Mayor Kahan supports this but government officials haven't granted it yet. Surely these people have been through enough without persecution for subletting or visa issues!

"No, absolutely not. This hysteria is getting out of hand. It was a terrible tragedy, of course, but people die in fires every day in this country. Where is the handwringing for them? People die in road accidents. People die from illness. Where is the pop song for them?"

Fuck me.........handwringing????

originalbiglymavis · 22/06/2017 09:16

It's not a case of subletting exploiting people - some people swap council houses (I see cards in the local newsagents).

When we bought our flat it was being rented via council to a couple with a child. We went to have a look a there was the couple, 3 children and a lodger. Landlord had no idea.

squishysquirmy · 22/06/2017 09:17

^ Sorry I meant to say that I don't think concerns about "where will it end" etc are realistic.

The case is exceptional, and I don't think it will set a precedent for other crimes and personal tragedies.
The two issues are NOT completely separate because one will severely hamper our ability to get to the truth of the other.

PunkOfParis · 22/06/2017 09:17

"And the sooner KHAN is replaced as London Mayor, the better." Why? He was democratically elected Confused.

OP, people who sublet council housing need definitely dealing with. They cheated the system and put people at risk as those renting sublets won't have a voice to express concerns or deal with housing problems.

People who had a partner living with them or rented a sublet should be treated more lightly due to humanitarian reasons.

I am intrigued by the harshness of some people here. It's a bit draconian to punish people who have been through the worst sort of inferno, which was made possible because the public and council did not follow due processes.

HappyLabrador · 22/06/2017 09:18

Absolutely not.

PeaFaceMcgee · 22/06/2017 09:18

Yes, the community deserves the full picture and families deserve for their bones to be named and remembered without fear of getting into trouble. A much greater crime was committed here.

MrsJayy · 22/06/2017 09:18

People living and dying in sublet flats or living illegally don't deserve some dignity of being identified because the law was broken of course there should be a one off amnesty.

PunkOfParis · 22/06/2017 09:19

"Fuck me.........handwringing????"

Bertrand looks like some posters are Envy of Grenfall residents. Classy.

MrsJayy · 22/06/2017 09:20

Yes a much much bigger crime has been comitted

brexitstolemyfuture · 22/06/2017 09:21

Ffs setting precedents!

Yes so the next time 100 or so people are burnt alive in a harrowing death reasonable adjustments are made to help account for everyone involved and provide the help needed. Are you Katie Hopkins?

whattodowiththepoo · 22/06/2017 09:21

No of course not.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 22/06/2017 09:21

A one off amnesty is ok.
Subletting needs to be addressed as a problem though, overcrowding is a hazard in many ways.

WorraLiberty · 22/06/2017 09:21

No because they're completely separate issues.

Also, subletting council/HA properties is a big problem (in my part of London anyway), that normally only incurs a pathetic 'punishment'.

GahBuggerit · 22/06/2017 09:22

Its a shame the community aren't considering the safety and well being of these people

MuncheysMummy · 22/06/2017 09:23

This is exactly why they were stupid to do any of the illegal stuff they did and why there are laws against sub letting and illegal immigration etc! Because when tragedies happen it's carnage with lots of lost souls who cannot be identified and nobody knows who actually lived where! Laws are in place for a reason and should absolutely be upheld in this situation else where does it end.

hackmum · 22/06/2017 09:24

Oh, ffs, Worra, can you really not see that these are exceptional circumstances? That it's not about letting everyone who sublets off the hook, but trying to establish the correct death toll, identify everyone who's died and give people who have been seriously traumatised the support they need?

RiverTam · 22/06/2017 09:24

The most important thing surely is that all who perished in this fire are identified and their families told. It could be in the hundreds. If a temporary amnesty helps with that then let it happen. As a separate point, this would be a good opportunity to take a look at the illegal subletting of flats. But right now, let's get these poor souls put to rest with their families.

Agree that the greater crime was housing these people in a tinder box.

Andrewofgg · 22/06/2017 09:24

And suppose one of the injured turns out to be on the run after skipping bail on serious charges? Amnesty for rape or armed robbery?

Illegal sub-tenants should not jump the queue - that would just put a premium on illegal subletting.

squishysquirmy · 22/06/2017 09:26

"And suppose one of the injured turns out to be on the run after skipping bail on serious charges? Amnesty for rape or armed robbery?"

NO-ONE has suggested that Andrew. Don't be ridiculous.

MrsJayy · 22/06/2017 09:27

Hand wringing fucking hand wringing it was an inferno hundreds of people were affected christ know how many died but yeah handwringing

EssentialHummus · 22/06/2017 09:28

Illegal sub-letting needs to be a higher priority generally, with a strictly enforced message that if you do it, you lose your secure tenancy sharpish. I don't agree with an amnesty.

GahBuggerit · 22/06/2017 09:28

yea that was a bit of a shit post

BertrandRussell · 22/06/2017 09:28

"Also, subletting council/HA properties is a big problem (in my part of London anyway), that normally only incurs a pathetic 'punishment'."

Well, in this case it mostly appears to have incurred being burnt to death..........

notanevilstepmother · 22/06/2017 09:29

So notknownatthisaddress do you actually live in London? Or are you one of those that live elsewhere and didn't like us electing our own Mayor because he is erm you know "the wrong sort", one of "them" ?
