Or is toast with honey a perfectly acceptable breakfast for a 4yo?

Just that, really. DD(4) is asking for toast with honey for breakfast. DH is telling her she can't have it. I ask why, he says it's just pure sugar and looks at me like I've got two heads. Surely toast with honey is a perfectly normal breakfast option? It's not like she eats it every day (or in fact ever before).

DH is foreign, if that makes a difference. He has some really weird (to me) ideas about what is and isn't an acceptable meal Hmm

We start with cereals then have toast and honey if still hungry. How about that as a compromise?

MissMooMoo · 28/06/2017 07:41

Currently eating toast with honey myself.
I don't think its a probelm every now and then.

ComputerUserNotTrained · 28/06/2017 07:45

I assume that's not all she's going to eat all day; I fail to see the problem.

Sleephead1 · 28/06/2017 07:47

I think fine maybe not everyday but how about giving with something else aswell so she has toast and something else fruit/ natural yoghurt ect. If all her other meals are more balanced and she gets good variety of foods i dont really see a problem.

Bumpins19 · 28/06/2017 07:49

I wouldn't exactly say it was the healthiest breakfast in the world and he does have a point in that respect but, in the grand scheme of things, I don't think it's a big deal - like you said, it's not like she eats it every day.

AlternativeTentacle · 28/06/2017 07:49

I work with a young girl

Should a young girl be working? What's that 6? 10?

Or do you mean young woman?

Laiste · 28/06/2017 07:52

White bread dripping with honey? Or wholemeal bread with a tiny scrape of honey?

Quite a bit of difference.

HipsterHunter · 28/06/2017 07:52

Toast and honey IS a pretty shit breakfast nutritionally. Same for jam and maramalda. It's just sugar. But it is really tasty!

Cailleach666 · 28/06/2017 07:55

I'm with your OH.

Pure sugar.

I like to include some protein at breakfast if I can.
Scrambled eggs on toast or cheese.

A healthier option than honey would be mashed banana on toast or peanut butter ( or the two together- delicious)

TheLuminaries · 28/06/2017 07:58

It is a normal breakfast people in the UK have been eating for yonks. I cannot be bothered with people who make a big hoo-ha about food - I think that is unhealthy in itself. Eat in moderation and exercise and calm the fuck down about 'healthy' and 'unhealthy' food.

BeaveredBadgered · 28/06/2017 08:00

Wholemeal with a bit of honey once in a while is fine in my opinion. We tend to do porridge or weetabix in the week with more exciting options like hot cross buns, eggs on toast, pastries at the weekend.
As with everything food related- all about balance.

msrisotto · 28/06/2017 08:03

Well let us not pretend that it isn't essentially just sugar. And if you would baulk at Nutella on toast but think honey is ok, you're kidding yourself. But many people eat breakfasts that are largely sugar - see jams and many cereals. I guess it needs to be seen in the context of the rest of her diet.

DD1 age 3 had toast with honey for breakfast today. She had porridge yesterday and often has shreddies or wheetabix. Never has sugar on cereal. All perfectly normal and balanced i feel. healthier than me anyway

MarklahMarklah · 28/06/2017 08:05

It's not that bad. DD (6) will alternate between honey on wholemeal toast and cereals. If it was every meal for a fortnight, that would be different.

expatinscotland · 28/06/2017 08:08

'What's wrong with Marmite on your toast?'

What's right about it? Marmite is fucking revolting.

It's toast and honey, not a needle full of heroin.

It's perfectly acceptable even if it's not wholemeal bread and more than a 'scrape' of honey.

Orthorexia is alive and well on MN!

LanaKanesLeftNippleTassle · 28/06/2017 08:10

Considering most kids this morning will be eating sugary breakfast cereals, I don't see the problem at all.

Shreddies have as much sugar as a scrape of honey on toast and imo are a worse option.

DS doesn't have cereal for breakfast, he always has wholemeal toast, normally with peanut butter (the really good stuff) but occasionally will have honey, jam or choc spread.

I am of the everything in moderation camp too, I don't believe in banning foods, too many times I've seen banning things lead to really fucked up eating later in life.

A friend of mine was never allowed anything sugary at all, ever, and no junk food ever, No sweets, no jam, no honey, no burgers, pizza etc.
As a result when she was 14/15 and started having dinner money, she spent it all on sweets and shit.
She used to be slim, and now is enormous, because she never learnt to regulate her intake of sugar.

My other friends DS, who is 5, is already demonstrating similar, as she wont let him have sweets v often, as soon as he gets them he shoves them in his face like the cookie monster.

My DS on the other hand, knowing he can have sweets/honey/choc spread regularly, will actually leave sugary stuff, as he gets bored of it.

It's toast and honey, not a needle full of heroin. Grin

Exactly expat.

It's a perfectly decent healthy food in a balanced diet.

caffeinestream · 28/06/2017 08:14

There's nothing wrong with honey on toast! Good grief.

Eolian · 28/06/2017 08:15

It's a perfectly normal breakfast in this country, but that doesn't mean it's a good one. Neither are most cereals. Most people's breakfast seems to consist of refined carbs and sugar. But it's so culturally ingrained that anything else (except the occasional fry-up) seems weird. I'm sure we'd all be better off having a more 'normal', non-breakfasty meal in the morning, like many other cultures do (or did) but can't see it catching on!

roundaboutthetown · 28/06/2017 08:15

Oh, ffs. It's not a packet of Haribo. It's perfectly fine, once in a while.

MaroonPencil · 28/06/2017 08:18

Once in a while yes. Not everyday.

SweetLuck · 28/06/2017 08:18

We've just had (home made spelt) toast with honey.

There's far more sugar in stuff like weetabix.

Eolian · 28/06/2017 08:19

A quick google says that the amount of sugar in a tsp of honey is exactly the same as in a small packet of Haribo - 6g.

Eolian · 28/06/2017 08:21

Whereas 100g of Weetabix has 4.4g.
