Corbyn and IRA

AIBU to ask that someone please explain how he is allowed to lead a party after this?

"It can be disclosed that for seven years running, while the IRA “armed struggle” was at its height, Mr Corbyn attended and spoke at official republican commemorations to honour dead IRA terrorists, IRA “prisoners of war” and the active “soldiers of the IRA.”

The official programme for the 1988 event, held one week after the IRA murdered three British servicemen in the Netherlands, states that “force of arms is the only method capable of bringing about a free and united Socialist Ireland.” Mr Corbyn used the event to attack the Anglo-Irish Agreement, the precursor of the peace process."

Taken from a Telegraph article. I was unaware his support of the IRA was this involved until this morning.

While fox hunting, cuts to MH services and privatising education are morally repugnant, they are not the same as shaking the hand of a man whose crew has just tried to murder the democratically elected government of the UK. And I hated Thatcher.

I'm lost who is this man? And are you sure Corbyn was the only one to ever shake his hand?

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 14/05/2017 14:06

Not many people will share you view as the vast majority of the public view human suffering from terrorism and the impact it as as a far more important issue than a few foxes being killed by a few who enjoy blood thirsty sports

MaggieLightBlue · 14/05/2017 14:07

Gosh, isn't that amazing. Prince Charles and Jeremy Corbyn have A LOT in common.

MaggieLightBlue · 14/05/2017 14:09

And May and Trump also seem to have a great deal in common.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 14/05/2017 14:12

Surely not so very surprising ... if an almost complete lack of judgement is what you're looking for, I'd say they've got more in common that perhaps we realise Wink

Privileged you mean?

Tanith · 14/05/2017 14:13

According to the Andrew Marr show on TV this morning, Michael Fallon attended a reception in Syria to celebrate the re-election of Bashar al Assad.

Is that in the same league of moral integrity?

makeourfuture · 14/05/2017 14:21

Back to Yemen?

Radishal · 14/05/2017 14:25

This man is Gerry Adams whom JC invited to Parliament just after the Brighton Bomb and shook his hand.

As for Michael Fallon propping up Assad. That is called realpolitik and is what people in government do despite public disquiet because they think it will have a positive outcome longer term. And they sometimes get it very wrong.

This is not the same as some obscure back bencher like Corbyn was trying to raise his credibility profile by cosying up to one repulsive side and ignoring the other because they aren't as "cool".

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 14/05/2017 14:26

Grin Piglet

Just for your team?

Radishal · 14/05/2017 14:34

Who's my team for heaven's sake?

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 14/05/2017 14:36

It's diplomacy that is needed in international politics

Does it at times anger me absolutely but I recognise the importance of it

Corbyn's meetings have had nothing at all to do with any peace process, international political diplomacy, trade agreements or had any influence on policy and neither was the intention there it was to show solidarity

makeourfuture · 14/05/2017 14:39

Who's my team for heaven's sake?

I am wondering myself....

MaggieLightBlue · 14/05/2017 14:47

Theresa May is so far failing spectacularly wrt international diplomacy.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 14/05/2017 14:53

Theresa May is so far failing spectacularly wrt international diplomacy.

Well the majority of the country sermon to think she is better at it than Corbyn.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 14/05/2017 14:53

*seems

DioneTheDiabolist · 14/05/2017 14:55

YABU OP. Because your ignorance of NI is glaringly obvious. Vote Corben or don't, I don't give a fuck but don't blame it on shit that you don't know about NI, and couldn't be arsed finding out about before you stated this thread.

TheGentleMoose · 14/05/2017 15:04

@DioneTheDiabolist Where have I said that I won't be voting Corbyn? Where have I said that I won't be voting Corbyn because of this? Stop making assumptions. I asked for explanations as to how he could lead a party with things like this in the background.

@Planbatman Thank you for the explanation!

Moose Does anyone have any good information sources that share why Labour won't stand in Northern Ireland please?

There is a party called the Social Democratic and Labour Party in Northern Ireland. The SDLP for short. They take the seats in parliament and the Labour whip.

Radishal · 14/05/2017 15:35

How can he lead the party with this history? No fucking idea - just as some people don't care about the antisemitism he indulges, some people think his indulging of the IRA is ok.
I care about these things; I will not vote for a party that elected him as leader.
No amount of promises about renationalising the railways or other pseudo socialism will make me change my mind.

Radishal · 14/05/2017 15:42

I went to uni with people like Corbyn- he's not that much older than me. Fucked things up for Labour for a generation; now they are trying it again.

makeourfuture · 14/05/2017 15:54

now they are trying it again.
