To suck the snot out of your child's nose and swallow it. Or spit it, for that matter. I just heaved watching a woman do this to her snotty toddler this afternoon at soft play. Hmm

OP posts:
GahBuggerit · 19/05/2017 19:01

all of them? Unless I've misconstrued every single post there are lots of posters agreeing that the idea in general of sucking snot to help a small child breathe is literally actually sickening. Like, literally

MaidOfStars · 19/05/2017 19:05

When I think of all the snot I hoik down my throats when I have a cold....

Ankleswingers · 19/05/2017 19:06

Oh dear.... wish I'd never read this.

Just eaten dinner Shock

greeeen · 19/05/2017 19:07

I haven't had a need to do this with DD (1yr) so far but I don't think it's that bad.

Beansonapost · 19/05/2017 19:08

God it's what my mother did with us as children. Not when we were old enough to blow though and she never swallowed.

It's funny, because my DH is English and did it for our DD before we discovered nose Freda. TBH DH is more effective than nose Freda.

... don't know what the big deal is...

MartinaMartini · 19/05/2017 19:13

Blimey.... Grim doesn't come close.

Popskipiekin · 19/05/2017 19:13

Oh really, everyone on MN seems to have very weak stomachs! I've done this for both my DC, didn't even think twice about it - we do have the nosefrida but that can be quite distressing for a child already in distress, and sucking the snot is quick and effective. I do spit! And I don't do it in public.

MrsPeelyWaly · 19/05/2017 19:14

kissing with tongues someone you've just met (common in the English culture) eh, what? Where the hell do you live

Where the poster lives is irrelevant. The fact is that some cultures do not consider it acceptable.

originalbiglymavis · 19/05/2017 19:19

I'm just wondering where they live to see folks 'commonly' french kissing virtual strangers!

Midnight0 · 19/05/2017 19:33

My husband is from West Africa. It's also very common there. Not swallowing, just sucking the snot out and spitting it in the tissue or the like.

Upanddownroundandround · 19/05/2017 19:38

Was not expecting that! Shock

Foxysoxy01 · 19/05/2017 19:43

I feel really quite unwell having read the OP I did actually retch.

How very grim.

BertsBlanket · 19/05/2017 19:44

Snotty grubby toddler who stick their fingers and tongues in all sorts of disgusting places and are generally crusty and sticky - I just couldn't.

Poorly tiny baby struggling to feed and breathe - doesn't feel gross at all so long as it's my baby (although I've never actually done it).

1 year old would be my absolute cut-off, but it starts feeling grimish about 6 months.

Brittbugs80 · 19/05/2017 19:46

I had a child that needed sending home from nursery with a mega bunged up nose. Nan came to pick her up and sat her on the side, put her mouth over child's nose and mouth and sucked a whole load of snot out then spat it in a tissue and binned it!

I've also had a parent get child's ear wax on their finger and lick it, to tell me it's ok, it's regular wax not an infection!

GrumpyDullard · 19/05/2017 19:47

Constantly wiping a snotty nose makes it red and sore without really getting rid of the snot. This is much kinder to the poor baby. Yes, I have done this for all three of my kids when they were too little to blow their noses BUT I would never do it in public and I wouldn't want to have to see someone else do it either.

WanderingTrolley1 · 19/05/2017 21:28

Ohhh. Earwax tasting... why haven't I tried this yet?!

kali110 · 19/05/2017 21:32

Brittbugs80 Confused
Where is this kissing strangers with tongues? Certainly no one i know!

AceholeRimmer · 19/05/2017 21:41

Some people are so delicate.. I've never heard of this but will do it to my baby if he gets congested, it's a genius way of doing it GrinWipes noses are so sore.

Bambambini · 19/05/2017 22:11

"Where is this kissing strangers with tongues? Certainly no one i know!"

In the street, nightclubs, parties, festivsls. You never snogged someone you just met, had ONSs?

BMW6 · 19/05/2017 22:32

I read about an Irish father doing this in Angela's Ashes (but he spat the snot out).

Only1scoop · 19/05/2017 22:36

DissonantInterval · 20/05/2017 00:12

I saw it on a documentary called 'Babies' which looks at the first year of life of 4 babies in different parts of the world. I thought it was so simple but inspired.

Not wanting to derail the thread but at what age can children generally work out how to blow their noses? DGD is 20 months and seems to hate having snot candles coming out of her nostrils when she has a cold. She doesn't mind me wiping it but when I've tried to show her how to blow her nose, she hasn't the foggiest idea what I'm on about. It's so frustrating because if she could just have a good old blow she'd feel so much more comfortable. I can't remember when DD started to understand blowing her nose.

liz70 · 20/05/2017 00:19

I've never blown my nose in my life. It's something that's never occurred to me to do.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 20/05/2017 00:27

You've never blown your nose. In your life. I hope you don't think I'm being nosey, but what the hell do you do.
Mind you on second thoughts. Don't answer that. Grin

RightOnTheEdge · 20/05/2017 00:52

I would have gipped if I had seen that, I feel queasy now just reading it and really Shock that so many people say they have done this. I honestly didn't know this was a thing.
Also suprised at the pp who has never blown their nose.

I love Mumsnet I learn new things everyday. You lot can make me giggle, feel tearful, shocked or pukey all in one day Grin
