To think this is an abomination of a roast dinner!

Friend asked if I wanted to stay for her "famous roast dinner" as she'd cooked plenty.

Now I fucking love a roast dinner so was thrilled...it was Steamed chicken, peas, cheesy spinach, cauli, Yorkshire, stuffing and rice all covered in gravy and cheese with a big dollop of mayo.

Rice...in a roast...with gravy on

I love her dearly but AIBU to think she's fucking insane HmmGrin

When she says that it's known as the dog's bollocks, she's adding in the bit about the dog, right?

Cocobing29 · 28/06/2017 21:27

Someone i knew used to have cold baked beans on the side of a full roast dinner 😷

Imabadmummy · 28/06/2017 21:29

I can get past the steamed chicken and even accept the cheesy spinach (sounds nice) but rice???
Where was the roast or mashed spuds???
Any why on earth would you add mayo when you already have gravy?

Extra cheese I can kinda accept, as long as it's going on the cauli and bit being mixed in with the gravy cose that would be wrong.

Maybe next time you suggest you all go to a carvery instead 😂

Ethylred · 28/06/2017 21:35

Cheese... Please pass the brain bleach.

Jojofjo44 · 28/06/2017 22:09

I think that you should draw us a picture of this abomination OP.
We all love a good diagram.
Can you label each item?

My mum does the best rice ever and it's always served with a Sunday roast and we love it!! But then we do actually roast our Sunday roast so maybe we're the crazy ones Grin

Cheese, rice, gravy mayo and cheesy spinach? Envy not envy

TwoDogs9 · 29/06/2017 04:05

Steamed chicken??
Rice??
Cheese???
Mayo??

Your friend is clear completely barking mad 😂 Sounds absolutely rank whatever it is and is certainly not a roast!

Elledouble · 29/06/2017 07:15

Is your friend struggling, OP? Sounds like a cry for help!

Loopytiles · 29/06/2017 07:18

Don't think have ever had steamed chicken: what's it like?

I have weird food tastes and quite like the sound of that meal, but it was not a "roast"!

shabbyshibby · 29/06/2017 11:02

When she said 'dog's bollocks' she actually meant to say 'dog's dinner'

shabbyshibby · 29/06/2017 11:04

I would eat all of that though. But not on the same plate & it's definitely not a 'roast'!

scampimom · 29/06/2017 11:52

Mmm, I might have a roast dinner for lunch today. Consisting of cheese, bread, a packet of crisps and a can of Coke.

Funnily enough, we're having a roast tonight as well. From the chip shop.

MERLYPUSSEDOFF · 29/06/2017 12:18

Filth!

(I suppose you had to put the yorkshire pudding in the oven so perhaps that was her nod to roasting stuff?)

Loopytiles · 29/06/2017 17:08

Roasted stuffing too maybe?

"Filthy" food can be great!

I once had a roast turkey thanksgiving dinner in the US where, in addition to roasties, stuffing and gravy and marshmallow and sugar-topped sweet potatoes, a bowl of fruit salad (eg melon, strawberries, grapes, kiwi) and can of whipped cream was passed around and served as part of the roast! I was Shock

LakieLady · 29/06/2017 18:02

That is NOT a roast dinner, that is a load of leftovers that she saved for pigswill, before she remembered that the pig had left home because of the poor standard of the catering.

MiladyThesaurus · 30/06/2017 07:54

The thing is, it isn't really about the rice. It's about the expectation and the mismatch of styles. If she'd served you Chinese-style roast duck or pork, you'd have been delighted to see rice with it. If it had been Cuban style, again you'd have been delighted to see rice. If it had been North African roast lamb, you wouldn't want roast potatoes, gravy and veg with it.

Instead you got something that was pretending to be an English-style* roast dinner but contained steamed chicken, rice, gravy, mayo and cheese. That is a recipe for disappointment - and I do think the rice, gravy, mayo and cheese would look like it had been pre-regurgitated for you.

  • and I do mean English rather than British here.
MagentaRose72 · 01/07/2017 17:51

Crying with laughter at the whole thread!

Got to admit Id be really dissappointed...but didnt you guess something was up when it was cooking OP? I mean, a roast smells like a roast!

lizzieoak · 01/07/2017 17:54

Mayonnaise?!?! On a roast dinner? I am speechless.

JoshBear · 01/07/2017 17:59

WTF? Steamed chicken? Rice? Mayo? What craziness is this. Occasionally in the summer we don't have roast potatoes and BBQ the lamb but we have the common sense to know that it isn't a roast when there is no 'roasting' going on. I'm not sure I could be friends with someone who called that a roast 😂😂.

nocake · 01/07/2017 18:00

I got no further than the steamed chicken? Why oh why would you steam a chicken. There's no reason on earth and anyone who does should be barred from ever setting foot in a kitchen again.

wellymelly · 01/07/2017 18:13

Was she trying to tell you something? Had you been staying on her sofa for a few too many weeks/months/ years and she was resorting to last resort tactics ?😂
