Corbyn and IRA

AIBU to ask that someone please explain how he is allowed to lead a party after this?

"It can be disclosed that for seven years running, while the IRA “armed struggle” was at its height, Mr Corbyn attended and spoke at official republican commemorations to honour dead IRA terrorists, IRA “prisoners of war” and the active “soldiers of the IRA.”

The official programme for the 1988 event, held one week after the IRA murdered three British servicemen in the Netherlands, states that “force of arms is the only method capable of bringing about a free and united Socialist Ireland.” Mr Corbyn used the event to attack the Anglo-Irish Agreement, the precursor of the peace process."

Taken from a Telegraph article. I was unaware his support of the IRA was this involved until this morning.

@Radishal - I just didn't know the depth of it, or the reasons behind why it was said.

The Good Friday Agreement allowed for dual British/Irish citizenship for Nortern Irish people. Before this time, those born on the island of Ireland were entitled to an Irish passport. This did not depend on where their parents were born.

Elendon · 13/05/2017 19:16

Call me a cynic but I suspect given the OP's ignorance of the effect of Brexit on NI that Corbyn's support for the IRA is more about him Being A Bad Person than any interest in NI politics.

Brilliantly put Flavia

Elendon · 13/05/2017 19:18

Wasn't margaret thatcher bosom buddies with the dictator Pinochet, responsible the the slaughter of 1000s and torture of 10s of thousands.

Yes, and indeed she invited him to the UK. Poor wee soul he was.

Elendon · 13/05/2017 19:20

Ah yes, the Snap Election. That thing that wasn't going to happen again.

Elendon · 13/05/2017 19:22

I consider myself Irish, which is a race within the UK, but I'm also British. I'm also Irish too.

Bogs exist in Ireland and I'm surprised you've not heard of Bog Irish.

Elendon · 13/05/2017 19:24

You might OP consider yourself English. But you are also British too.

Elendon · 13/05/2017 19:26

And of course we have May who is terribly, terribly good friends with Donald Trump.

Elendon · 13/05/2017 19:30

en.wiktionary.org/wiki/bog_Irish

I'm no fan of Corbyn. But you deliberately told me to bog off.

TessTube · 13/05/2017 19:47

Seeing as the OP had no idea you were even Irish then it's a bit of a leap to accuse her of being racist.

Are you saying you aren't a fan of Corbyn, that's odd as last time people were discussing it you turned up going on about shitting in buckets.

chipsandpeas · 13/05/2017 20:00

Whilst you're reading up on those things OP, read up on the stories of the hundreds of innocent men, women and children who were slaughtered by the IRA.

and what about the innocent men, women and children that were killed by the UDA/british army

there were killings on both sides, dont forget that, it wasnt one sided

TheGentleMoose · 13/05/2017 20:04

@Elendon - where do you get the idea I am English from?! Assumption much.

"Bogs exist in Ireland and I'm surprised you've not heard of Bog Irish."

Bogs exist in a wide-range of countries, and I haven't hear of any of them being termed "Bog English" for example either. I said Bog Off - not anything about Bog Irish, or Bog any other country - Bog Off is a recognised term telling someone to go away. It has nothing to do with race. As I said previously I didn't know what race you define as.

You similarly have no idea what race I am, or what I define my race to be.

He shook Adams' hand just after the IRA bomb attack on Brighton hotel. I hate Thatcher. I have more than a little sympathy with the nationalist cause. I thought JC was disgraceful to do that.

Radishal · 13/05/2017 20:08

And don't kid me he was some great proponent of peace. He was a no mark back bencher who liked a pose.

Fortnum · 13/05/2017 20:16

I was 11 when the IRA bombed the Royal Marine School of Music in Deal. 11 Musicians were slaughtered. I saw the plume of smoke from my school playground. Wives Widowed And children left without Fathers. The band marched through the town a few days later ... in defiance. Ive never forgotten it. I served 16 years in HM forces subsequently. Jeremy Corbyn is a contrarion... and an absolute cunt. Fuck the current Labour Party, i will vote Conservative until Labour manages to reinvent itself.... and that does not mean appeasing the communist Corbyn or dianne abbott - the pair of them make my skin crawl

Livelovebehappy · 13/05/2017 20:20

Corbyn tries to rewrite the history of his links to the IRA. He is trying to make fools of his supporters by selling them a fabricated tale of his past. He was absolutely against the peace process, and was also part of the editorial team of the pro Republican magazine at the time, the Labour Briefing, which fully supported the murders of innocent people, and totally opposed any move towards a peace process. He tries to make us believe he was a big promoter of the peace process, when this is totally disclaimed in the talks he gave at the rallies in OPs post. If you have beliefs, even if abhorrent, then at least have the balls to stand by them, and not abandon your principles to gain a political foothold.

WifeofUthred · 13/05/2017 20:29

Nelson Mandela supported the IRA too.

Radishal · 13/05/2017 20:33

Don't mush it with Mandela references. JC ain't Nelson Mandela.

Fortnum · 13/05/2017 20:35

Say what you want about Nelson Mandela but after that 25 stretch on Robbin Island.. at least he didnt reoffend

OliviaPopeRules · 13/05/2017 21:17

I don't get a few things about this thread;

  • why people are so hostile to the OP for asking the question insisting she prob doesn't really understand or give a shit about NI. Well maybe u are right and she doesn't but the IRA killed civilians outside NI and I would guess most of the British Army they killed were from other parts of the UK. So maybe that is why she is interested and wants to know what JC's links are.
  • oh and of course she must be English and have voted for Brexit cos those bastards don't give a shit about anyone but themselves.
  • Nelson Mandela supported the IRA, and, why would I care, he is not running a party who could possibly win a GE making him PM of this country
  • General whataboutery , Thatcher did this, whoever did that etc. Again irrelevant we are discussing Corbyn and the IRA.
- These myths have been debunked. What myths, they are facts. Maybe you have a different take on them, maybe you think it would a good idea to bring Gerry Adams to the british parliament a couple of weeks after the IRA that he was a part of tried to murder the british government. That is fine you are entitled to that opinion and I suspect a number of people agree with you but they are not myths they are facts. - Finally if you really want proof that JC couldn't give a fuck about the people of NI how about the fact that he voted against the Good Friday agreement in parliament!
PigletWasPoohsFriend · 13/05/2017 21:21

Finally if you really want proof that JC couldn't give a fuck about the people of NI how about the fact that he voted against the Good Friday agreement in parliament!

A very inconvenient truth.

wtffgs · 13/05/2017 21:28

Ooh?

Are we getting rattled Tory HQ - getting stooges to post on MN?

Radishal · 13/05/2017 21:29

"Are we getting rattled Tory HQ - getting stooges to post on MN?"

Don't be so fucking ridiculous.

OliviaPopeRules · 13/05/2017 21:30

wtffgs of course cos they couldn't be genuine people who disagree with you!

MaudGonneMad · 13/05/2017 21:37

Is there a link to provide evidence that Corbyn voted against the Good Friday Agreement? Google doesn't provide anything - just his opposition to the Anglo-Irish Agreement.

And of course, that was opposed by all the NI unionist parties as well.
