AIBU?

To want a film I don't feel comfortable with, turned off?

Knightly · 24/06/2017 21:44

DH and I were just casually sitting, flicking through channels. He stopped on one film, no idea what it's called, but it had already started in full swing.

I didn't have a clue to the story line and neither did DH so not able to fill me in. He said he knew roughly he thought and her identity was different and she was in hospital.

Next thing I know a woman has woken up in a hospital gown screaming and looking at her hands.

Then some nurse brings in this bloke who has paid to have sex (rape), with her. Nurse was under impression she was still knocked out. Nurse leaves and when rapist gets to it, she bites his tongue off.

I said "DH, I don't feel comfortable with this. Can you turn it off?"

"No, ffs"

I said "Well I am leaving the room then because I feel uncomfortable".

"Fuck sake. Fine! I'll turn it off"

I said "Don't worry, I'm going anyway due to the way you're speaking to me".

He said "Well no, it's just always about what you want".

Was I being unreasonable here? It didn't help that I didn't know the story line, so essentially film was just graphic scenes with no plot to me.

Also, anyone know what film it is? Is on now.

SaucyJack Bollocks, "Why didn't you just go and read in your room (or whatevs) without making a fuss?"

Yeah, OP it's your house too, and your tv but stop making a fuss about not wanting to watch a rape scene.

I say make as much fuss as you want to!

Bumdishcloths "It seems like a slightly childish reaction - "I don't like this so you can't watch it either" - and as you've said, you had no idea of the storyline."

It's not childish to be upset or offended by violence, in my humble opinion it is a normal reaction.

Being forced to watch things that make you feel uncomfortable is very abnormal and actually forcing someone else to do something hey are not comfortable with is really unpleasant.

It sounds like utter shite to me! But if the people watching it want to watch it, fine.

We all do this in our family.

DH can't stand Futurama so protests if that shows up, DD loves Criminal Minds but there are certain episodes I just can't watch - so she chooses a different one from On Demand instead, other DD has an inveterate hatred of anything Law and Order.

Some days we end up watching episode after episode of Gold Rush or NCIS because there is nothing else we can all agree on.

You shouldn't have to watch stuff that disturbs you, and you did offer to leave the room once your DH said he wanted to watch the movie. There was no need for him to cuss at you.

I like kill bill. You do not see any rape scenes. Lots of violence with a strong female character though

I don't understand your DHs reaction to you when you said it made you uncomfortable. There are programs that my DP doesn't like that I do, so I watch them on my own. There's occasionally been some films that I've become uncomfortable with and we've changed channel. No way would he get pissed off with me about it. It seems like a massive overreaction.

Kill Bill is, in no way at all, a film 'about rape'.

This. A revenge movie at it's finest!

I have such a girl crush on Uma in this movie.

Yes but it doesn't happen, she bites his tongue off and then the guy that sets up the rape gets his head smashed by a door.

Knightly I am so sorry about what happened to you. It's perfectly understandable you felt like that. Does your dh know about yuour past? if so, I am gobsmacked by his response.

I've never been abused or raped but I still find it not entertainment at all.

JoshLymanJr "Kill Bill is, in no way at all, a film 'about rape'." It's a film that contains rape, unless Wickepeida is lying "She kills a hospital worker who has been raping her while she was comatose", sorry if that is a spoiler!

Then she goes off to get her revenge on Bill. It's a good film

None of that was in the OP though. The OP didn't like a film, asked for it to be switched off, and said she'd leave if it wasn't turned off. There was no suggestion at all that she was 'forced' to watch it - you made that up.

He is going to rape her but is not in the act in the scene as it doesn't get that far

Italian Thank you. It never bothers me usually. I don't even think of it. But some acts of violence towards women make me want to run for the hills, like someone with anxiety stuck in a lift.

It's not often though. No idea why it chooses when to rear it's head

I think you were both being U. The film was only 5 mins in, hardly the middle. You could have given it a chance since you knew your DP was interested. Turns out it's an amazing film but now neither of you may ever know. Do you do this often? Is that why he reacted how he did?

At the same time, your DP should have turned it off and gone to the living room to watch it if he really cared.

Sounds like you were both being a bit selfish.

Just because a film features something in it's story doesn't mean that is what the film is 'about'! The Godfather features a wedding dance, but isn't a film 'about' dancing.

Kill bill is a brilliant film but I'm the same with sex scenes always go make a cuppa when one comes on! I'm a prude and proud!

Selfish to not want to see a scene that makes me feel extremely unsettled?

" a strong female character" who is never named. I don't think the director is a friend to women.

My dear departed dad, bless him, could not watch anything medically upsetting. Conjoined twins, surgery scenes etc. He had to have the TV turned over but he could watch the most appalling horror films.

Sharing a home and a TV with others means compromising on what you watch, sometimes, and that compromise should be that people are not upset or offended by what they watch.

Just an afterthought then is it?
The fact you can see any film featuring rape and not see the rape as one of its main events is staggering tbh.

He said "Well no, it's just always about what you want".

Is there any truth in this?

If not I would suggest you sit down tomorrow and talk about his perception of your relationship.

We all have our limits. What one person can watch, the next person can't. He is unreasonable to be angry with you for expressing your discomfort.
