To wonder what would happen if Corbyn et al did win the GE next month?

As asked by my 14 year old son and his friends today?

Would be an utter disaster, country in turmoil and ruins according to my ex H. What worse than now?

They'll reverse everything, sort this country right out according to majority of my FB friends.

Personally I want anything that'd different from the present status quo but don't think for one second thing labour will get a majority.

We know what the Tories are doing but what would Labour actually do? Would they, could they reverse Brexit? Would they could they pour substantial funds into the NHS? Are they even able to form an efficient government?

Something about extra bank holidays...

JustAKitten · 04/05/2017 16:01

He wouldn't reverse Brexit. But he'd definitely attempt to rescue the horrific public services.

missmodular2 · 04/05/2017 16:06

They'd probably have to go into some sort of coalition with the LibDems and SNP so I imagine there'd be a push for the softest Brexit possible with a referendum on the deal reached at the end of it.

I'm hard pushed to see how awful that would be, to be honest. And I say that as a non Corbyn fan. But extremely unlikely to happen unless there's a massive shift in the polls over the next few weeks.

Valentine2 · 04/05/2017 16:07

I don't think he will be able to go on with quite a few of his policies. But I will vote for him (or LibDem; haven't decided yet) in the hope that the Tories don't come back again. I am in a constituency where even the lifelong Tories have been angry on the local MP for being the Fuckwit he is and I don't think he is coming back. I think anything or anyone who is able to kick May out would be great for the country. She is acting like a baby throwing her toys out of the pram, complaining "they" are "ganging up" on us and trying to influence her re election. Hmm she has proven herself to be about as brainy as BoJo and that's saying something.

Brittbugs80 · 04/05/2017 16:09

I try to remember that before a general election, every party will promise everything that they think voters want to hear. I've seen some hilarious conversations between Labour voters who have no idea. My friend is convinced that Labour will save the NHS and that's why she's voting for them. I asked her how and she said they will invest more money into it. Ask her where the money is coming from and she says "the deficit will be cleared and reinvested in the NHS". She can't explain it to me and I don't understand what she means but she read on a Labour Facebook page, so that's ok!

Walkingtowork · 04/05/2017 16:09

I reckon he'd hate all the pomp and ceremony (natural protester imo), step down pretty quick, and let someone more sensible (Labour obvs) take over. That's my dream anyway...

CassandraAusten · 04/05/2017 16:09

I don't think Labour would reverse Brexit. But they would aim for a soft Brexit (still in single market), rather than the current Tory hard Brexit strategy.

Walkingtowork · 04/05/2017 16:11

Judge on what they do not what they say. I have little to no faith in manifestos. Labour set up the NHS and has supported it when in government.

klondikecookie · 04/05/2017 16:12

I think he'd take a more diplomatic and less antagonistic approach towards the EU in negotiations. I suspect there'd be a much greater chance of a 'soft' Brexit, which would be good for businessess.

I suspect he'd want to renationalise the railways, but idk if that would be successful.

The NHS would get greater funding. Taxes for high earners would likely increase.

We probably wouldn't invite Donald Trump on a state visit.

But yeah, it isn't going to happen. Even having typed the generally supportive paragraphs above, I might well take my vote elsewhere.

Sostenueto · 04/05/2017 16:17

Anything would be better than May.....

BastardBloodAndSand · 04/05/2017 16:17

Well hopefully he'll stop pissing allover disabled and vulnerable people like the Tories have.

goodnessidontknow · 04/05/2017 16:22

I think a lot of people would get an awful shock when it came to light that all of his wonderful promises are empty as there simply isn't enough money to support his utopian ideal. For extra funds to be put to for example, the NHS, either some other service has to suffer, we have to borrow even more or taxes have to increase.
Bleeding "the rich" isn't a long term solution and increased taxes across the board are unfavorable so the labour solution is to borrow ever increasing amounts. If labour somehow won the election we'd be left with the worst possible brexit outcome (gone but still tied to the apron strings) and bankrupt.

user40788 · 04/05/2017 16:26

Corbyn would go and potter in his allotment and then have a major panic attack. His whole political career has been based on telling those in charge what they are doing wrong safe in the knowledge that he would never be elected as Prime Minister so would never have to actually put what he preaches into practice.

