To think this is an abomination of a roast dinner!

Friend asked if I wanted to stay for her "famous roast dinner" as she'd cooked plenty.

Now I fucking love a roast dinner so was thrilled...it was Steamed chicken, peas, cheesy spinach, cauli, Yorkshire, stuffing and rice all covered in gravy and cheese with a big dollop of mayo.

Rice...in a roast...with gravy on

I love her dearly but AIBU to think she's fucking insane HmmGrin

With roasting comes roasting smells, roasting (basting sounds etc) Its been a bit hot lately for a roast...but if Im with someone , Id know if they were roasting or not a long time before they served up...also I'd have offered to help, so there would be no mayo, steamed chicken, rice and whatnot on my plate!!! Wink

MagentaRose72 · 01/07/2017 18:19

OP I've got to ask, what were you actually doing while your friend was cooking? Im curious if you were maybe drunk and she thought you wouldnt kmow the difference! Grin Wine

I mean, how else could you be suprised by the not roast dinner?

Organisedchaosalways · 01/07/2017 18:41

I feel unwell thinking about it, steamed chicken! who the heck has steamed chicken with spinach?? Cauliflower?? Rice?? Gravy?? A travesty if you ask me

redladybird · 01/07/2017 18:44

Heave!

Organisedchaosalways · 01/07/2017 18:44

Just hope she doesn't apply for masterchef, please someone be kind and tell her that wasn't a roast dinner in any way or form

Borodin · 01/07/2017 19:59

I haven't read the whole thread, so sorry if this has been covered

I'd like the OP to clarify what she means by "steamed chicken". If it was truly steamed then her host has gone the extra mile, as properly steaming a chicken is far more difficult (awkward?) than roasting it.

I'd bet it was poached, as in stuck in a big pan with an inch of water and simmered for 90 minutes. It's a great way to cook chicken for chopping into chicken meat, perhaps for young children, but as the centrepiece no thank you

Her excuse was "as long as it had a carb it's a roast"

That's puzzling. So a bowl of breakfast cereal or a lunch-time sandwich is a "roast"? And did you seriously challenge her that what she had served wasn't roasted?

Borodin · 01/07/2017 20:16

Beyond that:

Peas are fine, of course.

Cheesy spinach I can't imagine as I think it would end up as a sort of yellow-green slop. Cauliflower or broccoli cheese are yum. I may have to experiment with the spinach—she may be right!

Cauliflower, Yorkshire, stuffing all yes. Fine. But why was the oven on for the yorkshires without roasting the chicken?

Rice. I wouldn't object, but I don't see the point with the stuffing and the yorkshires.

All covered in gravy and cheese with a big dollop of mayo.

Now I'm guessing that it was all plated for you, in which case this is the killer. I could get along with a self-service gravy boat, a bowl of grated cheese to help myself from, and a side of (garlic) mayonnnaise that I could try to pretend was bread sauce. But if all of that was dumped on my plate I would be insisting that I didn't like Italian food and that I was on a strict no-steamed diet.

Just one last thought. How was this "steamed" chicken delivered. I'm sure you won't each have had a whole bird dumped on your plate, so was it carved? With each slice including a nice ring of insipid skin?

It's such a shame that it's too late for a photograph.

ScreamingNotWaving · 01/07/2017 22:03

Mayo and grated cheese, just no!

Rice, on the other hand is a great addition to a roast, you just have to be open-minded. My whole family roast a joint of beef over a bed of rice. It is the tastiest thing! Especially with stuffing, good gravy and lots of salt and pepper. Diet food it is not. Grin

I think it comes down from our Jewish great grandma. And it is no stranger than serving mashed potatoes as part of a roast dinner, I was Shock the first time I saw that.

Bmh54 · 01/07/2017 23:11

Well..doesn't sound like a roast chicken dinner to me..but she is your friend..and whilst you might have a laugh about her version of one..she is your friend???

Texaschik · 02/07/2017 04:42

I get it. OP misheard. It's her infamous Rice dinner, not famous roast dinner😂😂😂. Here in Texas we do roast beef with potatoes, onions, and carrots cooked with the meat and make the juices into a gravy. I'm so sorry you had to endure that OP

Mrstiggywink49 · 02/07/2017 07:53

Does it really matter? ...and who cares anyway what she wants to call it..........

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 02/07/2017 09:42

I love this thread ❤️

I was playing with the kids in the other room so I had no idea what horrors awaited me what she was serving up until we went in the kitchen and it's just occurred to me that there was no roast smells!!

I questioned the fact that nothing was roasted and she said "oh yeah! Hah!" I would teach her the art of a roast...but I hate cooking Wink

She's lovely...but she's absolutely bonkers sometimes...she's fully aware of this matter though

I think she jointed the chicken up and then steamed it (she's a big steamer!)...it was awful but lord knows it was no roasted deliciousness

Bmh54 yep, she's my friend...Hmm

I have a FB friend who I think is Cuban and I've just realised she puts rice alongside her (proper!) roast...it's still weird but at least there's a roast there aswell!

mrstiggywink if everyone on MN took a similar view to "who cares what they..." then there'd be about 70% less threads...

I was ready to forgive most of that until I got to the end - one of my daughters is veggie so has veggie sausages instead and the other doesn't like roast potatoes so has boiled instead (don't worry, she's already been disinherited). But what has earned your friend a firm place at Satan's side was the dollop of mayo (vomit). No. Absolutely not.

My idea of a delicious roast dinner involves the following: ROASTED meat, roast potatoes (preferably cooked in goose fat), sausagemeat stuffing, cauliflower cheese, several types of veg, Yorkshire puds if it's beef or lamb, gravy made from meat juice (or onion for my veggie daughter) and then the appropriate condiments (mint sauce for lamb, horseradish and/or mustard for beef, cranberry for turkey or chicken).
Pigs in blankets may also be added for special occasions, and roasted onions if it's beef.

What your friend served up was a travesty, nothing less.

34AQuid · 02/07/2017 09:51

Its common to have rice or rice and peas with a roast dinner if you're from the Caribbean. But you'd usually have a few matching sides, like fried plantain or stewed peas (kidney beans or other red beans in a spicy gravy). DH is from a Jamaican background and we'll usually say 'are we have a British roast of a Caribbean roast this week/'. Grin.

Plain rice, cheese and steamed meat isnt a roast in any sense, though, is it? Grin

34AQuid · 02/07/2017 09:52

or a Caribbean roast

Nousernameforme · 02/07/2017 10:01

I was just reading this out to DP and my three year old just said "oh thats not so good" and walked off Grin
