I started off thinking I'd vote SNP but I've definitely settled on Labour.

I'm not pretending that any if the available options are perfect but I feel like every time Theresa May talks about Brexit and "stands up" to Europe (our closest ally and trading partner ffs), it's a bit like cringing as a racist out of touch relative starts spouting off at a party and praying to God they don't say anything too damaging for the sake of the family's reputation.

As for strong and stable....

However, I can't pretend that Labour are much better, I just know that their view of society chimes more closely with mine.

I don't want to start a bun fight, I just want to gauge how dramatic this Tory landslide is going to be or if there's still some hope....

Dons hard hat and awaits flaming!

That's interesting about conservatives pledging a free vote on fox hunting, I hadn't heard that and wondered why it had reared its head again after all this time... Not sure what lifting the ban on ivory is supposed to achieve, though. Tbh I am unlikely to ever vote tory so those policies aren't aimed at me! I find both of those policies worrying, as well as underfunded NHS and the lack of details in how the manifesto pledges will be paid for.

In contrast to others on here, I really like the lib dem proposals for drugs management, treating it as a health issue rather than a criminal one. It was recommended by the commission who looked into it and I believe it has worked well in other countries. I disagree with Farron's personal views on homosexuality but his voting record on gay rights is good so that mitigates it for me somewhat (everyone is entitled to personal opinion as long as they treat people with respect imv)

I was going to vote lib dem as I am a remain voter and they are the closest to my views. But I have been swayed by labour manifesto, which I mostly really like. It seems to offer something different rather than tiny variations of the same old policies which is what we had through 97-2010. Still not sure who to go for. Both the local Labour and Lib Dem candidates have been good MPs for this area so will probably decide on national issues.

I've found this discussion really interesting, especially people who are life long voters changing sides, could be a big shake up!

What do you specifically hate about - poor people, vulnerable people, children, nurses, old people, foxes, disabled people, people with learning difficulties, the police, the fire service?

Coffeetasteslikeshit · 23/05/2017 09:56

I've voted Lib Dems the last few times, but am voting Labour this time. I've been waiting all my life for a manifesto like theirs.

PigletJohn · 23/05/2017 10:28

bruffian

I don't follow you there.

Let's suppose that sale of alcohol is prohibited. My twelve year old sister goes to an illegal drinking den and swallows a bottle of sweetened brake fluid which blinds and paralyzes her.

As an alternative, would I be right to oppose the sale of duty-paid, controlled content, wine, beer and spirits under government regulation in licenced premises, to over-18s only? Which would drive the illegal poteen trade out of business?

bertiesgal · 23/05/2017 10:30

I'm a wee bit frustrated about Labour's lack of direction regarding Brexit.

I'm not comfortable with May's aggressive stance (it's all rhetoric at this stage right now mind you). I think that we need to continue to work closely with Europe and not completely isolate ourselves but I'm not really clear on Labour's position/ how they'd approach it.

Agree Keir Starmer does seem better qualified than Davis but as this is unchartered territory who knows?

You don't have to follow me. I don't like it as a policy. I think there's far more important things to spend time on. If it's not an issue for you then great.

bertiesgal · 23/05/2017 10:35

I just want everything to go back to pre-all referendums normality (stamps foot!)

I know I don't have to follow you. I'd be interested to know if your opinion makes sense.

bruffian · 23/05/2017 10:44

It makes sense to me Smile

Dianneabbottsmathsteacher · 23/05/2017 10:47

Life long labour voter can't vote for this shadow front bench as they are crap.

Probably Tory as least worst option but not happy

FlapAttack88 · 23/05/2017 10:47

Usually vote lib dems but going with labour for this one.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 23/05/2017 11:27

Yes, I was voting Lib Dem and I'm now voting Tory.

FlapAttack88 · 23/05/2017 11:30

Haha whattodo... may as well have both stuck with lib dems!

NoArmaniNoPunani · 23/05/2017 11:39

I'm voting Labour as usual. I think I'm in a safe Tory constituency, which is strange because the local FB groups are very pro Labour

Scattymere · 23/05/2017 11:44

Voted Tory for 18 years. 90% sure will be casting my first ever Lib Dem vote for the following reasons-

  1. conservatives bringing back fox hunting
  2. conservatives banning school dinners for kids (though agree most of us can afford to send a packed lunch so interested to hear if school lunches or subsidies would apply to less well off families)
  3. Teresa May sneakily scrapping ban on ivory products
  4. Tim Farron is likeable and decent

1-3 All just nasty, pathetic, mean policies / desperate to appeal to toffs

Gottagetmoving · 23/05/2017 11:52

Labour voter all my life. This time I just can't vote for Corbyn. I'll vote Tory I think

I can never understand this sort of thing!
How can you believe in Labour policies but vote Tory? It makes absolutely no sense. I can only assume that you vote on what someone looks like, or sounds like and have no political knowledge whatsoever.

bruffian · 23/05/2017 11:56

The conservatives are NOT bringing back fox hunting! They will have a free vote and it will probably be to regulate it rather than overturn the ban. And I doubt it will go through. They have promised to have a vote for years. Dave passed on it. The countryside campaigners have made it clear that if they don't have a vote this parliament they will no longer campaign for the tories.

Disclaimer - I don't like fox hunting and I haven't yet voted Tory

Frillyhorseyknickers · 23/05/2017 12:10

I'll be voting conservative as I always do. We're arable farmers and I work loosely in the industry as a land agent and no other party ever puts a convincing agricultural policy forwards.

BaggyCheeks · 23/05/2017 12:17

I was going to vote Lib Dem, but I'll be voting Labour. Not because I disagree with Lib Dem policies, but because Labour have the best chance of ousting my current SNP MP out of their seat.

2rebecca · 23/05/2017 12:35

I don't understand why TM is scrapping the ban on ivory products. It's a stupid thing to do as few people benefit from it and it portrays her as happy to support the poaching and killing of elephants. If you're going for the compassionate conservative brand this is pointlessly shooting yourself in the foot.

PigletJohn · 23/05/2017 13:01

I hear a lot of poached ivory is falsely sold with an "antique" label on it. The illegal ivory trade depends on loopholes like this.

A total ban on ivory sales closes this loophole for criminals to use, and also inconveniences antique and curio dealers who have a tiny amount of trade in ivory labelled as antique. Perhaps very little of their stock is falsely labelled. I don't know. Perhaps it makes a noticeable difference to their profits.

By chance Teresa has a friend who is chair of the British Antique Dealers Association.

Biker47 · 23/05/2017 13:47

Nice strawman argument there, you failed.

*Voted Tory for 18 years. 90% sure will be casting my first ever Lib Dem vote for the following reasons-

So presumably you voted for the conservatives in both the 2010 and 2015 election, where a free vote on fox hunting was a part of their manifesto aswell as 2017....

GretchenFranklin · 23/05/2017 14:13

The lifting of the ivory ban and fox-hunting ban just underlines what an unpleasant and cruel Tory government this is.

I'll stick with Labour thanks.
