Do people really think no black British or immigrants voted Brexit?

streetface · 09/05/2017 10:11

Just that really. Laughing at some of the comments about Brexit being a racist vote from people who don't like 'brown people'.

I wonder how many of these people commenting live in predominantly black areas and are remotely aware of how many non-white people voted for Brexit. Lots of naive Mumsnetters.

SapphireStrange I am pretty sure you are not fully up to speed with the workings of the EU. None of us are.

The public were given lots of different messages from lots of different people. Contradictory messages.

Oh hell, I thought we'd stopped massive generalisations about leavers/remainers. They are all meaningless: people had multiple and differing reasons (or none) for voting as they did.

This with bells on.

street, I was not thick enough to believe the messages about immigration/the NHS/bendy bananas etc, as some people were, including, regrettably, people I know in RL.

surferjet · 09/05/2017 12:25

It's hilarious that everyone who voted to remain, assumes that the 'leave' voters are all nasty little middle aged white people

They do that because it makes their anger easier to process.
putting all leave voters in a convenient little box makes life easy for them. If they had to think about leave voters being anything other than white racists their heads would explode. The fact that many leave voters were black, Aisan, or fairly recent immigrants, is just too much for them.

SapphireStrange · 09/05/2017 12:27

Oh, I'm fully aware that Leavers come in all colours.

Let me just check if my head's exploded.

No. Not yet.

TBH, you could probably describe me as one of those nasty little middle aged white people Grin

WoodPigeonInFlight · 09/05/2017 12:38

ItsAllGoingToBeFine You are not making yourself look very bright on this thread.

WoodPigeonInFlight · 09/05/2017 12:42

Can some of the pp slagging off leave voters as stupid and/or racist on this thread please tell me how they are voting in the General Election please, just out of interest?

Valentine2 · 09/05/2017 12:47

Disclaimer: I don't think ALL leave voters are stupid/racist etc etc so please don't call me off on this.

Among all my Asian friends, the highly educated ones voted Remain. School leavers voted Brexit. It's a pattern I saw.

Kokusai · 09/05/2017 12:48

Loads did. Google "pulling the ladder up".

histinyhandsarefrozen · 09/05/2017 12:55

I think that information would be a very intelligent way for anyone to decide how to vote woodpigeon Grin
Forget policies, forget personalities, forget manifestos, just find out who someone you don't like on the Internet voted for- then do the Opposite.

How dare you say some leavers are thick!

WoodPigeonInFlight · 09/05/2017 12:55

Valentine It's a fairly well known and accepted fact that there is a correlation between education level and voting leave/remain so I don't know why you are saying no-one is ready to accept that your enourmous and impeccably representative sample might be true.

I think it is the extrapolation from there being a correlation with education level to "all leavers are stupid and/or racist" that plenty of pp are spouting on this thread that people are pointing out is nonsense. I'm sure you will agree there is a huge gulf between these two points of view.

WoodPigeonInFlight · 09/05/2017 12:59

I asked a question because I am interested in the answer. There is another thread where ppl are arguing about voting at the GE and I think it is of interest to know how ppl who have no respect for others who have different views will be voting.

But do carry on with your sneering, cheap point scoring and personal attacks histiny rather than discussing the issues, if you believe that is the best way to approach political discussion.

specialsubject · 09/05/2017 13:02

The op is just a long winded way of saying ' all leave voters are racists'. Somebody has then added ' all leave voters are stupid'.

No wonder it comes across as concern over with tarquin and cressida will still be able to get jobs selling shots in magaluf.

histinyhandsarefrozen · 09/05/2017 13:04

Oh yes, that's the best way to approach political discussion.

WoodPigeonInFlight · 09/05/2017 13:05

And fyi histiny I know how I am voting. I am interested in trying to understand what has gone so wrong with the left and why name-calling and insults seem to have replaced political argument. I would be very interested to know if all the name callers are Labour / Lib Dem voters. Perhaps not, perhaps some Tories. Please do tell.

WoodPigeonInFlight · 09/05/2017 13:06

How will you be voting histiny ?

histinyhandsarefrozen · 09/05/2017 13:16

You originally said you wanted the opinion of people who slagged off leave voters as stupid and/or racist on this thread. I haven't actually done that. I do think some of their reasoning is but that's hardly controversial.

Still...

This country is fucked because of Brexit - and the people who voted it. I believe the next few years will be shit. So I feel this election is pretty pointless in the bigger scheme of things.

I wouldn't vote Tory and I can't vote Labour right now. I'm still wavering between Lib Dem and spoiling my paper.
I hope that helps.

wasonthelist · 09/05/2017 13:20

turkeys voted for christmas
You win the award for being first to parrot this for the twenty seven millionth time.

Fair enough, you haven't.

wasonthelist · 09/05/2017 13:21

No it isn't.

histinyhandsarefrozen · 09/05/2017 13:24

We'll have to agree to disagree on that then.

hackmum · 09/05/2017 13:28

Apparently quite a lot of people in the Indian restaurant trade voted for Brexit. This is because there is a shortage of Indian chefs and, at the moment, immigration restrictions mean that you can't just bring people in from India unless you're paying them more than £35k.

They were given the impression by the Vote Leave campaign that if they voted Brexit, then the rules would be changed - migrants from the EU would no longer get priority, and it would be easier to bring in people from India.

And lo and behold, it turned out that Vote Leave were lying to them. There's a surprise.

GruffaloPants · 09/05/2017 13:29

A Polish woman at my work voted for Brexit as "it's the only way to stop Muslims taking over"

bittorrent123 · 09/05/2017 13:30

Oh for goodness sake.

There are plenty of good reasons to vote out without immigration coming into it. There were plenty of good reasons to vote to stay in.

The amount of people who can't see both sides of the argument and are drawn into the medias portrayal of this being all about immigration is baffling.

The ethnicity of the voter is irrelevant.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 09/05/2017 13:32

Not all brexit voters were racist, but all rascists voted Brexit
