To think this is an abomination of a roast dinner!

Friend asked if I wanted to stay for her "famous roast dinner" as she'd cooked plenty.

Now I fucking love a roast dinner so was thrilled...it was Steamed chicken, peas, cheesy spinach, cauli, Yorkshire, stuffing and rice all covered in gravy and cheese with a big dollop of mayo.

Rice...in a roast...with gravy on

I love her dearly but AIBU to think she's fucking insane HmmGrin

Just gonna make you all hungry..

To think this is an abomination of a roast dinner!

Meanie.

ManOfKent · 28/06/2017 19:24

Contact your local council's Trading Standards officer. Champagne can only come from the Champagne region of France; cheddar cheese can only come from the Cheddar region of Ingerland, and 'toast' MUST BE ROASTED!!!!

Misrepresentation at its worst, whatever next - 'tea' made with just water and milk???

Delilah21D00LoT · 28/06/2017 19:27

That is NOT a Roast Dinner - your friend needs to go and eat someone else's Roast Dinner.

deugain · 28/06/2017 19:32

Her next Christmas/birthday present needs to be something like this: Roast: a very British cookbook or Mary Berry's Family Sunday Lunches.

Munchkinbug · 28/06/2017 19:39

I'm really sorry, but you need to unfriend her. Immediately. There's no need for that nonsense. What next? Food served on a shovel? Drinks from a Mason Jar??? No, no, no. This must not be allowed to continue.

This is why our society is so fucked, people! Come on!

Next time you see her, pretend you don't know her. You'll be better off in the long run.

My heart-felt commiserations to you. Now go and enjoy some roast spuds. On a plate.

Fauchelevent · 28/06/2017 19:42

I refuse to wash my mouth out! British roast dinners are shit, never had a good one. Not once, not at a restaurant, not at someone's house. Not once. And hear this - I can't stand British christmas dinners either!! Fucking vile!

Most british-caribbean families put rice and peas alongside roast meat, roast potatoes gravy and so on. Since our sunday dishes (putting rice with a roast) are being called all sorts on this thread, i'm gonna keep saying it with a smile. British sunday dinners taste like armpit.

Fauchelevent · 28/06/2017 19:45

The first Christmas dinner I ever ate with a British group of friends I was HORRIFIED to see there was no rice and peas... but you had jacobs cream crackers? Devilry. And bread pudding looks like cement.

Half of my family is white British and when we have family weddings or functions there is Caribbean food, hot chicken, rice and peas, curried mutton... and on the British side cold sandwiches and crisps, sausage rolls. Why?

Clalpolly · 28/06/2017 19:46

Had peas and rice dishes all the while growing up. Never with a roast .
You hate it. I love them both. Meh.

TSSDNCOP · 28/06/2017 19:51

Fauchelevant that's ok, some fuckers got to eat all the rice and peas. Leaves more for the rest of us.

MumGoneCrazy · 28/06/2017 19:54

I'm welsh, we LOVE cheese on gravy, but only on chips.
I would have left without eating 😂

NoPressureNoDiamonds · 28/06/2017 19:58

Fucking hell.

Edna1969 · 28/06/2017 20:05

@Fauchelevant really? Thats a shame a good roast rocks. DH is fab at the meat (his double rib beef joint is one of my favourites) and I do the sides, together a dream team. There are a lot of poor versions out there which probably aren't worth eating. This doesn't even get to that level.

I don't really mind the Rice (although better with and Peas) in this meal. My biggest problem was how the meat was cooked and the cheese / gravy / mayo combo.

Theweasleytwins · 28/06/2017 20:07

Sounds nice but it's not a roast

QuackPorridgeBacon · 28/06/2017 20:07

A cup of tea with just milk and water has me pissing myself 😂😂

Fauchelevent · 28/06/2017 20:17

edna don't get me wrong, i too love roast potatoes and a meat, yorskhire pudding and such but i have never had anyone cook them as good as ones i've had cooked by caribbeans! And we pair it with rice and peas!

You have to bear in mind that many people who came to this country pair "back home dishes" with british dishes. Shepherds pie, for me, is weird without dumplings. Plantain paired with English breakfast. My indian friend has similar experiences. And british/back home food is a brilliant fusion!

OohMavis · 28/06/2017 20:20

I think a lot of people are imagining Bisto poured all over boiled white rice. NO. That is not how to put rice on a roast.

The rice must be fluffy, slightly sticky. Steamed with the lid on.

The gravy must be slightly spicy, made with spices and juices from the meat.

God I'm so fucking hungry.

Fauchelevent · 28/06/2017 20:22

I'm having DP problems but I'm sure if we had kids they'd grow up thinking everyone has porchetta, yorkshire puddings, rice and panettone at christmas dinner Grin and be sourly disappointed by the lack of yorkies at italian xmas dinners, panettone at caribbean dinners and rice and peas at British Xmas dinners

Cornwallwanabee · 28/06/2017 20:35

Clue is in the title "roast" nothing roasted then it's not a "roast"!!!

Edna1969 · 28/06/2017 20:35

I do think everyones home cooking / childhood memories are biased. There are some folks in the UK who can cook and I'm sure some from any country who can't :-)

mommybunny · 28/06/2017 20:39

Friends don't let friends serve travesties like that to guests.

Seriously OP, had she ever cooked for you before? Had you no indication this disaster could be awaiting you?

EyeRollChampion · 28/06/2017 20:56

I'd need counselling.

YANBU
