To ask you to name the best hotel you've ever stayed in?

I love hotels. The best I've ever stayed in is probably a toss up between the Shard in London (Shangri-La) or Phu Petra in Krabi, Thailand.

Do you have any memorable (for the right reasons) hotel stays? Currently trying to organise this years holiday and can't decide on hotels.

On the contrary, the worst was a hotel (so called) in koh Pangan which was an absolute hell hole. Concrete shack with a concrete block topped with a mucky old mattress for a bed! I cried!

A little known place called knockinaam lodge in Dumfries and Galloway.

About 8 rooms, Aa rosette food (for some reason recently lost their Michelin star) and amazing personal service. Private beach, astoundingly beautiful country around.

Marco polo, Kowloon in hong Kong. Waldorf Astoria or Berkeley intercontinental, new York.

A hotel in an island on Lake Pokhara in Nepal. Each room was its own little chalet, looking out onto mangrove trees. In the morning, you could get up before breakfast and see the sun rise over Mount Everest. Stunning.

Mine was the Hotel Astali in Rethymnon, Crete. It's a basic 3 star Greek hotel. It was small and fairly basic, but was so unbelievably clean.
Even the balcony door runners were spotless, it was beyond clean, it was immaculate. I dont know who was cleaning it but they made a bloody fantastic job of it.
Its the cleanest hotel I have ever stayed in and made some 5 * establishments look slovenly.

Melia hotel in Berlin - biggest breakfasts I've ever seen!

Radisson Blu in Edinburgh - Again, amazing breakfasts and great service and location.

Couples San Souci in Jamaica or The TItanic in Liverpool

Mominatrix that looks AMAZING! I really want to go there. We stayed at Deetjen's Big Surrey Inn and had dinner at Nepenthe years ago and that was fantastic.

MrsWhirly · 21/05/2017 21:11

Mina a'Salam in Dubai.

Big Sur!

Any Aman hotel. Anywhere.

Iamtheresurrection · 21/05/2017 21:12

Le Meridien and the Gresham palace in Budapest.

Citizen M Glasgow and NYC.

A thompson hotel in Vancouver but they don't seem to own it any more.

Iamtheresurrection · 21/05/2017 21:14

Wrong hotel group - it was the Sutton Palace in Vancouver.

flippychick · 21/05/2017 21:15

The Grosvenor, Chester or Mayfair, London for me...

deste · 21/05/2017 21:15

The Al Bustan Palace in Muscat.

Wildflower Hall in Kufri, near Shimla in India.
Just perfect. Not pretentious and wonderful service.
Eating breakfast on the terrace in strong winter sunshine looking out at mountains and pine forests was just perfection.
They have a hot tub looking out over the forest too.
Kids loved it, we loved it. Anyone would absolutely love it.
Tho' not the horrendous mountain journey from Chandigarh to get there. After the sixth hour Dc2 was violently sick. DC1 spent the remaining hour bemoaning this.
On the way back we used sat nav to reduce the journey down to 3.5hrs (driver was good at driving but shocking at navigation).
Would not recommend Shimla (stayed at Cecil Oberoi there). More pretentious, significantly less charming or special.

Another vote for Gleneagles - fabulous service, felt really pampered and amazing food.
Shangri la in KL which we got as part of a holiday with BA. Hotel was very quiet so they voluntarily upgraded us to a fabulous suite room with spectacular views.
Not strictly a hotel but Queens Grill Suite on Cunard Queen Victoria cruise ship- fab food, spacious cabin and a butler!

MaQueen · 21/05/2017 21:17

Ooooh, tricky one...it's not the poshest hotel I've stayed in (don't actually like uber smart/formal hotels), but I absolutely loved Hotel Tresanton in St Mawes. I love it's relaxed atmosphere, and the staff are that wonderful combination of being totally smooth/professional but also warm and friendly.

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 21/05/2017 21:17

Caesar's Palace, Las Vegas, felt like a movie star Grin

miwelaisjacydo · 21/05/2017 21:17

Broadmead Boutique B&B Tenby nicest for food, atmosphere, towels and breakfast.

littleredpear · 21/05/2017 21:17

Sofitel Legende Metropole in Hanoi is just amazing. Fabulous service and such a historic hotel that combines old with new perfectly. A very good French restaurant there too. Other Sofitels I love are Melbourne and Macau but Metropole in Hanoi is in a different league.

For Bangkok, I like The Peninsula (although the food - apart from breakfast - is a bit meh) as long as you have a balcony overlooking the river.

Worse hotel was in the red light district in Paris (on a cheap girls weekend away) when we had some pervy Peter Stringfellow lookalike who lived in the apartment facing us and he insisted on sitting / standing naked in his window every night if he knew we were in. We ended up creeping around with the lights off. It was funny but not somewhere I'd stay again!

Mollypolly2610 · 21/05/2017 21:18

Shangri la al Husn in muscat. Luxury at its best.

Sedona123 · 21/05/2017 21:18

My favourites so far are -

The May Fair in London.
The Carlyle in New York City.
Gritti Palace in Venice.
Le Manoir in Oxfordshire.

All very luxurious, and with fabulous locations and impeccable service.

Weedsnseeds1 · 21/05/2017 21:19

Oh and India House in New Orleans, it's a hostel not a hotel, but great atmosphere!
