Grenfell should not have happened. Austerity, cost cutting, ignoring the poor, helping the rich get richer, all this led to the horrific circumstances.

Tory response? Theresa May didnt even speak to the survivor residents. A tory minister cited security reasons, yet the Queen managed to come out and talk to the residents without issue.

Tories have form for voting against safety issues in housing. All to benefit the wealthy. It is utterly shameful that these are the people that run our country, who care only for the rich.

Damn, that really is murder for the sake of a few thousand quid then as they were banned.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 18/06/2017 15:27

It's shameful and it's changed the way I look at my city

London economy benefits from the rising house prices , the taxes paid , the profits made from seeking off Brownfield land

Then we turn round the poor people many of whom keep things running and say 'you don't deserve to live here , you are a nuisance , your complains about safety are not valid'

You know what gets me is that plot of land is hardly that desirable . It's overlooked by 2 main roads and there is no green land.

It's so easy to blame people but as a society this is a massive massive wake up call . I feel ashamed

Council giving just £10 to survivors who have nothing,

Charities and volunteers can't access the the £5 million donation.

2 women who were protesting the fire safety issues and were sent bullying letters by the Tenant Management Organisation threatening legal action if they didnt stop. Those 2 brave women are now missing, feared dead. This is the stuggle between the powerful and the weak, the rich and the poor and dare I say it, the fact that a lot of the residents were non-white will also have some bearing on the lack of action too.
I agree. It's shameful. Angry

Jesus, WTF is Teresa May up to? Precisely what the fuck is the point of dangling £5M in front of some seriously desperate people if you don't have people on the ground trying to verify their identities and get the money to them?

Complete ineptitude

Bolshybookworm · 18/06/2017 15:53

I think this very much is layable at the the door of government and the local council. They are ultimately responsible for housing social tenants. Where is the quality control? Why weren't the works checked off when they were finished by a member of the council? Who decided that allowing private contractors to vouch for the safety/quality of their works was a good idea?
Not necessarily saying that heads should roll over this, but this incident has highlighted some fairly massive flaws in the system that need to be addressed now to prevent further incidents in the future. The government has to be responsible for this, as this is a national issue that will require extra funds that most local councils (which have been cut to the bone) no longer have. Would you trust the private sector to carry out these checks anymore? I certainly wouldn't!

TheWitchAndTrevor · 18/06/2017 15:55

I think £5 million referenced is the donations sent by the public for immediate us for the survivors.

the £10 is given to the survivors, from the council once in a hotel, a hotel that is only providing breakfast.

Natsku · 18/06/2017 15:57

Yes Bolshy at the very least, this should make big changes in the way things are run re: private contractors. This kind of thing should never happen again, should never be possible to happen again, and that means proper inspections of works by public services e.g. fire services NOT the private contractors themselves or other private services who don't have the social responsibility that public ones do.

Natsku · 18/06/2017 15:58

A tenner? A fucking tenner is all they're getting? Despicable.

TM has now said survivors will get £5500 in their accounts on monday and £500 cash

Is this how it's going to be though? The situation go viral only then something gets done.

It's still disgraceful there is/has been any effort made by the council.

They have needed poking with a stick all the way Angry

If money is going in their bank account (and £5k won't last long when you are starting from scratch) , I hope someone is sorting out new bank cards, ID etc for them.

GloriaGilbert · 18/06/2017 19:59

If money is going in their bank account (and £5k won't last long when you are starting from scratch) , I hope someone is sorting out new bank cards, ID etc for them.

I saw a news segment over the weekend about such practicalities and I believe that the banks are waiving their normal ID requirements for the victims.

user1497800655 · 18/06/2017 20:03

So is the 5k an interest free loan or similar?

I dont see how the banks can waive banking regulations either regarding ID's as that is a big no-no and part of the counter terrorism offensive in this country

FinallyThroughTheRoof · 18/06/2017 20:11

No i dont think it's a loan.

AliceTown · 18/06/2017 20:13

I read elsewhere that when a building is demolished, people are given £5.5k, so this is essentially that payment.

GloriaGilbert · 18/06/2017 20:13

A loan would be silly.

The sums involved are small enough to sidestep KYC requirements in a crisis, I suppose. They'll be time enough to verify the account later.

7461Mary18 · 18/06/2017 20:21

The 50% of us who pay tax in the UK are the ones paying the Government's contribution and we are happy to do so and I am sure the other 50% of people are patting us on all the back for doing it.

Also presumably some tenants will have contents insurance so I hope their insurers are getting on with making payments out. Also the buildings insurance possibly covers any elements the tenants have attached to the fabric so the tenants might possibly have claims there too although less likely.

After the £8,000,000 refurb this is what they had.
