to wonder why these women wear gym clothes all the time

There are quite a few mums at my dc's primary who constantly wear lycra gym clothes. They drop off in them, pick up in them and generally seem to hang out in them all the time. From what I can see they don't actually do any exercise during the day so it puzzles me. Is it a comfort thing? I know it is none of my business and I don't know why I even care but I often wonder.

It's called 'athlesuire' now!

If you are a certain shape and size, it is very flattering
And if you aren't, it is mega comfy and easy to wash/dry

Plus, it gives you a great get-out for boring conversations - "can't stop and chat, I need to get to my yoga class"

Neolara · 24/05/2017 15:07

I sometimes go to drop off in my running kit. If I do, there is the slimmest of slim chances I may actually get off my arse and go for a run. (Often I just go to the cafe instead though......... Bloody friends, distracting me from my fitness mission.)

usershitloadofnumbers · 24/05/2017 15:10

because it's comfortable and easy?

There are days when I drop the kids, then go for a run.
Run to pick up the kids from school.
Take the kids on their bikes after school, so I run after them

Basically spent days running here and there, so a sport bras is the most appropriate one to wear. I stick with suits and heels when I am in the office. (still wear trainers to get there though)

camaleon · 24/05/2017 15:10

I am an academic to MineralWater and have no opinion on what my female students wear.
I often wear sport gear if I am not coming to the Uni because it is comfortable by design. It is made to be comfortable and outdoors.

camaleon · 24/05/2017 15:11

too not to obviously

innurendo · 24/05/2017 15:12

Comfy, no messing about and looks rather attractive to boot.

arethereanyleftatall · 24/05/2017 15:12

I do it all the time. Because;
1.comfort - as if in my pjs but I'm not

  1. I will at somebody point in the school day, exercise
  2. In the morning it means I don't have to think about what to wear
  3. I get to wear trainers which are the comfiest shoes
  4. I don't have to do hair (head band) or makeup
  5. Trainers encourage me to walk fast, equals good
  6. If I already have gym stuff on, it motivates me to do exercise
ShoesHaveSouls · 24/05/2017 15:14

I'd have never been seen dead in any sort of activewear 'athleisure' clothing on the school run - until I took up yoga and realised just how bloody comfortable it is Grin

And yes, if I can be arsed to get ready in the morning, I pull hair into a pony tail, don sunglasses and activewear - and pretend I'm going for a run Grin It's great.

I have actually been for a run today - so I am legitimately wearing it. Will need to shower and change though. At some point.

Originalfoogirl · 24/05/2017 15:19

Because they want to. And its none else's damned business what they choose to wear.

Badliar · 24/05/2017 15:19

The best chance I have of going to the gym or a class is to lay out my kit and trainers the night before and put it on as soon as I get up. If i had to change again I wouldn't go as I only need the slightest excuse to get out of it.

gustofwind · 24/05/2017 15:20

It drives me mental. It shouldn't, but it does.

Like those Instagram 'lifestyle' bloggers. Just a walking, real version.

Some people will look at you with a sense of awe. Like "wow, there is a person with the right healthy attitude, I wish I had enough time to go to the gym (usually yoga) or a fitness class".

I know different... Yes - I judge you! (you are not supposed to let this bother you either, each to their own!) Grin

yaela123 · 24/05/2017 15:22

Kokusai Grin

Clandestino · 24/05/2017 15:22

I wear them because I find them comfortable and like the feel and the look.
It's my weekend wear. Can't see any problem with that. Just because someone slapped "gym wear" on them doesn't mean they can't be worn otherwise.

GeezAJammyPeece · 24/05/2017 15:26

I do not, nor ever have, own a gym membership.
I do not 'excercise'.

I wear 'gym clothes' everyday because I need to wear a uniform at work and leggings & a t-shirt are easiest for changing in and out of quickly in the staff room.

Foureyesarebetterthantwo · 24/05/2017 15:29

MineralWater I wonder if you are at the same place as me, my students are also massively into sportswear with long hair as well (I guess they tie it back if actually exercising). It's a trend, it's says 'I'm young and fit enough to wear this'. I do think as trends go, it's probably pretty sensible, as is wearing flat shoes/trainers. We were never this sensible when we were younger.

EagleRay · 24/05/2017 15:30

An Australian friend who lived here for a while told me that wearing activewear was a big thing back home. I showed her the video and she was Shock because it was filmed where she used to live back in Oz!

BlueInveritas · 24/05/2017 15:30

OMG that video is hysterical. All the mums at my DCs school wear it and a few of the dads.

KP86 · 24/05/2017 15:31

It's comfortable and I do end up being a bit more active when I wear it! Having proper shoes and stretchy pants on instead of a skirt and sandals makes me bouncier.

Might look a bit shit but oh well.

YoloSwaggins · 24/05/2017 15:33

I'm an academic. Nearly all my female students now seem to be permanently in sports wear. I think it looks stupid.

My mum says exactly this!

And its none else's damned business what they choose to wear.

Well, what you do in public kind of is other people's business.

Sometimes I wear gym clothes when I intend on going to the gym in a couple of hours, but never just all day. I think it's a bit of a lazy look, but then again some people prefer comfort to fashion. (Having said that, I think it's currently "fashionable" - shows that you go to yoga classes and eat chia seeds)

LadyRoseate · 24/05/2017 15:43

It is very comfy. I only wear it if I'm going to the gym but will happily go to the school drop-off/supermarket as part of the same trip.

I think nice, hi-tech "activewear" is kind of like what I imagined we'd all be wearing in the future, when I used to watch star trek etc as a child. Breathable, stretchy, body-fitting, ultra-practical space-age-looking clothing. Like Seven Of Nine, basically she's the queen of everyday activewear.

NoBarbaraGood · 24/05/2017 15:47

Oh my word, Kokusai! Thanks for posting that video! I for one had never seen it before.

I'm going to change what I am wearing now.

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 24/05/2017 15:47

I'll tend to wear "active wear" most days including some school runs. Often I'll have it on in the morning before a run or buggy fit session. One buggy fit session finishes with just enough time to get back to the school for pick-up so I'll be in it then. Normally I'll be showered and changed after a run, but sometimes I may have cut it fine and go straight to school and sort myself afterwards.

DawnOfTheMombie · 24/05/2017 15:49

I wear gym clothes on the morning school run because I go straight to the local park to do a buggy run every day. I have to walk 20 minutes to get to the park and often swing by Sainsbury's/Aldi on the way back. I always feel a bit of a twat but on the other hand I don't give a shit.

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 24/05/2017 15:49

Anyway tikiboo leggings are so awesome that they need maximum public exposure.

Everyone luffs unicorns and rainbows Grin Grin Grin

whippetwoman · 24/05/2017 15:50

Love that video!
