I'm overweight and wear leggings

I can't be dead certain but I thought I heard two women sniggering about me in a shop when I was bending down.

They went silent when I got up and looked in their direction. They proceded laughing and whispering again when I turned to go down the next aisle.

It may well have had nothing to do with me but you know when you just get that feeling that you're being watched? I had that before I even clocked them.

I think it was because I'm fat and wearing leggings. I worry now that if i need to bend or stretch and in certain light people may catch a glimpse of my breakfast underwear. And every massive little ripple of cellulite is probably on show.

But they are just so damn comfy.

Am I being publicly undecent in my choice of attire or am I being over self conscious and paranoid?

M&S apparently do super amazing premium leggings, the difference in comfort is huge. They are a bit pricier but worth it. Primary are good for tunic tops.

Andylion · 06/05/2017 05:12

Another vote for yoga pants, I have the ones a pp posted a link to, above. They are great.

MarcelineTheVampire · 06/05/2017 05:23

OP wear whatever you want, people can be mean, but you are entitled to wear whatever you damn well please.

I'm pregnant and I live in leggings- I couldn't care less what anyone thought.

TheDowagerCuntess · 07/05/2017 03:33

Baggy slouch/boyfriend trousers/jeans are much more comfy

Yes, shame about the way they look though.

Infinitely better than leggings!

IMO they look worse. Horses for courses innit Wink

Out2pasture · 07/05/2017 06:50

all that loose fabric in the gusset and low slung on the hips would irrationally drive me insane.

Rinkydinkypink · 07/05/2017 06:58

I wear leggings to replace tights. Always under a dress or longline tunic.

People can be very rude and hurtful. I aim not to be like them and simply move on.

I am overweight and trying very hard to change!

eurochick · 07/05/2017 07:55

I've seen a number of people looking like the picture aurynne posted. It is not a good luck. Leggings should only be worn with tops that come down past your growler.

Therealslimshady1 · 07/05/2017 08:38

IonaNE, sloppy and androgenous does not work for many people, you need a boyish figure to go with it.

TheDowagerCuntess · 07/05/2017 10:15

Equally, it could be said that you need a certain figure to wear leggings.... And they are far less forgiving.

I'm much more comfortable in something that doesn't cling mercilessly to every lump and bump 😬 but each to their own.

Aeroflotgirl · 07/05/2017 10:19

I wear sports leggings, Addidas, and Nike, to kickboxing, don't know what else to wear, don't think I can manouver properly in jeans. What is it anyone's business what others wear. Leggings look fine with a long top or tunic. You just see the legs part and not the bottom or camel toe ffs. I have just bought some nice Gstar Raw black jean leggings which look smart, the comfort of leggings, but the look of jeans.

ForalltheSaints · 07/05/2017 11:14

The sniggering was impolite I feel.

However, the OP has illustrated one of the good arguments against the wearing go leggings. I would not ban them but a tax of £50 at least per pair would be reasonable.

user1491326393 · 07/05/2017 11:17

It probably isn't to do with your weight. Its probably to do with the fact you were wearing see through bottoms. They could either see your undies through them or they rolled down for a nice glimpse of crack.

womaninatightspot · 07/05/2017 11:17

I'm overweight and wear leggings but only with dresses and so forth. Leggings alone not a nice look on anyone tbh. That said you'd have to be a complete arse to care let alone laugh at what someone else is wearing.

dilapidated · 07/05/2017 12:07

Could you have had a hole ?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 07/05/2017 12:27

@ForalltheSaints - I don't think a blanket tax would be reasonable - there is nothing wrong with leggings worn under a dress or a long tunic that covers your bum even when you bend over.

Firef1y72 · 07/05/2017 12:29

I spend much of my free time in a gym/running so I virtually live in leggings. Not plain black but funky printed leggings. I do try and wear long t shirts/vests, not to cover my bum but because after losing 8.5 stone I have excess skin on my tummy. I'm still overweight but do think that for my body shape leggings are really flattering.

(I always do the squat test in a new pair of leggings and attempt to match underwear colour if necessary.)

Decent leggings don't do this. They just look like skinny jeans.

Aeroflotgirl · 07/05/2017 12:48

Good on your Firefly, loving your leggings, really funky. Exactly, my sports ones feel like a second skin, so comfortable, and thick, more like yoga pants, without the flare at the bottom.

Aeroflotgirl · 07/05/2017 12:55

Exactly good quality leggings do not cling to your lumps and bumps, they skim over them, and my Addidas one has a tummy control panel.

I have some of these www.jdsports.co.uk/product/blue-adidas-originals-3-stripes-leggings/244733/

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 07/05/2017 12:57

I also remember when leggings were first introduced and they were called footless tights...

Late 70s? Idea pinched from dance wear ("dance" as in ballet not "dance" as in clubbing)

They marketed giant , sloppy t-shirts which came to mid thigh which you twisted and tied into a knot at the top of thigh or oversized "men's shirts" with tails ( genuine men's tailed shirts could be found in vintage shops)

Birdsgottaf1y · 07/05/2017 13:07

""If you are wearing leggings because other clothes are too tight, why not choose bigger clothes that fit?""

Because what fits on the hips/waist, is often baggy on the legs.

As for the Nora Batty look, I rarely see skinny jeans that aren't wrinkled, this is on all shapes and ages.

I'm hoping that my size is temporary, as I said, it's through disability and medication, so I like many do not want to spend out on something that doesn't fit in a couple of months.

Aeroflotgirl · 07/05/2017 13:29

I have ordered these leggings, are these unflattering, I don't think so!

When you are big, denim can be uncomfortable and restrictive, it depends on the fabric, if its soft and stretchy.

user1489179512 · 07/05/2017 13:34

Leggings are unflattering even on teenagers. End.
