Teresa May

Might get crucified for this but....

She won.

She's had a lot to manage a response and a
Plan to deal with since she became PM.

I didn't vote for her. My partner did.

I feel a bit sorry for her.

Anyone else?

Are people seriously trying to suggest that Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May are shining feminist beacons?

MyOtherProfile · 19/06/2017 15:04

Good point Ceto. Neither have done very much to further the cause of feminism.

Dawndonnaagain · 19/06/2017 15:31

Thatcher deliberately had no women in her cabinet. She didn't like the completion.

reuset · 19/06/2017 15:35

I thought Edwina Currie was in Thatcher's cabinet. Though I may be wrong.

LouiseBrooks · 19/06/2017 17:13

Now let Labour get a female leader at some point. Any chance of that?

They've had 2.

Neither were considered permanent though. Becket took the job for a couple of months after John Smith's sudden death and before Blair was chosen. (I think she was Deputy at the time,) Harman has been acting leader.

Barbara Castle was sometimes touted as likely to be the first female PM yet the party never chose her as leader.

Dawndonnaagain · 19/06/2017 17:20

She was junior health minister.

Imbeingunreasonable · 19/06/2017 20:14

. It is particularly nice to see May and Rudd together as once you get more than one woman it gets better - the law of threes actually that we want on boards does work - once you ahve 3 senior women then they are not other or strange or token. Now let Labour get a female leader at some point. Any chance of that?

Mary - I might be reading your comments in the incorrect light here so correct me if I am wrong.... but I'm starting to think you are coming across as a little bit sexist in an attempt to tackle sexism itself. Surely being a leader should be based on merit, skills and having some semblance of managerial credibility, rather than just gender alone?

I don't intend to derail the thread but it seems you seem keen to have a female leader at any cost. Surely it's down to the best candidate for the job who puts themselves forward and gets elected by the party. Nothing to do with gender.

BigYellowJumper · 20/06/2017 03:33

unreasonable

I don't think it's that simple. Women have been held back in our society for so long that many (including myself) believe it is necessary for quotas to exist in order to redress the balance. If you look at any board/government, it is over-whelmingly male and white. That is not something that will go away unless we take specific measures.

The Independent had an article today: www.independent.co.uk/news/business/news/workplace-gender-quotas-incompetence-efficiency-business-organisations-london-school-economics-lse-a7797061.html

makeourfuture · 20/06/2017 06:22

After you crucified Diane on here for her health concerns, a bit of timmidity amongst Labour women is understandable.

Tanith · 20/06/2017 06:38

"Now let Labour get a female leader at some point. Any chance of that?

Nevertheless, they have had two female leaders, one of whom was leader twice.

Loopytiles · 20/06/2017 06:44

Temporary cover is not the same!

And IMO T May was given the job because the Tory men didn't want to deal with the mess, and thought May could do the hard stuff, take the blame, and then they'd take over.

Mercime · 20/06/2017 06:48

I feel sorry for her.

Current labour opposition has terrible record for women in power. Friend worked with jc and said he's borderline misogynistic

BigYellowJumper · 20/06/2017 06:57

Jeremy Corbyn consistently votes in favour of policies that are good for women. He is also in favour of all-women shortlists (which would help sort out the lack of female leadership in the party.)

I'll take that over an anonymous friend of an anonymous person on the internet.

MyOtherProfile · 20/06/2017 06:58

Borderline misogynistic? That's the first time I've ever heard that and I've got a couple of friends who have worked with him.
I still don't get anyone feeling sorry for TM. She chose this road, has made some dumb, ignorant decisions which have made the road much rockier, and now she could leave the road if she wanted to.

FinallyThroughTheRoof · 20/06/2017 07:48

Lots of these handy "friends" around to slate JC.my friend worked with him and said he was very pro women. Honest.

Mercime · 20/06/2017 07:49

Yes I can understand not knowing or listening to me! But he sounded pretty unlikeable from what she said, this was some years ago, he seems to have had a bit of a personality change since then. I guess RL info can influence how you feel about someone. I don't like him at all. I don't particularly like Theresa may and agree shes made some terrible decisions. I just can't help thinking I wouldn't have lasted 2 minutes in her job and like to think of myself as pretty resilient.

Lol funny how the handy 'friends' are suddenly more believable when they are postive about him! I can't say much more for fear of outing but my friend is someone that worked closely with him in the early 2000s

BigYellowJumper · 20/06/2017 07:54

I had a friend who said Jeremy Corbyn used to walk around in a big silly hat and clown shoes.

But then again, maybe I'm just posting random shit on the internet.

derxa · 20/06/2017 07:55

I actually liked old Jezza when he was elected leader- a refreshing change from the smoothy Blairites. However his emoting in the last few days has been a bit nauseating.

7461Mary18 · 20/06/2017 07:56

Corbyn's first shadow cabinet originalyl did not have any women in senior posts and there was massive complaint about that on-line.
news.sky.com/story/corbyns-cabinet-chaos-the-inside-story-10346377

I do think it is time for Labour to have a women leader. Yes I know they have had for tiny periods a woman filling in but it's not the same.

We still just have 200 of 650 MPs who are female. The Tories are not doing better than Labour at getting more female MPs either by the way, in fact worse this time round.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/06/2017 08:33

Some call it emoting, others call it being utterly horrified by what has happened and showing an understandable response.

BigYellowJumper · 20/06/2017 08:37

Yeah, I think it is quite hard to tell what is a genuine emotional reaction and what is playing it up for the cameras. I try not to judge politicians on that basis - how can I tell what they genuinely feel? If politicians cry, people say they're fishing. If they don't cry, they're cold.

Some people do come across as cold, but it doesn't mean they're not doing anything. Others cry but then don't actually do anything in response. I wouldn't care if Theresa May was cold but then actually had the guts to meet the victims or to provide a more useful response.

Even Jeremy Corbyn basically said that it's not about how you appear to feel, but your practical and logical response to matters.

paxillin · 20/06/2017 08:39

I agree, emoting is belittling it and calling it false; his is exactly the same reaction I have seen all around me in RL when the news broke. I don't think everyone was faking it.

JenniferYellowHat1980 · 20/06/2017 08:49

I do wonder how much pressure one person can manage but if she can't handle it she could always stand down. She's too proud and arrogant to fall on her sword so she'll have to continue to face it I suppose.
