To ask people to stop swearing so much

Frankly, the language of some of the posters on this site is disgusting and I wonder if they talk like this in front of their children. I also wonder if their parents would be proud of how they post on the internet. Swearing every time isn't big and it isn't clever. It makes people come across as uneducated chavs.

AIBU to ask people to clean up their act and stop swearing?

It seems people are quite shrill and defensive about their "right " (wow)to swear here.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 19/06/2017 14:21

I agree with you Lass - no one should have suggested that you in any way deserved to be called that.

upperlimit · 19/06/2017 14:24

Shrill? Is it necessary to be dismissive in such a gendered manner? Shrill is offensive to such a degree that a casual 'fuck' and 'bollocks' cannot compete.

nina2b · 19/06/2017 14:27

Gendered? Men can get shrill too.
Hmm

upperlimit · 19/06/2017 14:30

If a man is being shrill he is being admonished for being too feminine, shrill referring to a high pitched voice and every thing. But go ahead a knock yourself out.

paxillin · 19/06/2017 14:34

Oh dear, have we broken the sugar and spice and all things nice rule? Shrill is a sexist insult almost exclusively used against women who rise above their station. A lot more insulting than fuck.

nina2b · 19/06/2017 14:36

Well, if people are shrilly shrieking about their right to swear, others will judge them accordingly.

upperlimit · 19/06/2017 14:39

Bless.

paxillin · 19/06/2017 14:40

The only one I imagine a bit shrieky is you, nina2b.

JassyRadlett · 19/06/2017 14:41

Didn't stop one poster suggesting I deserved to be called a fucking cunt though did it?

I can't speak for anyone else. People can be arseholes whether they swear or not. However I want to apologise to you because when I saw that post originally I read it totally differently and with the opposite interpretation. However having reread I think your interpretation is just as likely and it should have been challenged by me and others in that case.!

nina2b · 19/06/2017 14:43

I am always cool and calm. FTR.Smile

babybubblescomingsoon · 19/06/2017 14:45

nina - everything ok? It's called a joke.

JassyRadlett · 19/06/2017 14:50

How do you know they're shrilly shrieking? Try imagining all the posts being read out by Moira Stewart. It may change your understanding of the posts a bit, as well as enhancing your own experience of the site.

nina2b · 19/06/2017 14:51

I see no jokers here...

nina2b · 19/06/2017 14:54

In the absence of a person speaking in real life, we have to use the language used by posters, in order to determine tone. Surely everyone knows that.
I definitely detected some indignant shrieking and "raised voices"...

nina2b · 19/06/2017 14:56

But anyway, I mustn't distract from your debate. Gotta go.

JacquesHammer · 19/06/2017 15:05

Translated as "I have no sentient point and am losing the argument ergo I will pretend I have way more interesting and pressing things to do whilst feverishly clicking refresh to see whether I got the last word" Grin

paxillin · 19/06/2017 15:08

Could also be translated as "I am too busy for this shit".

paxillin · 19/06/2017 15:08

Sorry, naughty word. I meant to say "I am too important for this faecal matter".

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 19/06/2017 15:09

Thanks Jassy and Thumbwitch.

JassyRadlett · 19/06/2017 15:21

I definitely detected some indignant shrieking and "raised voices"...

Whereas I detected the opposite, at least from the sweary side.

Projection. Interesting old concept.

Oldgranny · 19/06/2017 15:41

Since when did foul language improve anything?

RebelRogue · 19/06/2017 15:50

It's too hot to shrill, shriek or whatever.

paxillin · 19/06/2017 15:50

How often is "fuck that" shrieked?

How often is "oh my goodness" shrieked?

TheDogAteMyGoatskinVellum · 19/06/2017 15:53

Funny the way the anti swearers seem to be the ones resorting to the class and gender based insults.