JustAKitten · 04/05/2017 16:27

Services don't have to suffer. Certain sections of society just have to pay their fair share.

Bleeding the rich, hahaha. Such bleeding. People are dying but suggest tax the rich and WOW that's TOO FAR.

alltouchedout · 04/05/2017 16:28

The first thing would be that I would need treatment for shock. Then I would get very drunk in celebration and when the hangover had eventually receded, things would improve massively :)

wickerlampshade · 04/05/2017 16:34

Anyone who has a choice and earns over about £40k would leave the country or stop working so hard as they would tax high earnings at such a rate that it wouldn't be worth the effort. With limited tax revenue he won't be able to provide the unicorns and sparkly fairies that he has promised. And it would seriously impact on his allotment time.

PhoenixJasmine · 04/05/2017 16:35

I would hope that cuts to health and social services would be halted and reversed. I suspect we would be able to remain on cordial terms with the rest of Europe and probably agree a softer Brexit. I don't know about a referendum on the final deal though - what if the country rejected it, what, we just wouldn't leave? A50 isn't reversible AFAIAA.

Could he scrap/not renew trident, is that money recoverable?

Blowingthroughthejasmineinmymi · 04/05/2017 16:38

Love the idea of a soft Brexit from Hard core Leavers from the core of the Labour party! These people have hated the EU since its inception back in the 70's Grin.

JustAKitten · 04/05/2017 16:39

If you didn't have a conscience.

(Or familial ties. Or social ones. Geographical reasons, emotive ones, not to mention the stress of moving to another country especially if you don't speak the language.)

The idea of the rich holding the country ransom is ridiculous. Go on then. See you later. Oh it was an empty threat? Who knew!

TreeTop7 · 04/05/2017 16:42

A coalition would be ok - maybe - because reasonable people from Lib Dem/Plaid etc would be involved. A Labour win would see the likes ofMcDonmell and Abbott with real influence - that would be disastrous. Labour wint win though. And there won't be a coalition either. It'll be a Cons pasting, with dozens of Labour MPs out of work come 9/6. The party will then have five years to pull itself together.

Snapespeare · 04/05/2017 16:42

I'd be £420 up on a twenty quid bet.

My son has had poor mental health under the coalition and conservative governments. Getting ANY help for him. Education and health wise has been a constant battle with statutory services who are at breaking point. I hate the Tories. I despise the liberal Democrats who enabled their decimation of public services in this country and I will vote Labour with hope in my heart that things will change for the better for ordinary people.

rosie1959 · 04/05/2017 16:49

Brexit vote was bad enough but Corbyn in power .........
I quite like him as a person but would have no faith in him running the country let alone dealing with Brexit.

goodnessidontknow · 04/05/2017 16:49

Bleeding the rich, hahaha. Such bleeding. People are dying but suggest tax the rich and WOW that's TOO FAR.

I didn't say it wasn't right, just that it isn't a long term solution. It's an accepted fact that the taxes paid by the wealthiest portion of society are the only thing that keeps the current system going and that if those taxes are increased beyond a certain point those tax payers will vote with their feet at which point the rest of our society which is reliant on those tax receipts ends up with less in the pot than before.

As an aside I genuinely think a lot of people would be less aggrieved at the taxes they pay if they could see it was being well used. I wonder how much extra there would be for the NHS if we could divert all the money wasted on government bureaucracy!

lamado · 04/05/2017 16:49

DH and I both fit into this category and will not be leaving or stop working. More than happy to pay more taxes to fund public services, hope we can agree access to European markets (and in no way will that be free), hope workers rights are protected and hope we don't become some off-shore tax-light/ regulation light island that will only benefit the 'haves'. So DH and I will be voting Corbyn.

PhoenixJasmine · 04/05/2017 16:52

I think if Labour did win, there'd be a huge upsurge in the national mood - people would feel that their vote counted, that they could influence things, people would feel more engaged with public life, hope that they may be listened to. Perhaps.
