To think the new version of Dirty Dancing looks absolutely crap! (Spoilers I guess even though I haven't seen it either)

Just saw this advertised as a UK premier for Channel 5 so went on YouTube to see some videos. Now, remakes are generally crap but AIBU to think that they should actually make an attempt to surpass the original? Here is the dance to the finale in the original version:

Even if you're not a fan of the original at least it is talented dancing and an exciting scene to watch!

now to me the following is just lacklustre and pointless and uneventful compared to the original. It's just amateurish and crap, simple dancing! It's not even like I'm a huge fan but when I saw it I was utterly bored (although 'Baby's' 'run' at 3:25 really makes me laugh Grin):

I must admit though it's probably going to be one of those things I'll tune in for just to see how much of a car crash it is and to make fun of it. I also did the same for William and Kate: The Movie which was one of the most unintentionally funniest things I have ever seen!

Okay, going against the grain here but I've seen half of it and sort of liked it. It was like a realistic version of the original fairy tale- dancing in the staff hut was full on sex rather than the suggestive but still PG original, Baby is plump and a bit clumsy rather than a slender girl who is acting clumsy and I liked that her sister wasn't a full-on talentless bitch put in to make Baby seem even nicer. And it looks like the ending is equally realistic as far as the dancing goes. I'm not sure about the musical aspect with characters singing the songs rather than just dancing to them... going to go and watch the rest now!

I guess it made me feel like I was seeing inside some girl's daydreams really.

The should've used either Hailee Seinfeld, Sarah Hyland, or someone like Kalani from Dance Moms (she's older now) or even a slightly unknown Broadway ingenue, Abigail Breslin is an absolutely awful awful choice.

PenguindreamsofDraco · 06/06/2017 12:48

Oh God, I just cringed so hard at that. That is awful. Awful.

I know I'm bumping my own thread but I keep replaying Baby's 'run' over and over again and I've got tears in my eyes!! At one point it looks like she's going to fall over and fall flat on her face. Pleeeease someone find a gif of it for me

The new one is on plex. Just watched he original 😍

DeadGood · 06/06/2017 18:57

The girl is extremely cute, but I think young women do the pigeon-toed thing a lot these days, which doesn't look graceful.
And yes why are they singing??

pigsDOfly · 06/06/2017 19:36

Oh Christ that's dire.

Thank you for the original clip OP. I'll admit I'm probably a lot older than most people on here but I loved the original and that song brings back so many happy memories for me that have nothing to do with the film.

It doesn't matter that Baby wasn't able to dance in the beginning and then turned into an amazing beautiful dancer in the original. It's a young girl's fantasy, and fantasies are extreme. She was beautiful, he was beautiful and they were wrapped up in each other dancing this amazing sexy dance.

Who has a fantasy where you galumph around a stage with two left feet and no talent with some really unattractive, equally untalented bloke, who looks like he needs a shower.

And what's with the bloody parents singing?

Horrible.

Castieldeansam · 06/06/2017 19:37

Not going to be able to watch it without thinking of paddy and Keith!!! That show had me in stitches.

TheySayIamparanoid · 06/06/2017 19:41

Just watched some of the Grease remake and it wasn't too bad! Don't know if I could sit through it all, but it was like 'inspired by' rather than remake I think!

Thekissbyklimt13 · 06/06/2017 20:01

No way, this is horrendous!!! I thought the stage show was bad enough, though I could hardly hear it due to the women shrieking in the audience.

Rustypaperclip · 06/06/2017 20:04

Is the new one available through any of the streaming services? I haven't been able to find it so far

2littlemoos · 06/06/2017 20:06

Confused why bother?!

BillSykesDog · 06/06/2017 20:15

It got slaughtered when they showed it in the states.

EggysMom · 06/06/2017 20:16

Is this a remake of the film, or one of those "live" specials? I enjoyed both Grease Live & Hairspray Live, yes they weren't as good as the originals but they were a fun experience nevertheless.

I have to say, watching the Youtube clip above, neither the new Johnny or Baby have any "bounce" to them, they both seem to lumber around their dance moves like slovenly teenagers.

TheFrenchLieutenantsMonkey · 06/06/2017 20:24

Just...no.

Ollivander84 · 06/06/2017 20:33

It's on Sunday, channel 5, 18.25

Amanduh · 06/06/2017 20:38

It's not really a remake, it's a tv special and pretty low budget. It's not great although some of the smaller character parts in it are! Then again I've never liked the original, so I couldn't really be bothered to care. Refused to watch the Grease one though. Nothing will come close so theres no point Grin

MissionItsPossible · 06/06/2017 22:01

I propose a mass watch with our phones/laptops close to hand to take the piss watch it together. Plenty of Wine to make it more enjoyable Grin

I've set it to record Grin I'm house bound after spinal surgery, my version of "shit" TV is hitting new lows

frankie001 · 06/06/2017 22:32

My eyes!!

VillageFete · 06/06/2017 22:38

I am crying laughing GrinGrinGrin Ansolutely hysterical?! I can barely believe it's real?!

They've made a dreadful mistake! Never mess with a classic...

Why would Debra Messing or Nicole Scherzinger want to be a part of this?!

That dress does nothing for Baby.

secretfreckle · 06/06/2017 22:45

HAHAHAHA!
There are no words. Actually, there are. This is a travesty.
Just no.

ringringringringringring · 06/06/2017 22:54

Haha, when the parents started singing at the end!!!

But I'm curious, after the dance the scene shifts to Breslin in modern day clothing sitting at the movies. So is the story that she was a kid at a Dirty Dancing screening, who just fantasised about herself in the main role throughout? Basically it was all a shit dream?

SenecaFalls · 06/06/2017 22:59

The shift is to the 1970s, not modern day.
