To ask people to stop swearing so much

Frankly, the language of some of the posters on this site is disgusting and I wonder if they talk like this in front of their children. I also wonder if their parents would be proud of how they post on the internet. Swearing every time isn't big and it isn't clever. It makes people come across as uneducated chavs.

AIBU to ask people to clean up their act and stop swearing?

Here, I mean as in Oh do swear-swear-aka-limited-vocab, dear...!!

JassyRadlett · 18/06/2017 13:45

Nina, you are making very little sense.

nina2b · 18/06/2017 13:48

Haha. At least I am not resorting to swear words.

JacquesHammer · 18/06/2017 13:52

No, but the ones who are sound way more sentient and erudite than you do. Go figure.

JassyRadlett · 18/06/2017 13:53

No clarification? What a pity not to have the means to express oneself clearly. Maybe a few extra words would help you get your point across.

Why the 'resorting to' language, by the way? I've raised this a couple of times on the thread.

I agree that ODFOD is a Mumsnet 'classic' and about as original as are you on glue, cancel the cheque, etc.

RebelRogue · 18/06/2017 13:57

@nina2b while the English language is somewhat limited in it's swearing, thus limiting the vocabulary, other languages are a lot more inventive and use a wide range of vocabulary.
Actually given the made up swear words mumsnetters come up with, I don't think limited vocabulary is something you need to moan about. If anything, they are expanding their vocabulary and other people's.

WanderingTrolley1 · 18/06/2017 14:01

I don't swear and don't appreciate it when others swear I'm front of my children. I find it disrespectful and saddening.

I do swear and I don't appreciate when others swear in front of my children. So there we are.

Anyone who uses "Go figure."is very reary erudite!

rubbish. You just dont like it and are trying to justify your opinion.

RebelRogue · 18/06/2017 14:43

Oh no dearie me I made a mistake so my point is completely irrelevant. Btw English is my second language, what's your excuse?

JacquesHammer · 18/06/2017 14:46

On the contrary - using a colloquial phrase to make a point is an acknowledged tool in using written English.

You're making yourself look really very silly Nina. I suggest you work on the less is more theory of posting.

Otherwise people are going to judge you. And it won't be favourably Grin

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 18/06/2017 16:06

Lass, reclamation means I can use the word as I choose. No, I'm not keen on it being used to tell women they're breeders or to let men know that they're only as good as a breeder

Humpty Dumpty like words can mean whatever the user thinks they mean or wants them to mean. You are still avoiding how this squared with the far more prevalent use as a horrible insult.

It is certainly entitled and ill mannered to expect a club with nearly a million members to change around one's own norms

Did I ask that? Don't think so. I did say I don't like swearing; The Thick of it aside i don't think it adds anything. Athough I see one poster thought I deserved to be called a fucking cunt.

As an insult it is useless.

I'd bet money that all of say Theresa May, Cameron, Thatcher, Trump , Farage , Ched Evans , Hilary Benn, Tony Blair for example will have been called a fucking cunt on here. I'd bet money that say Jessica Ennis-Hill, Ched Evans' victim, Caroline Criado-Perez, Mary Beard, Germaine Greer, Dianne Abbot have been on other sites. It tells you nothing other than the person using it dislikes the other person. Who is to tell who exactly is "the fucking cunt?"

nina2b · 18/06/2017 16:28

My "mistakes" were due to typing in haste in my iPhone; I cannot speak for the rest of you.

nina2b · 18/06/2017 16:30

I spot errors made, I presume, due to ignorance. It goes with the territory, I think.

nina2b · 18/06/2017 16:31

... ON my iPhone;

Grrrrrrrrrrrrr

nina2b · 18/06/2017 16:32

Excellent post, LassWiTheDelicateAir. I concur.

Is that in the same way my dd has to put up with being called spaz but still uses the word herself and calls her wheelchair her spaz chariot?
I do not like it being used to belittle women, I've said this, however, if I choose to use it with care, then that's up to me and still comes under the reclamation banner.

RebelRogue · 18/06/2017 16:36

@nina2b well aren't you a clever little cookie?

JassyRadlett · 18/06/2017 16:42

Did I ask that? Don't think so.

No but others have. Including the OP.

JassyRadlett · 18/06/2017 16:45

Nina is giving us a lovely lesson in irregular verbs. I make typing errors, you are ignorant, they are thick.

I'm not sure which of her typing errors are responsible for the posts that make no sense, though. I do have plenty of experience in an iPhone replacing its with it's. I've finally trained it.
