeepers in London who produce post code honey all over the city. I find it fascinating that eating honey local to you can help fight pollen allergies.

bonbonours · 29/06/2017 22:13

I really cannot get my head round how people stress about what is healthy. My kids are 6, 9 and 10.

I ban nothing, my kids eat sugary cereal, or toast and jam for breakfast. Somtimes (gasp) they have pain au chocolat. They eat way too many biscuits, and have what I'm sure would be considered unhealthy snacks.

On the other hand they all eat fruit with every breakfast and vegetables with every lunch and dinner unlike seemingly most kids who come to tea who don't seem to eat any vegetables at all. They eat a wide range of foods including proteins such as eggs, hummus etc as well as processed meats. They all happily eat fruit, they drink low sugar squash, occasional juice, milk. They are not allowed crisps every day (again unlike most kids at school it seems), they have chips ocassionally, McDonalds very rarely.

They are all active, have no problems with their weight or their teeth. Get a grip people. As others have said, sugar is not the work of the devil. Everything in moderation.

Freomom · 30/06/2017 00:19

It's fine just have it on wholemeal toast and spread it thinly. Butter is just fat but toast without it is rubbish. We need a little of everything in our diets.

KimchiLaLa · 30/06/2017 05:46

Oh hell yes. I want a big chunk of fresh baguette with butter and honey. Maybe tomorrow morning...

Why did you mention a baguette...oh Gawd...we have no baguettes..

Esspee · 30/06/2017 07:09

Toast and honey isn't going to provide enough fuel to last until lunchtime. A boiled egg and toast soldiers would be perfect. Smile

Mominatrix · 30/06/2017 07:35

Esspee - please explain what you mean by enough fuel. Calories? There is certainly enough protein. Why would egg and toast be better?

Mominatrix · 30/06/2017 07:36

Freomom, why is toast just "rubbish" - define "rubbish".
