To complain about screaming teachers

Since DD went to secondary school she has been complaining about teachers "screaming."

According to her, when a child gets in trouble they are screamed at.

At first I ignored this but it's really starting to unsettle DD.

WIBU to ask to speak to someone about it?

Sadly, it's a pretty common reaction by far too many teachers to just have a rant. My son regularly says the same about some of his teachers. They can spend half the lesson (or the full lesson), ranting and shouting rather than doing anything useful like teaching. Grossly unfair on the pupils who do what they are told and behave as they're losing valuable teaching time!

Ifailed · 21/06/2017 20:08

Screaming? Trying to make themselves heard is more like it, but I think you need to ask your DD to be more specific.

soapboxqueen · 21/06/2017 20:11

You can always speak to the school. If your dd is concerned it is legitimate to raise it as an issue.

However be aware that one child's shout/scream is another child's reasonable 'in charge' voice. Do other children in her class find it a problem?

converseandjeans · 21/06/2017 20:13

YANBU and I am a teacher. It is simply not a pleasant environment. You could contact school - SLT should be helping teachers out with behaviour if it is that bad the teachers are screaming and shouting.

SmileEachDay · 21/06/2017 20:14

Erm. Have you had parents eve? Did you bring it up?

Is it specific teachers?

What is going on in the classes when all this screaming is happening?

I'd try and be a bit more specific if you talk to the school.

SmileEachDay · 21/06/2017 20:17

It's actually not - not one in my school will do this. I'm not sure extrapolating your experience to make this a general teacher bash, is terribly helpful to the OP.

elisa2502 · 21/06/2017 20:18

I doubt they're screamed at. As a teacher myself i can be annoyed with certain students who i will then talk to. Their response is usually don't shout/scream. My colleagues say the same students say the same about then. I think they think a talking to is being shouted at. Clearly not the case

noblegiraffe · 21/06/2017 20:23

Kids often say you're shouting or whatever when really you're just talking assertively or projecting your voice.

Teachers really can't be doing with screaming all day. Too much effort, especially in this heat.

SmileEachDay · 21/06/2017 20:26

noble I don't have time to have a scream, there's some ch content to cover!!

SmileEachDay · 21/06/2017 20:26

*so much content. 🙄

user1498071458 · 21/06/2017 20:26

It's specifically the screaming that bothers her. She doesn't mind teachers being a bit shouty. But a teacher will come in to speak to the class and scream. Assemblies see them screamed at. They are screamed at as soon as they come in (coats off etc.)

It's this one specific teacher or all of them? While I have come across more shouty teachers, they aren't the norm. You'd lose your voice. A whole school of them would be very odd indeed.

noblegiraffe · 21/06/2017 20:30

I don't believe that any school is full of teachers screaming at kids to take their coats off. Not in the slightest.

It's bad for the vocal chords, they'd all have really sore throats and not be able to scream for the rest of the day.

SmileEachDay · 21/06/2017 20:30

They are screamed at as soon as they come in (coats off etc.)

Really?

The teachers must have awfully sore throats by the end of the day....

SmileEachDay · 21/06/2017 20:31

Grin x post noble

Teachervoice · 21/06/2017 20:32

You're sure that she is saying that, among other situations, teachers actually come into assemblies and scream at the students?

I'm guessing this is a premeditated thing, instead of a reaction to the poor behaviour of a student in a lesson etc and they have planned to 'scream' at these students in assembly?

I'm struggling to comprehend this happening if I'm honest. Certainly have never had the time in my own career to scream for half a lesson, not that I think shouting is an effective behaviour strategy anyway to be fair.

iago · 21/06/2017 20:32

A dozen or so years back, I took an 11 year boy aside to reprimand him for repeatedly disrupting the class and trying to to undermine my authority by acting like a smart arse - he had been at Secondary School about a week! I was a little surprised to be told by him that I was 'not allowed to shout at him' !! I did explain that if he thought that was shouting, he had a lot to learn But I did wonder when the no shouting rule came about!

onemorecupofcoffeefortheroad · 21/06/2017 20:32

They do get screamed at - both my DS complained of screaming teachers at their secondary school and this was corroborated by a friend who worked as a TA in the same school.

Angrybird123 · 21/06/2017 20:33

Female teachers rarely scream unless they are very inexperienced. It makes them sound shrieky and kids just laugh. It's completely ineffective. By screaming does your daughter mean given firm instruction without first being asked nicely? I think it's worth raising it but as a query not a complaint. Tone of voice is a fairly subjective thing.

PortiaCastis · 21/06/2017 20:35

Perhaps the teachers need to shout and scream to be heard over the racket unruly kids make but I doubt they scream all day as they'd have a sore throat and lose their voicez

user1498071458 · 21/06/2017 20:35

No, she means screaming.

I'm not trying to sound difficult but it's really unsettling her.

OP posts:
Quadrangle · 21/06/2017 20:38

Maybe think about moving your dd as it sounds like things have got quite out of control at her school. Dd's never mentioned this happening at her comp and I've not heard any screaming when I've dropped things off at the school.

SmileEachDay · 21/06/2017 20:38

So go talk to the school, but I would be very surprised if all the teachers were screaming all day at all the children.

Unless it's some newfangled Tory initiative that I haven't heard of yet Shock

hellobonjour · 21/06/2017 20:39

I would hate to be a teacher.

I'm sure most try and do their best and these days they're torn apart
