AIBU to say that Nikki Morrison and Sherrie Ryder of the BBC are lazy-assed 'journalists' and that it's possible that BBC have just ruined my oldest and closest friendship?

Yes it's a TAAT, but it's a thread about MY thread. So for thise of you who haven't read my previous thread, I was due to be a bridesmaid on Saturday when my best friend decided she couldn't go through with it and I posted on here for some advice about what to do.

The MN massive provided me with some excellent advice and we got through an extremely difficult day. I received an email from MNHQ to say they had received a media request from the BBC who wanted to run the story, I politely declined. Now it would appear they have run the story and they have quoted me (and other posters on the thread) without my permission. Yes, I realise this is a public thread and that's they didn't need my permission but I'm still pissed off!

So I just needed to call the bride and tell her why her story in on the BBC website and needless to say she is not a happy bunny. Yes I know I deserve it but I REALLY needed advice!

Anyway BBC, YOU ARE CUNTS AND I WANT MY LICENSE FEE BACK! ( Bet they don't publish this thread)

And the BBC didn't ruin your friendship. You did when you posted a thread on the biggest parenting website on the planet.

Someone you knew could have read it.

It could have gone to the daily mail - this thread probably means it will now. So well done on that.

You might want to consider why you are still stoking the drama even after the BBC taking the story and why you didn't just quietly contact HQ and tell them what had happened and ask for the thread to be pulled.

OnionKnight · 15/06/2017 06:34

It is lazy journalism but at the same time you knew that journalists trawl this website, I feel sorry for the (not) bride and groom TBH.

Babbitywabbit · 15/06/2017 06:42

A number of us on the first thread predicted this would happen. In fact good old MNHQ deleted one of my posts for suggesting the thread was daily mail fodder Hmm Hmm

It's lazy journalism but hardly any great surprise. Dont ever post anything on MN that you aren't happy for people to know about ... it's not a place for private personal advice or conversation.

Zafodbeeblbrox10 · 15/06/2017 06:49

What do you expect from the people who protected jimmy Savile for five decades? And who produce eastenders...

AuntieStella · 15/06/2017 06:57

It's shitty because even though they didn't have to ask, they did. And then ignored the answer.

That is reprehensible.

userIamNOTaNUMBER · 15/06/2017 06:58

The BBC have done a Daily Mail. Things are getting bad. And what's 'lazy-assed'? Do you mean arsed, OP? Perhaps you should go on Jeremey Kyle next.

userIamNOTaNUMBER · 15/06/2017 07:14

In fact, I'm trying to find the BBC article, and all I can find in Google is this thread!

userIamNOTaNUMBER · 15/06/2017 07:16

And what's a TV License, OP? Do you mean a Licence? Definitely Jeremey Kyle fodder.

RestlessTravellerTheSequel · 15/06/2017 07:17

Fucking hell, 'I know it's a public forum' is becoming the new 'cancel the cheque'. I said it in my original post and a number of posts since. What's made me angry is that they aske, I refused and they ignored me.

And I'm not stoking the drama, I posted primarily to warn others and secondly to have a pop at the journalists on the very site they scan for 'stories'

And no I didn't mean lazy-arsed because I'm not British.

NeverTwerkNaked · 15/06/2017 07:18

i would have expected more of the bbc, that is very lazy journalism

If you want to PM me a link to the story I would like to complain, but at present I can't see it when i search!

RestlessTravellerTheSequel · 15/06/2017 07:22

Sorry about the spelling of licence. That's the Yank in me too.

Shock

Ah you behaving like a dick for a bet? Why is everyone so tetchy this morning?

ArtemisiaGentilleschi · 15/06/2017 07:46

Unless you are very new to social media you know that journalists scour websites like MN for scurrilous stories.

Even if you'd never set finger into a forum before Saturday you were told often enough on your original thread that your story, which read like a Julia Roberts' film script, was so unique and identifying it might have been an idea to either pull it or at least be more circumspect. You chose not to.

The only person who has ruined your friendship is you. And I'm not surprised. Unfortunately what you've done is the 21st century equivalent of having your best friend tell you a secret, you promising not to tell and then running round telling everyone.

SerfTerf · 15/06/2017 07:47

Couldn't agree more. Every word the truth. Maybe everyone's been drinking? Wink

hackmum · 15/06/2017 08:17

OP, did you ask your friend's permission before posting her story on a public forum read by thousands of people?

If not, how exactly does that make you morally better than the BBC journalists "stealing" the story and posting it on the BBC news website?

CheeseQueen · 15/06/2017 08:26

At risk of the thread sounding repetitive and being accused of it being "cancel the new cheque", I'm sorry but it IS a public forum on here so hardly surprising things get picked up by the media.
THIS is one of the biggest media outlets going that you've posted on - it's one of the biggest international sites going, not a cosy corner of the internet.
Yes, it's crap when all you want is advice, but it's something that people really need to remember.

Sunnymorningwithbacon · 15/06/2017 08:27

What hack mum said.

Did you ask your friends permission?

CheeseQueen · 15/06/2017 08:34

Oh, and seriously, I know you want to "warn" people, but where is the sense in bringing it up again if you say it's nearly ruined your friendship?
I hadn't even seen the BBC article but I have now - you've just brought it to the attention of even millions more people.
Then people wonder why things get pulled off here for "lazy" clickbait articles?
I think your answer lies there. Traffic.

NewPapaGuinea · 15/06/2017 08:37

Would stuff like this be covered under copyright law? Or can the T&Cs be amended to say everything is copyrighted and they need permission from the original poster before it can be republished?

Sunnymorningwithbacon · 15/06/2017 08:38

No it wouldn't be covered under copyright law.

fluffiphlox · 15/06/2017 08:43

Your poor friend.

YouWouldntLetItLie · 15/06/2017 08:44

Why haven't MN pulled the original thread? It's still there!

2014newme · 15/06/2017 08:45

Meh your friend would have been unlikely to see it if you hadn't told her.
Why are you slagging them off when it's you who posted your friends story online?
They've done nothing wrong and your friends name was not mentioned in the article

Sparklingbrook · 15/06/2017 08:45

Why would MN want to get involved in the permission thing? Every thread shared by the wider press is good publicity and will draw people to this site.
