to wonder why these women wear gym clothes all the time

There are quite a few mums at my dc's primary who constantly wear lycra gym clothes. They drop off in them, pick up in them and generally seem to hang out in them all the time. From what I can see they don't actually do any exercise during the day so it puzzles me. Is it a comfort thing? I know it is none of my business and I don't know why I even care but I often wonder.

BitOutOfPractice THIS.

MyProperTea · 25/05/2017 19:15

I have 2 under 2- for me it is because they wash well, don't tend to stain and don't show my bum when I bend down. Basically the 3 criteria I have doesn't include to look good.

Fleshy · 25/05/2017 19:23

My mind is boggled at the idea of women paying attention to what other women are wearing, thinking about it, and then remembering the outfit six hours later at their kids school. What the fuck?!

usershitloadofnumbers · 25/05/2017 19:39

followed by derogatory comments about women wearing skirts / heels / dresses.

no... followed by reasons why some of us do not wear skirts and heels, not a shit given about other women, no time for that frankly!

emilybrontescorset · 25/05/2017 19:42

I'm often seen in my active wear.
I do a lot of gym classes and will often call into a shop n my way home.
People might think I've put it on to go to the shop in but I haven't.

stuckin90s · 25/05/2017 20:06

I live in the furthest corners of wales; nobody gives a damn what you wear once you are past the difficult teen years. I like visiting places like London, but do worry about what to wear there, and miss my flip flops and trainers. When you get to forties trainers are really comfortable; other shoes can hurt your hips, if you have a lot of housework , dog walking etc. to do, and you are on your feet a lot.I prefer daps and slip ons, but the soles are just not thick enough for a busy day. And slip on shoes are painful to walk far in at this age.
You can look a right mess here and people just think you are camping!,gardening or just back from walking the cliff path.

mygorgeousmilo · 25/05/2017 20:37

We have one mum at school like this. With perfectly blow dried hair, high heels, make up, and gym wear. She looks like a twit. There are other mums wearing gym stuff, but they actually go!

user1487175389 · 25/05/2017 20:41

I think our dcs go to the same school, OP. It's been bugging me for years. We have a park nearby and I always expect to see them doing laps after drop off, but no, they just wander away slowly in the direction of home. Maybe I'm just jealous because I'd look like a sack of potatoes in what they wear.

Butteredparsnip1ps · 25/05/2017 21:05

You know the Mickey Flanagan Comedy set about whether you are going out, or whether you are going out, out?

Well, there's active-wear and active, active wear. Active wear is what you wear to do the school run, shopping, housework, commuting and lounging about. Active-active wear is what you wear to the gym or if you are going to do a run. Unless of course, you are doing the school run and then going to the gym, in which case you wear your active-active wear for the school run.

On the other hand, if you have been for a run and your active-active wear trainers are covered in mud, you might then put on your active wear trainers that you keep in the boot of your car before going to the supermarket so that you don't trail mud everywhere. As you look red, sweaty & muddy you get around in half the usual time because no one wants to talk to people in active wear who look a bit sweaty.

Funnyfarmer · 25/05/2017 21:33

I wear gym clothes if I'm going to the gym straight after.
I'm always either going straight to work or the gym. I always think. "I hope people don't think I'm one of them"
I don't know why people wear them if not exercising. Trackys and hoodies I can understand there comfortable. But lycra not so comfortable

Funnyfarmer · 25/05/2017 21:36

How do you know these people arn't going to the gym?
And people wonder why people find it neccersery to tag themselves there on fb

Orrieonko · 25/05/2017 21:38

I go to school in my Sweaty Betty's if I am going to the gym at some point that day and not going anywhere else (except school drop off) before hand, why not?! Shower and change afterwards though..

fondmemoriesofsleep · 25/05/2017 21:40

I have often wondered this!! I have at times before or after the gym popped to mini Sainsbury's to grab something but otherwise go straight home for shower or go straight to gym. I can understand on train or on way from work if going straight to gym. Or at school drop off if going straight from gym or pick up if coming straight from gym. BUT - I often see people in gym clothes in the high street? Just casually browsing the shops. It confuses me - is there any intention to go and exercise or not!

For those that have said it you are right it's none of my business and does me no harm whatsoever but let's be honest you could say that about a large proportion of things people think and talk about and yet we still can't help ourselves.

I hadn't considered the comfort reasoning so thank you to those that have clarified that as their reason - maybe it'll stop bugging me now!

candlelit35 · 25/05/2017 21:43

Yep. I'm one. Active - wear if I'm in a rush or if I'm going straight to the gym. Nobody's bloody business and most active-wear these days is nice, trendy even.

6 hours between drop off and pick up can fly by and sometimes it's easier to wait til evening before showering- and then into...loungewear 😁

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 25/05/2017 21:54

I'm not bothered about people wearing gym wear for the school run who go to the gym or not.

I've got to get to work so am usually in smart shoes, dress and jacket/smart cardigan. In the mumsnet mumsy uniform of a middle management office worker! (Often slagged off in the style and beauty section)

However what I find gross is when you can see a gym goer/runner in the supermarket on the way home from exercising and they are still sweaty!!

Chickydoo · 25/05/2017 22:01

I work in health/fitness. Gym gear is my uniform. Put it on when I awake up, take off when I go to bed (occasional changes in between) 6 days a week.
Those who criticise, how do you know where the gym kit wearers are going/have been. Even if some people don't actually end up at the gym, at least perhaps the intention is there.

Funnyfarmer · 25/05/2017 22:06

I'm obviously doing something wrong. I really don't look good in my gym clothes.
The supermarket is quite near my gym. So if i need something for tea it just makes sense to pop in after the gym.
If you've been to the gym and actually worked out your bound to be sweaty.
My gym doesn't have changing facilities so it's either driving home shower wash dry hair clean clothes and drive back to the direction you've just come from to go to the shops. Or just nip in on the way home. It's not like we expect anyone to touch or sniff us

MsJudgemental · 25/05/2017 22:16

I'm well past the school run but if I have a class at 10.30 or 11.30 I will pit my gym kit on even if I have errands to do before going. Proper, good quality -expensive- gym kit is comfy and makes you feel and look good. Think Sweaty Betty and Fabletics- you can find bargains on eBay.

MsJudgemental · 25/05/2017 22:17

Put

MsJudgemental · 25/05/2017 22:18

And expensive should have been a strikethrough!

Jakeyboy1 · 25/05/2017 22:25

It's like the new shell suit...

theclick · 25/05/2017 22:37

I am in my gym gear a lot but I actually do go. Then I get back home, shower, and put it back on (different bra). That's the comfort factor in it. I love it.

bluebellsparklypants · 25/05/2017 22:47

I always think if you've been to the gym why would you then carry on wearing sweaty clothes, I came to the conclusion whose who wear them must just like to give the illusion of fittness

user1471466073 · 25/05/2017 22:56

It really irritates me. It has become fashion. Wear 'activewear' if you are going to the gym. If you are not going, don't wear it! Also if you are doing to the gym after the morning drop off, why are you still wearing it at pick up? Take a shower!
