To not understand how any parent could not vote for Labour, our kids need the NHS don't they?

I just don't get it, our children need the NHS, me and my children would probably all not be alive if it wasn't for the NHS, and if we had to pay for private I probably wouldn't even have children....and even if you have private healthcare we all need our police force. I just don't get it. How do people justify this to themselves?

Tory ideological cuts....this failed austerity...have strangled growth.

Growth, even a modest amount, would provide much-needed finance to the NHS.

Just a little growth.

bruffian · 07/06/2017 10:26

"please, do read what various experts are saying."

sadly there are are many experts who are saying that throwing money at the NHS is not the answer

Naylor is an expert in his field. He's the ex boss of UCLH

notanewuser · 07/06/2017 10:36

Can someone please explain how a budget increase of 11Bn to the annual budget and an increase in staff of 300k over 7 years is a cut?

All parties are committed to ensuring the NHS remains free at the point of use. Why does this have to mean that the state owns every vertically integrated element?

Lalalandfill · 07/06/2017 10:37

The people who believe Labour will "save" the NHS are are gullible as the people who believe Donald Trump will save the US economy. Labour have cleverly made themselves the NHS party without any credible plan to "save" it - as many others have said the NHS needs fundamental restructuring and throwing money at it would be a short-termist solution that would end up with far greater problems down the line.

Paffle · 07/06/2017 10:42

If Labour get in it will be all of our kids who end up paying for it in the end. It's just shunting the cost on to the next generation. Not what I want for my kids.

GretchenFranklin · 07/06/2017 11:01

THE NHS IS ABOUT AS SAFE WITH THEM AS A PET HAMSTER WITH A HUNGRY PYTHON – FORMER TORY PRIME MINISTER, JOHN MAJOR.

notanewuser · 07/06/2017 11:09

Paffle - damn right. This is making your kids pay for what you want. Kicking the can into the long grass is pure John Mcdonnel. Make someone else pay for it.

The entire labour manifesto is about giving every group everything they want and putting it on someone elses tab. The "rich" (whoever they are - generally someone with more than me) and your kids.

Tax a dustman so that tarquin can do a degree in colouring for free - yup - why not. Pillage small businesses so that rich pensioners get free fuel - even when they can afford it - sure, go on.

notanewuser · 07/06/2017 11:11

Gretchen - hardly a credible source that. And beautifully taken out of context. Who rolled out PFI? Labour. Who put entire hospitals out to tender? Labour.

Who caused the chaos of the GP contracts? Labour.

Dawndonnaagain · 07/06/2017 11:14

thing is though, notanew they weren't improved when the Tories got in and as 'New Labour' were in fact a bunch of Tories, we may well get something different this time.

Dawndonnaagain · 07/06/2017 11:16

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/jun/05/john-major-nhs-risk-brexit-pythons-johnson-and-gove A more credible source]] notanew*, and not taken out of context. He was discussing the NHS with Andrew Marr when he said it.

Dawndonnaagain · 07/06/2017 11:17

apologies, working link

Mia1415 · 07/06/2017 11:18

Because I believe that the NHS is probably better off under May than Corbyn.

I strongly disagree with the conservative education policy however I'm still voting for them.

I don't think Labour are fit to run the country (as things stand currently).

GretchenFranklin · 07/06/2017 11:19

notanewuser not a credible source? What do you mean?

It's video of Major laying into Boris, Gove and IDS and their individual plans to wreck the NHS. What do you think it is CGI lol.

notanewuser · 07/06/2017 11:21

so when Labour screw it up its because they aren't "proper labour" or somehow crypto-conservatives? Uh huh. Right. Then if thats the case - why did you vote for them?

Dawndonnaagain · 07/06/2017 11:34

notanew, I didn't. I voted Green. I'm voting Labour this time.

makeourfuture · 07/06/2017 11:37

Boris, Gove and IDS

Imagine waking up from surgery and seeing those three around your gurney....

20nil · 07/06/2017 12:04

As I said, read a range of expert opinion.

sleepyowl12 · 07/06/2017 12:30

I am surprised at people saying as Conservatives have not said they are going to privatise the NHS this is proof they have no intention. Those who are making the claim Conservatives wish to privatise the NHS do not believe they are going to do it overnight. However, laws such as the Health and Social Care Act in 2012 which involved huge reorganisation costing billions were another step towards the private market gaining more access to NHS with more providers of services now being private companies. I haven't got the exact figures to hand but i think since the Act now 7% of services are private companies up from 2%. This is set to continue. Private services interestingly have to still use the NHS logo.

Accusations that the NHS overspends or under performs, or is unaffordable, were used to justify introducing the Health and Social Care Act. However evidence suggests that, although there is a need for improvement in some areas, compared with other healthcare systems in the world the NHS does very well in terms of safety, effectiveness, and health outcomes and manages to outperform other, more expensive systems, such as that of the USA. See www.nhscampaign.org/NHS-reforms/the-truth-about-our-nhs/the-unreported-nhs-1.html.

Other European countries have a mix of private and non profit social insurance though the privately run for profit part is a small percentage. Conservatives though are not enacting laws to switch to some of the European models of healthcare. They are setting up the system to allow more and more privatisation along the American model. I personally have no wish for this kind of system which works out more expensive and can leave some people with catastrophic healthcare costs.

Although the figures show an increase in funding under Conservatives it is not enough to match the increase in running the NHS with increasingly more expensive equipment, treatments and a growing ageing population. Also important to note as a percentage of GDP the UK spend a lot less than other European countries. The NHS under the coalition and Conservatives has in real terms become underfunded.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 07/06/2017 12:39

That would be funny, Make, seeing as they are't nurses, anaesthetists or surgeons . Or indeed my next of kin, so yes, that would be strange and unpleasant.

Do they say "gurney" here?

Dingalingalingaling · 07/06/2017 17:17

When people hear 'privatise the NHS' what they think is going to happen is we all end up paying for treatment like in the US. This is not the case. All it means is private companies providing NHS services. A lot of the NHS is provided by private companies already.

callmeadoctor · 07/06/2017 19:51

No party is able to miraculously solve the NHS. So I am voting Conservative! (but Mumsnet is bizarre leaving a political thread on here!)

Twinkie1 · 08/06/2017 08:33

The NHS doesn't need more money throwing at it, it needs proper private politically neutral companies to run it, private companies run by finance bods who have an idea of balancing books and profit and loss. Not a jumped up band 6 who started as a HCP who has got about as much idea of delivering a comprehensive structured service as they have not whinging about a pay cap when they get incremental pay rises regardless of ability.

Privatisation of the NHS means a private company providing the service, a company that has got the best deal for your tax dollar, not having to pay at point of use or having to have private insurance.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 08/06/2017 08:35
