to think it's finally time England deals with its Katy Hopkins problem?

I know she feeds off publicity and the best thing really would be to ignore her until she shrivels and dies of fame starvation so I apologise for the thread but this is really too much now isn't it?

"BertrandRussell I think that's important and I think it's being done already. Time isn't on our side, though."

So why are you shutting down people who are trying to understand by suggesting the don't care about the death of an 8 year old girl?

Lweji · 25/05/2017 10:54

It's a good thing that I don't read or am even aware of most of what KH says or writes. Her stupidity and goadery is astounding.

Orlantina · 25/05/2017 10:54

Tell that to the families of the dead, and dont downplay the seriouness of the threat

We have had hardly any actual attacks in the UK. We've had many plots foiled because of the work with the intelligence community and the Muslim community.

I fear that the backlash against this will make the threat more likely and the cooperation that much harder.

Sionella · 25/05/2017 10:54

Make - how do you propose to make it harder for people to buy screws, bolts and light bulbs? In any event, they think this chap might have brought it back from Libya with him.

user1471545174 · 25/05/2017 10:54

And again the thread runs to the simplistic side rather than engage in anything complex.

lessworriedaboutthecat · 25/05/2017 10:55

Plinky we don't live in America though do we.

NotISaidTheWalrus · 25/05/2017 10:56

White British men kill a lot more people (and more children) than any muslim terrorists. Why don't we have domestic abusers on a list and throw them in jail?
And anyone connected to them.

Cos the country would be one giant camp.

user1471545174 · 25/05/2017 10:56

BertrandRussell countering an opinion isn't "shutting down".

firstcutisthedeepest · 25/05/2017 10:56

noti
The police have a list of 3 thousand men living in this country who have known links to terrorist groups. They have proof of that. They are under surveilance, the one involved at Manchester was also known to them. What the fuck are YOU talking about. Do you know better?

nauticant · 25/05/2017 10:56

I just did. THE ONES ON THE LIST.

I'd prefer to live in a society where punishment comes from the law and not from who controls a secret list, whether that be politicians, the police, or sinister figures in the shadows.

Orlantina · 25/05/2017 10:57

Most terrorists are home grown. I have no doubt that ISIS are using the reaction by some to this attack to recruit and radicalise more alienated young men.

Fliptophead · 25/05/2017 10:58

What about Americans. They kill more people with gun violence than any Muslim terrorist could possibly kill. It might hurt your tourist industry but fuck it. Send all Americans back! There are 200,000 of them here! Shock

OK then less, here's another one.

Orlantina · 25/05/2017 10:58

Known links? Or suspected?
Or someone who clicked on a website?
Was a friend of someone?
Lived in the same house?

Lweji · 25/05/2017 10:59

So how do you get on the 'list'?

I imagine by people reporting them (which in itself is a minefield, particularly if we were to start locking people up for this), by being seen talking to know radicals (again, unless you listen to the conversations they could be innocent, or the person could simply be a target for conversion, but not an actual convert), and by "tapping" their communications (email, message boards, phone, etc).

We really can't start locking people up for thinking of doing something or for hanging around the wrong crowd. That is definitely a country I wouldn't want to live in.

The problem is KH is doing exactly what the terrorists want, she is playing right into their hands. Their aim is to create hatred and division, to get governments to start jailing random Muslims with no proof of anything. That will give them the mandate they need to create further chaos, it will get more people on their side, which will in turn cause more destruction.

KH is intelligent so I assume she knows this, but just doesn't care?

NotISaidTheWalrus · 25/05/2017 11:02

Ok, we'll take this slowly. IF there was proof that they had done anything illegal, then they would be arrested. If there is no proof, they will be monitored and intelligence gathered until there is some proof, then they will be arrested.
Having a known link to a terrorist group may be that your friend once shared a house with someone who went to Syria. Does that warrant someone being locked up?

What do you think would happen if all those people were arrested and imprisoned without charge? MORE people, not on any list, would become active and radicalised by the incredible unfairness of that racist treatment.

Congratulations, your plan to intern people on your list just caused a new crop of terrorist bombings! Well done.

firstcutisthedeepest · 25/05/2017 11:02

Fuck off NotI white men? blatantly racist remark, but also pathetic.

lessworriedaboutthecat · 25/05/2017 11:02

Plinky When was the last time there was a murderous terrorist attack against Muslims in the UK by white British men (not some rather peculiar Ukrainian's.

Lweji · 25/05/2017 11:03

KH is intelligent so I assume she knows this, but just doesn't care?

Just as long as she can pay for her house and her children's private education, I'm sure she's happy.

NotISaidTheWalrus · 25/05/2017 11:03

Fuck off NotI white men? blatantly racist remark, but also pathetic

Statistically true. Proven. Do you have a problem with facts?

BertrandRussell · 25/05/2017 11:03

"BertrandRussell countering an opinion isn't "shutting down"."

It is when you counter the opinion by suggesting that the person holding the opinion is morally repugnant. I.e.- "we have to look at the wider context of an attack like this, and one of the things we have to look at is the history of Western involvement in the Middle East"
"What has an 8 year old child to do with that?"

Orlantina · 25/05/2017 11:04

firstcut

Where do we stop with locking people up because they MIGHT do something?

We start with potential terrorists on a list.
Maybe a male friend who seems a bit odd around women?
What about that young black male?

Where do you stop?

nauticant · 25/05/2017 11:05

I imagine by people reporting them (which in itself is a minefield, particularly if we were to start locking people up for this)

There was a fair bit of that during the War on Terror. A neighbour, acquaintance etc in say Iraq would have a grudge against someone and they'd tell the Allies that the person was a terrorist and then they'd be killed or would disappear into detention without trial.
