To be irrationally upset by DH's vote.

Just found out that DH has voted Tory for the 2nd time now. He's doing it tactically as hates SNP but I'd already pointed out to him this morning that labour came 2nd here last time. I know it's stupid but I feel really upset about this. I always thought we had a similar world view and I hate the thought that he's done the whole cliche of turning from a left wing student into a right wing middle class professional. He's really angry with me now for the way I reacted but I wouldn't be the person be married if I just said. " that's nice dear". Just now I'm feeling pretty disgusted with him though. AIBU?

OP posts:
kingfishergreen · 08/06/2017 17:38

#whispers# I'd feel the same.

...and I know that's unreasonable, but my political views are so entwined with my moral and ethical views that I'd question DH's opinion on many things other than which box he crossed.

DancingLedge · 08/06/2017 17:38

People, OP does include the word ' irrational' in her title.

Of course we're all prepared to defend to the death the freedom to vote for who ever you see fit.

OTOH, waking up in bed with a Tory voter?

seoulsurvivor · 08/06/2017 17:38

These things don't come from nowhere, they tell you what a person's values are.

This Tory government goes well beyond simply having a different idea for how to achieve a fair society for all - I believe they are purposely and systematically destroying our country, and I cannot fathom how anyone can vote for them.

Yes it's his choice, but I would find it hard to respect someone who thinks they would be a good government.

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 08/06/2017 17:39

Yanbu

I can understand you feeling this way but i really think you should try not to be annoyed with him, he is entitled to his vote (as i am sure you know Smile)

EllenJanethickerknickers · 08/06/2017 17:40

To be honest, yes he can vote however his conscience dictates, but I couldn't actually love someone whose views were so different to my own. I wouldn't want to be married to them.

beardymcbeardy · 08/06/2017 17:41

YANBU. Can someone please show me where the op has stated that she tried to stop her dp voting? The dp is entitled to vote and the op is entitled to feel disgusted at his choice. I doubt you'd have so much YABU if you said your dp had voted BNP. Personally, if my dp voted Tory, I would be considering our future together, primarily because we have disabled dc and it would go against everything I believe in.

HoldBackTheRain · 08/06/2017 17:41

YANBU. I couldn't live with someone with such fundamentally different views to me. It's too important to me!

Alicia555 · 08/06/2017 17:42

Why didn't you just vote for him Hmm
Of course yabu and you know you are

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 08/06/2017 17:42

YABVU

His vote to do with as he wishes.

He could have not told you and then you'd be none the wiser.

IWillCrushYouLikeABug · 08/06/2017 17:43

When did living in a democracy mean that people can't be annoyed that people vote for right wing nonsense? Hmm if the op's husband had said I hate children, the NHS, the disabled and poor people she'd be within her rights to say she wants to ltb. Well with a simple X he just said that.

NotAnotherNoughtiesTune · 08/06/2017 17:43

YABU.

If he was voting BNP and spouting racist stuff I I'd agree with you. But he's not showing any disdain for anyone.

But as it is I think he means no harm.

NotAnotherNoughtiesTune · 08/06/2017 17:43

But this is why I advise not talking politics if you disagree with those kinds of things.

metspengler · 08/06/2017 17:44

Definitely, and understandable to be upset, just that it's something we have to bury and move on, isn't it.

"This Tory government goes well beyond simply having a different idea for how to achieve a fair society for all - I believe they are purposely and systematically destroying our country, and I cannot fathom how anyone can vote for them. "

Probably because they don't believe as you do that the Tories are purposely and systematically destroying the country, or if they do, that there is an even worse option HTH

missmoz · 08/06/2017 17:44

How is it irrational to be upset? Votes reflect views.

It's the same as if he came out and said he was against gay marriage. The OP might be upset because she wouldn't tally this view with someone she loves and respects. If she forbid him from saying his opinion then that would be a violation of free speech. If she forbid him from voting that would be a violation of democracy. But being upset isn't.

She married the man, it is her business what his politics are.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 08/06/2017 17:45

I would find it hard to respect someone who voted Labour with JC at the helm.

unicornpoopoop · 08/06/2017 17:46

My husbands now not talking to me as I didn't want to vote as I don't like any of them. He's not annoyed that I didn't want to vote but annoyed that I wouldn't vote for who he wanted me to. He doesn't understand that I'm entitled to my own opinion but apparently I should just have done as he asked as he felt strongly about it. I think he's massively unreasonable and yes yabu too

Alconleigh · 08/06/2017 17:46

I get you OP. Of course people can vote for who they like, but actions have consequences. I am struggling to keep any respect for my father, a disabled, heavy user of the NHS who votes Tory. The first hint of a moan about anything related to his circumstances is unlikely to result in anything more sympathetic than "suck it up, you chose this".

Dentistlakes · 08/06/2017 17:46

YABU. How he votes is none of your business.

pipsqueak25 · 08/06/2017 17:46

one vote labour cancels out one tory vote wtf ?? how the hell does that one work then ? that could work both ways - god there is some stupid stuff being written on mn threads recently.

passthecremeeggs · 08/06/2017 17:46

OP does he actually hold Conservative views? Did you not say it was a tactical vote to keep the SNP out? In which case his view is "keep the SNP out" not "I hate the NHS/children" and other melodramatic statements

angryladyboobs · 08/06/2017 17:46

I voted Labour and DP is voting Tory.

I wish he voted Labour but at the end of the day it's his choice.

Yabu to react that way towards him

Wow. Of course he did Biscuit

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 08/06/2017 17:48

It's almost funny how hyperbolic people get - then you realise that they are allowed to vote Shock

ohhereweareagain · 08/06/2017 17:49

Oh ffs. Your attitude is all part of why so many people DON'T vote Labour anymore. Dh and i vote different sides. So fucking what

Primaryteach87 · 08/06/2017 17:49

YANBU - it would be a major, major issue for me. Sharing similar understandings about other people, the welfare state, immigration, public services etc is very important for me, especially as we have children.
