To think it's absolutely fucking vile

To suck the snot out of your child's nose and swallow it. Or spit it, for that matter. I just heaved watching a woman do this to her snotty toddler this afternoon at soft play. Hmm

Not even your own child's, Koala?

Jesus I thought it was bad enough when I tried one of those baby nose sucking things Confused
My mum bought be one, (it's like a straw and you suck to loosen snot)
I only used it once because the fear of her snot accidentally entering my mouth was too hard to bare!!

HornyTortoise · 22/05/2017 19:22

Gross to swallow, I would have said gross fullstop however I had to do this once when DD was small. I know it sounds really disgusting but she literally couldn't breathe and it was all I could think of, a sucker dropper thing didn't work, I had to suck and spit. She was fine afterwards but I was heaving for hours. But when its a choice between doing something disgusting and watching your baby struggle to breathe...I would chose the gross thing all day long. But still...ugh.

BlueDaBaDee · 22/05/2017 20:21

When my baby was tiny, she was really struggling to breathe due to a congested nose. It was in the middle of the night, single parent, don't drive etc etc. So couldn't get a snot sucker thing. I did it, I was terrified because my baby couldn't breathe. Am I a dirty birch? Hmm

Littleraincloud · 22/05/2017 20:49

I can see how it works. When mine are congested I put them in a warm bath and when i wash their faces sort of pull the snot out with a flannel until it stops coming and they are always loads better after

I've never been in the situation with a horribly bunged up child, so I assume if it was necessary.

However I've had my hand up the u-bend more times that I care to remember due to DSs prolific pooing (sometimes with only a leaks plastic bag for protection).

SashaSashays · 22/05/2017 21:00

West Indian DH will do this, I think its also absolutely fucking vile, but then we all do things we don't necessarily enjoy for the sake of someone else.

Not to say I wasn't agog the first time, until the horror set in that is.

harverina · 22/05/2017 21:15

That is absolutely vile and totally unnecessary!!

My cousin once did it for her tiny baby who has bronchiolitis and was really distressed...that's a whole different ball game though.

Lonelynessie · 22/05/2017 21:20

I suppose I never really thought about it, but it's a quite common thing to do in my community, but I've only ever seen people do it with a flannel/muslin over the nose so that you didn't actually get any snot in your mouth.

I wonder does it increase immunity in bf mothers' milk, to help fight the infection? It likely does.
