to think it's finally time England deals with its Katy Hopkins problem?

I know she feeds off publicity and the best thing really would be to ignore her until she shrivels and dies of fame starvation so I apologise for the thread but this is really too much now isn't it?

It's not laughing matter. We are living in serious times and how we react defines us.

Some people think that internment without charge of people on the radar is the answer.

History shows that internment doesn't work. It just makes things work.

I think that the best way to identify people is to use the community.
I also think that trying not to alienate communities is a good way to get the community onside.

Orlantina · 25/05/2017 09:51

It just makes things work

EDIT - it just makes things WORSE

NotISaidTheWalrus · 25/05/2017 09:51

When you advocate facist treatment of suspected terrorists, and anyone linked to it: YOU are part of the problem. YOU will cause MORE terrorism.
KH and her followers are adding fuel to a big fucking fire that we should be trying to put out.

Orlantina · 25/05/2017 09:53

What about torture?

Surely these people on the radar must know something?
We could just disappear them and torture them.

Do people who think something must be done think that's ok?

user1471545174 · 25/05/2017 09:55

Actually, ShoesHaveSouls, emotional intelligence is understanding and appreciating that KH's response , in the scheme of things, is of zero importance to anyone. Most people are more concerned about the people who've died than the opinion or response of a not terribly well and somewhat gobshitey self-publicist from the Apprentice!

But "I have more emotional intelligence" is the brand new "I have more understanding", I guess. You don't. You're just getting diverted from something important by a nobody.

Edsheeranalbumparty · 25/05/2017 09:55

Call me naive, but don't you think that if you start jailing people without charge that will just piss people off more and make the problem even worse?

Orlantina · 25/05/2017 09:57

Most people are more concerned about the people who've died than the opinion or response of a not terribly well and somewhat gobshitey self-publicist from the Apprentice

Whose views seem to be 'what many people think' on here and have a lot of support apparently.

Does that bother you?

lessworriedaboutthecat · 25/05/2017 09:58

I think we should continue doing what we're doing just now with exactly the same results. What some of the fascists like KH don't understand is that Islamic terrorism is inevitable like earthquakes or volcanoes,,

NotISaidTheWalrus · 25/05/2017 09:59

and appreciating that KH's response , in the scheme of things, is of zero importance to anyone

But its clear that it is NOT of zero importance to everyone. Did you not understand the point of the thread? That is actually the essence of it. Try reading it again, you seem to have got it very wrong.

firstcutisthedeepest · 25/05/2017 10:00

You sound rather concerned for them orlan why are you talking as if it's outrageous to suggest drastic measures in these drastic times. But talking about torture, you'd be better asking them about it.

Orlantina · 25/05/2017 10:00

You sound rather concerned for them

Who is 'them' ?

NotISaidTheWalrus · 25/05/2017 10:02

Yes, who is "them"? You're not clear.

Please be specific about the drastic measures you would like to see, and who you would like to be targeted with them.

Edsheeranalbumparty · 25/05/2017 10:02

I really don't know what KH and her ilk think is a workable solution that will solve the problem?

I do think that there are people within the Muslim community who 'hear' about this person's son or that person's brother starting to act in a worrying way, but it gets brushed under the carpet, a bit like Catholics hearing stories of Father so and so being a bit 'dodgy' but never actually taking action.

But pointing the finger of blame directly at Muslims and dividing people into 'them' who are supposed to solve the whole thing and 'us' as victims whose country is being 'invaded' is going to do precisely fuck all to make things better.

firstcutisthedeepest · 25/05/2017 10:02

Call me naive, but don't you think that if you start jailing people without charge that will just piss people off more and make the problem even worse?
It might piss them off but if they're locked up or not here they can't hurt you. They're already pissed off anyway, what do you suggest we do with them?

PlinkyTheFairyWitch · 25/05/2017 10:02

People are concerned about those whoe died and their families. People are concerned about terrorism and how best to combat it. I live in Manchester, I know people who were there but thankfully escaped unharmed. This lies very close to my heart.

Some people on this thread, myself included, are also concerned about a certain response to this horrific event which we/I believe could lead to the situation becoming worse. Fascism solves nothing, it creates more problems. That is why people object to comments like those made by KH - because we/I fear this will lead to an escalation we do not need and make things worse.

Nobody's saying KH is worse than terrorists. I'm saying she's making an already horrific situation worse by calling for fascist measures.

user1471545174 · 25/05/2017 10:04

I think you're missing the point, Orlantina. I'm certainly not advocating torture and I don't think internment is the answer. I am Irish and quite aware of the unfairness and negative ramifications of internment.

You can't honestly think that nothing should be done, though, which appears to be where you're going with this.

Orlantina · 25/05/2017 10:04

It might piss them off but if they're locked up or not here they can't hurt you. They're already pissed off anyway, what do you suggest we do with them

Again - who is THEM?

7Days · 25/05/2017 10:05

Its ridiculous to compare Katie Hopkins to the bomber.
She is more like a radical cleric.
Words and rhetoric is the first step. Wirds which play to peoples worst emotions like anger and fear. Most people shrug it off. Some come back to hear more. Of those, some people want to take action. Others add their own voices to the cause. Some of their listeners join the activists. More join the rhetoric. You reach a tipping point where more of your target group agree with your statements then don't. That's just repeated exposure working on your brain.
This happens with everything, religion, advertising, Trump, support for environmental protection. And fascism and jihadism.

Orlantina · 25/05/2017 10:05

You can't honestly think that nothing should be done, though, which appears to be where you're going with this

But things ARE being done. Look at how many terrorist plots have been stopped?

How do you think that's happened?

firstcutisthedeepest · 25/05/2017 10:06

Why would we be pointing the finger at Muslims, just the terrorist suspects is who we'd be pointing the finger at. Should we ignore them then, rather than it might make us look as if we're victimising them?

derxa · 25/05/2017 10:06

I'm saying she's making an already horrific situation worse by calling for fascist measures. She has no power whatsoever.

lessworriedaboutthecat · 25/05/2017 10:07

Or I suppose we could make it very difficult (essentially virtually impossible ) for people from Muslim countries to come to the UK permanently unless they were fully vetted and had a visa. We have more than a million unemployed after all.

Deport any of the thousands on the terrorist watch list who are not British citizens back to their countries of origin in the middle of the night without going through the courts. They can then appeal against that once their safely back home.

Leave the EU, we cant have freedom of movement with countries who are unwilling (Italy) or unable (Greece) to protect their own borders.

makeourfuture · 25/05/2017 10:07

Listen, there are pragmatic ways of addressing these things.

For instance, making it hard for them to obtain the substances to construct these devices. Establishing closer security ties to community organisations. Intelligence sharing.

They are all being done, but perhaps resources or techniques are not quite being utilised as well as they can be. We can work on that.

There are levels between doing nothing and interment camps/torture.

Orlantina · 25/05/2017 10:07

She has no power whatsoever

She gives validation as a prominent commentator - and one who is on LBC and in the Daily Mail - to what many people feel.

She has a platform.

PlinkyTheFairyWitch · 25/05/2017 10:07

derxa if you really need it spelling out for you, 7Days has done that just above.

That's if you missed the whole discussion about Nazi propaganda and how they got into power.
