Aibu to be so angry with the tory government regarding grenfell

Grenfell should not have happened. Austerity, cost cutting, ignoring the poor, helping the rich get richer, all this led to the horrific circumstances.

Tory response? Theresa May didnt even speak to the survivor residents. A tory minister cited security reasons, yet the Queen managed to come out and talk to the residents without issue.

Tories have form for voting against safety issues in housing. All to benefit the wealthy. It is utterly shameful that these are the people that run our country, who care only for the rich.

Sorry, someone on another thread.

SylviaPoe · 17/06/2017 22:49

I'm not sure I'm surprised by it, Smellbellina, because I've had a year to get used to it.

I assume it is a combination of millennial psychology and the influence of the internet.

I'm just glad the generation after the millennials seem to be very different.

Smellbellina · 17/06/2017 22:54

What do you mean by millennial psychology sylvia ?
From my experience that covers an unusual range of people whose experiences are vastly different.
A useful tag line none the less

SylviaPoe · 17/06/2017 22:58

I think it is self explanatory. There are cultural shifts between the generations.

SoftSheen · 17/06/2017 22:59

Whilst I am happy to blame the Tory government for a lot of things, in this case I think the blame should lie squarely with Kensington and Chelsea council, who were happy to make drastic cuts to local services whilst giving rich local residents tax rebates.

Smellbellina · 17/06/2017 23:05

You think saying "millenials" is self explanatory? Makes me wonder how much you know about a line you like to bandy about but refuse to explain tbh.

CrossWordSalad · 17/06/2017 23:06

Of course it's down to what people have chosen to believe, support and vote for. Which part of democracy do you not understand?

This seems to boil down to "Labour voters good, Tory voters bad". Good luck with that as a political and social analysis.

You feel it's people "stoking" division?

It was your post I was referring to as stoking division. I believe we have more than one expression available for this, I chose the one I wanted to use, and no I didn't mean flames, I meant division.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 17/06/2017 23:07

Interesting thread

I started off agreeing that to use this issue for political debate

However 3 days in I am aghast . Whilst the people that managed this building are primarily to blame , I saw today the letter that the council hand delivered to residents the very day after this tragedy . The letter was complaining about children playing ball games / but the way it was worded Hmm

We want our nurses and security guards and Tesco workers and taxi drivers and teachers . But we want them miles and miles away - not near Holland fucking park or Notting fucking hill

It's like how dare they live here , and if they must live here they need to STFU

This has been such an eye opener

And it's a lot easier to get angry about politics than it is to think about the people that died in such horror and the people that will have the flash backs for the rest of their lives /

Smellbellina · 17/06/2017 23:12

This seems to boil down to "Labour voters good, Tory voters bad". Good luck with that as a political and social analysis.
How glib. How about Corbyn proposed a bill for safe social housing and Tory MP's, including a lot of land lords, voted it down. How about, standing by what you vote for.

SylviaPoe · 17/06/2017 23:16

Shouting, I just find it incomprehensible that the response to the tragedy has been handled so badly.

I live in Manchester and felt calmed by how well the council and officials in general responded. It was very distressing to go through Victoria afterwards but it was dealt with so sensitively. It felt like all the issues were being taken care of and that the city was a welcoming and calm place that was being respectful towards the victims and their families.

The complete contrast with how people are being treated in Kensington has been very upsetting.

"This seems to boil down to "Labour voters good, Tory voters bad". Good luck with that as a political and social analysis. "

Don't be ridiculous! Plenty of appalled Conservative voters are just as disgusted. Michael Portillo, for example.

CrossWordSalad · 17/06/2017 23:18

I don't think it's worth my while having a conversation with someone with such intolerant and simplistic views Smell

CrossWordSalad · 17/06/2017 23:20

Tanith My post you c&p's was about a specific pp's comment, not a general point.

Shouting, that 'no ball games allowed' sign that always sits miserably on walls of council blocks, heaven forbid kids in council properties should play. So fucking depressing

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 17/06/2017 23:35

We have those signs here and the kids ignore them and no one minds Wink

It was how it was worded 'living here is a privilege and that privilege can be taken away' to fucking hand deliver that the day later . It spoke volumes about how they viewed the tenants .

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 17/06/2017 23:36

Sylvia / exactly and I don't want to make it political but it's hard not to Sad

chocolatespiders · 17/06/2017 23:39

Was there really a letter to the tower block about children playing ball games Shock

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 17/06/2017 23:41

You don't hand deliver a note like that the day after that event . About kids playing Angry

caroldecker · 18/06/2017 00:05

How about Corbyn proposed a bill for safe social housing and Tory MP's, including a lot of land lords, voted it down. How about, standing by what you vote for. see Channel 4 link upthread. Everything proposed is in legislation.
but every Tory voter too the social housing residents of K&C have a vote every year to remove KTCMO, have done since 1996. This is not all residents in K&C, only the social housing ones. In 2016, 24 voted against them carrying on, 4 against in 2015, 34 in 2014. If the tenants do not vote against them, how can Tory voters be blamed for keeping them in place?

chocolatespiders · 18/06/2017 00:07

The letter doesn't mention Grenfell. Is it to nearby tower blocks?

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 18/06/2017 00:09

It's to the neighbouring block

So it's to people who would have been up all night helplessly watching

And it's how they speak to them . The tone

About kids playing !

chocolatespiders · 18/06/2017 00:12

Oh dear that's shameful. I feel the need to write to them about this letter.
I love hearing kids playing outside, what do they expect when the children have no gardens.

GreenTreesWithLeaves · 18/06/2017 00:17

The more I learn about (the lack of) tory reponse, the angrier I feel. Such contempt for the poor. That ball game letter has really upset me. So quick to act when children play ball games, so quick to withdraw children's services, so quick to act giving rebates to the rich, yet not bothered about the appalling health and safety issues, not bothered in the slightest about the appalling response to this tragedy.

This really is another Hurricane Katrina moment. If the demographic was different, the response would no doubt have been much quicker.
