This is the best outcome by miles. No hard brexit. (The city now predicts soft Brexit or even no Brexit!!!) No more crazy ideas by either side. Compromise. Tories given a good slap in the face for this stupid election.

This is the first election day in a long time with a good result!

Unfortunately Riversleep it's a different story with the DUP though, if they join with them. They don't sound like a moderating influence as they don't agree with abortion or same sex marriages. I'm not sure what their views on social care, education and health are but fear they're more Tory than the Tories. We could end up with an even more right wing, right wing government. Oh the irony of people trying to vote out a Tory overall majority.

Calyrical · 09/06/2017 07:28

Yes ... I'm not sure why people are celebrating, really.

I can understand a sense of elation over the Tories not having 'won' but they have. It's like the Tories with a side dish of sexism, really.

allegretto · 09/06/2017 07:29

Ironic that UKIP got Brexit their main policy party - yet now they don't have any MP's.

Inevitable really! They have no raison d'etre!

Toptrumps20 · 09/06/2017 07:30

Me too everthibk my DD was dancing around the kitchen just now. She is only 16 , but has some friends who have turned 18 this year. They all voted labour.
There was real anger amongst them about Brexit in particular. I'm so proud of our young people.

MiddleEnglandLives · 09/06/2017 07:30

I'm delighted that after all the media power they command, the non-stop smear campaign against Corbyn and the ideas of real socialist policies, the amount of big money at their beck and call, the 'strong and stable' bullshit this is the best they could do!!

It feels like a victory. Of course if Labour had just admitted that there would need to be more tax rises lower down the scale there might have been an outright victory.

I can't believe the Tories would seriously consider forming a partnership with a steadily reducing Northern Ireland party to shore themselves up. "Strong and stable"?? It'll be finished before Christmas.

The sensible thing would be as a pp said, form a national government with representatives from all sides.

histinyhandsarefrozen · 09/06/2017 07:31

Politics grad here too!

I knew I'd put the degree to use one day Grin
I'm pleased the country has resisted mays 'vision'.

MoominFlaps · 09/06/2017 07:31

I'm struggling to understand why anyone, no matter which party you support, thinks a hung parliament is a good thing?

It isn't but it's better than a Tory majority.

Toptrumps20 · 09/06/2017 07:32

The DUP are vile, not unlike UKIP in many ways.

Butterbean212 · 09/06/2017 07:33

Yes I'm also confused as aren't the DUP very conservative?

Also does anyone think we will see labour with full majority in power in the near future?

Lweji · 09/06/2017 07:34

Sorry, but lost copies:

For those hoping May will resign: what if Boris rises?

For those asking why wasn't Corbyn this good last year, Cameron was head of a big part of the campaign. No clear Remain leader. No clear strategy. That was the Remain mistake.

Panda81 · 09/06/2017 07:35

*Yes. They are the only ones in a position to form a government with the help of DUP. The figures for the others don't add up.

@PigletWasPoohsFriend* exactly, which is why I don't understand why labour are so ecstatic, unless it was purely a TM witch hunt regardless of the overall result. Short term victory to topple May but Tory still hold around 50 more seats than labour and will still likely be a Tory leader with a DUP coalition. That doesn't sound like much to celebrate for labour supporters.

MiddleEnglandLives · 09/06/2017 07:35

Very religiously conservative too. No way are we having northern Ireland anti abortion laws and that general attitude in power on the British mainland. No fucking way. It's crazy even to consider it, and just shows how much respect these tories really have for us.

histinyhandsarefrozen · 09/06/2017 07:36

I'm not a labour supporter!

Lovelycardigan · 09/06/2017 07:36

@ the80'sweregreat

So right about Tory gambling. There is definitely a pattern forming here...

They may well be remembered in years to come for shambolic decision making.

Toffeelatteplease · 09/06/2017 07:37

It stupid.

In a referendum more people voted for brexit than didn't.

A party that comes in and complete ignores a majority result is a very scary party indeed.

It's just means nobody can negotiate anything with any strength. We won't even have anyone do negotiations yet.

fakenamefornow · 09/06/2017 07:37

My prediction, Tory DUP coalition.
Teresa May PM
Brexit talks break down under 'difficult women' TM
GE before 2019

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 09/06/2017 07:39

*@PigletWasPoohsFriend exactly, which is why I don't understand why labour are so ecstatic

They have just pointed that out on the news. Yes they have done very well but they haven't done enough to form a government either.

makeourfuture · 09/06/2017 07:41

DD was dancing around the kitchen just now

Hell I am too! But I think I pulled a knee tendon or something.

histinyhandsarefrozen · 09/06/2017 07:41

35% of electorate voted brexit.

May decides to pursue hard brexit.

May wants more power but runs an abysmal campaign.

May is punished.

What's not to like? Smile

April229 · 09/06/2017 07:42

May not be so good if tories and dup work together as they will have majority and a right wing one at that :(

roundaboutthetown · 09/06/2017 07:42

The Tories would have to be utterly desperate to consider a coalition with the DUP - do they want to make themselves utterly unelectable for generations? The electorate would not forgive them.

Calyrical · 09/06/2017 07:42

Chaos, histiny?

I'm also now resigned to never seeing the back of Corbyn.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 09/06/2017 07:42

Brilliant. Tories will destroy themselves. Clear mandate for soft Brexit.

PinkPeppers · 09/06/2017 07:43

Most countries work evry well with hung Parliament. Actually countries like Germany and to a certain extend france have always hung parliament.
Boith countries are working pretty well with that.

It looks scary and unworkable be cause the uk is too use to NOT making any concessions and to work with 'my way or the hard way appraoch.

I would love for a coalition or a minority government so that we actually have decisions made from a respect and concessions pov rather than what we have seen in the last year. Esp for Brexit.

New times. INteresting times

Butterbean212 · 09/06/2017 07:43

Has any other parties except the DUP showed willing to form a coalition?
