To wonder what would happen if Corbyn et al did win the GE next month?

As asked by my 14 year old son and his friends today?

Would be an utter disaster, country in turmoil and ruins according to my ex H. What worse than now?

They'll reverse everything, sort this country right out according to majority of my FB friends.

Personally I want anything that'd different from the present status quo but don't think for one second thing labour will get a majority.

We know what the Tories are doing but what would Labour actually do? Would they, could they reverse Brexit? Would they could they pour substantial funds into the NHS? Are they even able to form an efficient government?

It would be a shock, and would be viewed as the young winning over the baby boomers.

There would be short term growth. If we were still in the U.K. We would definitely start looking at options to move to a different country to protect our future.

DoctorTwo · 04/05/2017 19:37

there simply isn't enough money to support his utopian ideal

There's enough money to fund Trident but not enough for the NHS. Not enough for the police. Not enough for social care. Not enough for homeless care. But enough for a nuclear weapon that's owned by the USA, that is not independent as the Tories want us to believe, that we can only use with the US permission as they won't give us the codes.

We have a fiat currency, as does every other county in the world. We can create money out of thin air to fund the NHS and infrastructure projects instead of doing the same to keep banks alive or buying useless nuclear weapons.

specialsubject · 04/05/2017 19:41

Matter of opinion about nuclear weapons...

But I am intrigued by creating money. How does that work ?

ToastDemon · 04/05/2017 19:42

I'd happily pay more tax to fund public services. Not all higher earners are selfish fuckers fortunately.

Radicalrooster · 04/05/2017 20:11

Britain's nuclear deterrent is independent, and does it require codes for launch

ukdefencejournal.org.uk/no-america-doesnt-control-britains-nuclear-weapons/

The estimated £100 billion cost of Trident replacement would be spent over a period of around 30 years. Over a similar timescale the NHS would cost around £3.5 trillion. Foreign aid, often spent unaccountably or in the form of commission to various consultancies, would cost about £400 billion over that time.

You also have to offset the employment provided by BAe systems up at Barrow, and the costs of decommissioning. Which is why the GMB union is pro Trident, and told Cornyn to get back in his box on the issue.

Radicalrooster · 04/05/2017 20:11

Does NOT require US codes for launch

waterrat · 04/05/2017 20:17

I cant believe someone said people who earn over 40k would leave the country or stop working so hard. What bollocks. My husband earns well over that and we would be happy to pay more tax if it meant our library 're opened or the local sure start centre could start running again.

christinarossetti · 04/05/2017 20:17

The 'we don't have enough money' line is Tory ideology to justify austerity. There's plenty of money in the system (and would be even more if corporate tax was properly collected).

christinarossetti · 04/05/2017 20:18

If Labour did win.... I would feel less terrified for the future of my children.

That's enough for me to vote for Corbyn.

SeaWitchly · 04/05/2017 20:19

Services don't have to suffer. Certain sections of society just have to pay their fair share.

Bleeding the rich, hahaha. Such bleeding. People are dying but suggest tax the rich and WOW that's TOO FAR.

This ^

I will be voting for Corbyn and Labour.
And I say this as someone with a higher tax rate paying DH. We both believe in paying our fair share to support a society that works well for everyone.

StillDrivingMeBonkers · 04/05/2017 20:19

We'd be bankrupt. Again. For the third time.

Ankleswingers · 04/05/2017 20:21

We would be bankrupt within six months.

Bringmesunshite · 04/05/2017 20:22

We'd find out that he couldn't run a piss up in a brewery

My husband is a higher rate tax payer, he's voting Labour as am I.

Hopefully if Labour win they might be able to start repairing some of the shocking damage done to the NHS by this Government.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 04/05/2017 20:33

He'd best start watering his magic money tree.

There would be the likes of McDonnell who would be Chancellor of the Exchequer, giving speeches in front of Communist and Ba'ath flags for starters.

FelixtheMouse · 04/05/2017 20:34

The IMF would have to bail us out within 12 months like they did in 1976.

notquiteruralbliss · 04/05/2017 22:04

I'm another high rate tax payer who will be voting Labour. Hoping for a fairer society, more money spent on public services and a better future for my DCs. And yes I do know I will pay more tax if Labour win the election.

summerisleair · 04/05/2017 22:07

Corbyn is anti-EU; always has been.

It bemuses me that many of my more rabid 'hope cameron rots in hell for daring to ask the UK what they want' friends are also avid Corbyn supporters.

I would be concerned about defence, or lack thereof, under Corbyn.

SuperBeagle · 04/05/2017 22:10

Can you imagine Corbyn trying to negotiate the Brexit deal? Confused He'd be a disaster.

Figgygal · 04/05/2017 22:11

Pigs would fly

There's honestly more chance of that than a labour win

ThisAintALoveSong · 04/05/2017 22:16

I think it was Labour that introduced PFI contracts for hospitals under Tony shithead Blair. Could someone correct me if I am wrong? So the NHS is paying crippling interest on these contracts.

However I've always supported Labour and will be doing so again. I vote for the principles and ideology I am most aligned with, not the person at the helm of it. Plus I don't want these Tory twats in for another term.

I think Labour could get votes if the said they would have a referendum on the brexit deal like the lib dems want. I think Corbyn is a nice guy but I'm not sure of his leadership skills

Borntorunfast · 04/05/2017 22:16

Two higher rate tax earners here, happy to pay more tax if it means better education and not literally tripping over homeless people - who weren't on the streets 5 years ago - every day on our way to work.

pennypickle · 04/05/2017 22:17

There is no chance in Hell that Corbyn would become PM. Put the thought to the back of your mind OP and tell your DC to get on with their lives

ThisAintALoveSong · 04/05/2017 22:18

Correction: PFI contracts were invented under John 'more peas Norma' Major
