Do people really think no black British or immigrants voted Brexit?

streetface · 09/05/2017 10:11

Just that really. Laughing at some of the comments about Brexit being a racist vote from people who don't like 'brown people'.

I wonder how many of these people commenting live in predominantly black areas and are remotely aware of how many non-white people voted for Brexit. Lots of naive Mumsnetters.

I don't understand what you are trying to say either.

You think mumsnetters are naive because they don't know any non-white people voted leave?

Most of us do know non-white people voted leave.

You think the fact that non-white people voted leave means that Brexit could never motivated by racist reasons?

You're wrong.

Goldfishjane · 09/05/2017 10:34

Dawn "No, we're aware that some turkeys voted for christmas."

.??

So if you are not white and your family has been here for decades, you are a turkey? How about a white person whose family came from Poland after the war? Still a turkey? How do you figure this out, is it a skin colour thing?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 09/05/2017 10:36

Yes I posted in response to a specific comment on here that says "Brexiteers are just people that don't like brown people"

Ah ok. That is incorrect. Brexiteers are racist or stupid (often both). The comment you quoted excludes the stupidity, which is incorrect.

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 09/05/2017 10:36

goldfish

Its nothing to do with skin colour

Goldfishjane · 09/05/2017 10:39

Rufus, I'm looking for Dawn to clarify the turkey comment.....

streetface · 09/05/2017 10:39

Ah ok. That is incorrect. Brexiteers are racist or stupid (often both). ""The comment you quoted excludes the stupidity, which is incorrect.""

You think black people can be racist against white people? They can be prejudice, sure. But where is the structural power that makes them racist?

The ONLY reason people voted to leave the EU was based on immigration according to your comment. That seems to be a very narrow and naive viewpoint.

OP posts:
RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 09/05/2017 10:41

Then i will leave you to it gold

But it sounds a bit like you are trying to make it a race thing rather than a flippant 'people voting for something that is actually going to hurt them" comment

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 09/05/2017 10:43

Eh.

Brexiteers are

Racist
Or
Stupid
Or
Racist and stupid

Therefore is incorrect to say all brexiteers are racist as many were stupid and not racist.

Non-white people voting for Brexit may well fall into the "stupid" category.

Goldfishjane · 09/05/2017 10:44

Rufus, the thread is kind of about that?

Anyway, I'm confused by Dawn's comment so I was just explaining that.

PaintingByNumbers · 09/05/2017 10:45

goldfishjane, are you asking what does 'turkeys voting for christmas' mean? it means people voting for something that will hurt them.

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 09/05/2017 10:46

Fair enough gold Smile

AtrociousCircumstance · 09/05/2017 10:48

Regardless of who voted for it and why, Brexit is a fucking disaster which will decimate this country further. Hate crimes and racist abuse iare hugely increased post Brexit. The city is about to lose more than 80K jobs in finance.

Things are going to get much, much worse.

Whoever you are who voted for this dumbshit move - thanks a fucking lot.

histinyhandsarefrozen · 09/05/2017 10:48

What about a nut roast?

Or a brussel sprout.

You mumsnetters are so naive.

Goldfishjane · 09/05/2017 10:49

Painting, I know what it means!

streetface · 09/05/2017 10:52

So people who are not fully up to speed with the workings of the EU are 'thick'?

How about being angry at David 'call me Dave' Cameron for asking people in the first place.

Calling people racist and thick every time they expressed frustration is a massive part of the social problems that caused Brexit.

OP posts:
ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 09/05/2017 10:56

I'd say that people voting to leave the EU through frustration is pretty thick, yes.

I also think that people not understanding what they were voting for is pretty stupid too.

And of course Cameron should never have had the referendum, I guess he must have had the naive idea that less than 50% of the UK population were racist and / or thick.

user1493022461 · 09/05/2017 10:57

Voting to leave the EU when you don't understand the EU is a bit thick, yes. What else would you call it?

Mummyoflittledragon · 09/05/2017 10:59

You think black people can be racist against white people? They can be prejudice, sure. But where is the structural power that makes them racist?

Sorry I don't have a clue what this means. Structural power? The definition of racism is: "Prejudice, discrimination or antagonism against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior." There is no annotation or proviso regarding structural power.

And obviously people voted leave for lots of different reason regardless of culture, creed or skin colour.

Mummyoflittledragon · 09/05/2017 11:01

Just laughing at the last few comments about ill informed brexiteers. Totally agree with you all btw. Voted remain.

surferjet · 09/05/2017 11:04

Some M'netters are very naive when it comes to Brexit.
Not only do they believe only thick people voted leave, but they also think the UK is racist in comparison to the wonderfully liberal EU. The fact that 11 million people in France have just voted for a far right candidate seems to pass them by.

streetface · 09/05/2017 11:08

mummyoflittledragon

The dictionary does not give the evolved definition. Understanding racism has come a long way. This lady explains it better than me:

Its known as the 'pulling the ladder up behind you' approach. Not wanting others to benefit from opportunities you yourself have had.
Its a bit like voting for university tuition fees when you yourself didn't have to pay any.

All nationalities and ethnicities are capable of racism and xenophobia (and selfishness, apparently). Being white isn't a pre-requisite.

streetface · 09/05/2017 11:10

And still the sneering of people who haven't had the privilege of education continues. Really think that was part of the problem.

OP posts:
loobyloo1234 · 09/05/2017 11:10

Exactly. Like in Italy where black football players still have banana's thrown at them aswell as monkey chants bandied about Confused

user1493759849 · 09/05/2017 11:11

Most people who voted for Brexit knew EXACTLY what they were doing, they knew EXACTLY what the EU are all about, and knew EXACTLY why we are better off out.

From what I have read, and heard, and going by the comments from Remain voters I have met in real life, (and spoken to online,) many of them had no CLUE what the EU is all about or what it's for or what it does etc... Some of the things the Remain voters came out with (before and after the result,) made me cringe.

Some people I spoke to assumed they would never be able to visit Europe again, and we would all be banned from going. A few others I spoke to had no clue that we pay £350 mil a WEEK in, and claimed I was 'full of shit' when I said that.

I have spoken to several sensible people who voted to remain though. They said they would vote to leave now if there was another referendum tomorrow, after what they have learned about the EU, after how the remainers have behaved since the result, and after how the EU has been behaving.

And don't even get me started on that new French leader Macron. THIS is what we would get if we voted Corbyn in! Don't do it people. DON'T Shock

I re-iterate, the LEAVE voters are waaaaaay more clued up than any remain voter I have spoken to. The remainers I have spoken to (in real life AND online) are pretty clueless about what the EU even is. Yet they accuse the LEAVERS of being thick! Confused

And if people think everyone who voted to leave voted purely because of 'frustration,' they're deluded.

To call all brexiteers 'ill informed' after some of things I have heard some of the remainers come out with is fucking hilarious.

It suits the remainers to call us all thick, because they have no other argument .. Says more about them really.

We are leaving the EU. Get over it.
