To ask people to stop swearing so much

Frankly, the language of some of the posters on this site is disgusting and I wonder if they talk like this in front of their children. I also wonder if their parents would be proud of how they post on the internet. Swearing every time isn't big and it isn't clever. It makes people come across as uneducated chavs.

AIBU to ask people to clean up their act and stop swearing?

Funnily enough, the main moan on one of the other sites is the heavy policing of language and inability to swear.

I had elocution lessons at school. We all did a smashing posh swear

Mesmerised · 18/06/2017 18:47

I can't police you or anyone else. I just find it astonishing that you and others can't step out your box and acknowledge that many people will be offended by your choice if language. That's all. Just at least ACKNOWLEDGE the impact of the way you choose to express yourselves and RESPECT that the feelings of others who use this space are equally valid to your own.

Btw the vast majority on here do not use offensive language, as is the norm reflected in real life.

paxillin · 18/06/2017 18:52

Who can find the oldest "people shouldn't swear on MN" bunfight? We do have them three times a year after all.

I found one from 2011 Grin

JacquesHammer · 18/06/2017 18:52

I said way up thread that OP and others are of course entitled to your views.

What you're not entitled to do is modify others behaviour.

If you can't handle seeing the word "fuck" might suggest somewhere a little less robust may be more comfortable for you.

JassyRadlett · 18/06/2017 18:54

As for those so intent to point out "We swear and guess what, we're educated too!" gringringrin Do you think anyone cares? Why would the c word be less offensive because it's typed by someone with 5 degrees?

Oh dear, are you suffering from a spot of not-reading-the-thread? These issues have only been introduced by the quaint notion of some posters that swearing was linked to being uneducated. Bless.

Meanwhile, I'm bemused by the numbers who are so shaken by the occasional swear word that they feel the need to start a thread about it, or those whose experiences are so insular that the use of what is currently deemed to be a swear word immediately consigns a person into a mental 'that type' box in their head. How shallow those lives must be.

See how that works?

JacquesHammer · 18/06/2017 18:55

@paxillin only three?? Grin

But the point is Mesmerised, we can use it should we choose to. That's it. We can, should we choose to.
To be honest, I've done the majority of this thread without swearing, I've used the correct terms for the language used, and now I'm actually getting bored with a series of judgemental fuckers who are unable to grasp the basic concepts of a site whereby you can do as you choose within reason. I can swear, should I choose. As far as I'm concerned, if that has an impact on an individual that I do not know and am never likely to meet, I don't give a damn. If they're judging me on my use of language, that's their problem, my experience suggests that there are enough people on here who comprehend the term dysphemistic and are able to deploy when they consider such language necessary. I do respect this space and I do consider when and where I use the dysphemistic, perhaps others would do those of us that choose so, the courtesy of not judging us in a safe space in which we are allowed to use it. Otherwise, just fuck off, I'm bored now.

RebelRogue · 18/06/2017 19:09

@Mesmerised acknowledging something and changing your behaviour to pander to that something are two very different things.
But what do I know considering I'm an ignorant, uneducated chav that can't use apostrophes correctly?😬

Mesmerised · 18/06/2017 19:10

Jassy I couldn't care what type you are. I find certain words offensive. That's it. As do most people actually.

Dawn - you really do yourself no favours.

Dawndonnaagain · 18/06/2017 19:15

Oh, I really rather think that I have...

JassyRadlett · 18/06/2017 19:17

Jassy I couldn't care what type you are.

Gosh, then why bother judging people based on the language they use? What a waste of mental effort, if you don't care about it.

Mesmerised · 18/06/2017 19:19

Why does that not surprise me? Hmm

Anyway this is boring now.

RebelRogue · 18/06/2017 19:22

I'm getting a few girl crushes on this thread 😬

JassyRadlett · 18/06/2017 19:25

Ah, it was boring a good long while ago. I don't think there's been an original argument advanced in support of the OP's demands since around the second page.

Sorry for the double post - phone playing silly buggers.

surferjet · 18/06/2017 19:26

A bit of swearing in a thread is ok, but swearing in thread titles or sweary usernames is a bit 'try too hard' -
Swearing generally is seen as aggressive, common, or masculine. ( imo )

JassyRadlett · 18/06/2017 19:27

I adore the lot of you.
