I'm overweight and wear leggings

I can't be dead certain but I thought I heard two women sniggering about me in a shop when I was bending down.

They went silent when I got up and looked in their direction. They proceded laughing and whispering again when I turned to go down the next aisle.

It may well have had nothing to do with me but you know when you just get that feeling that you're being watched? I had that before I even clocked them.

I think it was because I'm fat and wearing leggings. I worry now that if i need to bend or stretch and in certain light people may catch a glimpse of my breakfast underwear. And every massive little ripple of cellulite is probably on show.

But they are just so damn comfy.

Am I being publicly undecent in my choice of attire or am I being over self conscious and paranoid?

Leggings aren't trousers. No matter your weight you can see through them.
They are good with tunics/dresses. Not short tops.

haveacupoftea · 05/05/2017 01:31

Get yourself a pair of treggings! They're fab if you don't want to wear long tops every day

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 05/05/2017 02:18

Everyone looks a mole in leggings. They do no-one any justice..
Those 2 laughing gas idiots included.
How old are they? 12

Birdsgottaf1y · 05/05/2017 02:42

"" I hate when I see women wearing leggings when they could wear a pair of actual (flattering) trousers.
No matter what your body shape is, LEGGINGS ARE NOT FLATTERING ON ANYONE. Ew! I am pretty sure though you'd find a lot of nice trousers!""

I'm temporarily disabled and have become obese. I've tried trousers/jeans/jeggings on, in every shop, none of them were flattering and i wasn't prepared to spend the money on something that i look crap in and would be uncomfortable in.

I wear mine with tunics. I'm a strange shape, the Meds that I've been on increase stomach fat. So I need to size up,in fitted clothes, that then don't fit on the legs.

There's a hatred of maxi dresses on here, but if you are a certain shape and size, then it's leggings or long dresses.

SparklyFairyDust · 05/05/2017 05:09

I was going to say I saw that you can actually buy knickers that has padding or something so it looks like you have a massive camel toe. When I think of camel toe, my mind goes back to that prancercise video. An example of why even on skinny souls, they can be awful.

But like I also said with leggings & jeggings, I always wear long tops so you can't see my crotch.

I actually wear leggings as a base layer under jeggings as I get so cold.

sxround · 05/05/2017 06:49

None of their business.

Therealslimshady1 · 05/05/2017 08:08

Not everyone gets "camel toe"

In fact, lots of people don't

Also, some leggings ARE thick and not see-through (mint velvet do thick cotton ones)

And as to leggings not looking good on anyone, that is subjective.

BumWad · 05/05/2017 08:10

Leggings are fine as long as your arse is covered

User998877 · 05/05/2017 08:16

Leggings with a short top is a no no regardless of your size IMO. I've lost count of the times I've seen underwear on full view because of this.

Leggings (good quality ones) are perfectly fine with a long tunic top/dress regardless of your size.

However if these pair were indeed laughing at you, then they are idiots.

AnathemaPulsifer · 05/05/2017 08:24

Go for dresses on top if you can. Or try the £14 'skinny' jeans Sainsbury's sell. They have a button and fly like jeans and sturdy fabric but are as stretchy as leggings. You could wear them with any top reaching past your bum.

Those women are horrible though. They were sniggering at your weight more than anything, so no outfit is likely to stop then being horrible.

HomityBabbityPie · 05/05/2017 08:29

It's really not on to laugh at anyone like that regardless of what they're wearing.

I think a lot of stuff looks daft but I couldn't give a shit what other people wear, it's a free country.

HomityBabbityPie · 05/05/2017 08:31

I also find it bizarre when people say leggings are awful on anyone, how are they any different from tights if you wear them with a dress or skirt for eg?

ConfusedDotty · 05/05/2017 08:41

Sorry, but I have never ever seen anyone, fat or thin, look good in leggings. A tunic/dress does not disguise the fact they are indeed the dreaded leggings.

The worst combo ever must be leggings teamed with those awful ugly sheepskin boot slipper things.

If a dress is too short, then it's just too short, leggings will NOT disguise that fact.

I wouldn't have laughed at you though OP.

HomityBabbityPie · 05/05/2017 08:44

But how are they different to tights, dotty?

PookieDo · 05/05/2017 08:50

The angst against leggings is so odd. I take it leggings haters never wear black tights either

MsHippo · 05/05/2017 08:56

I think Dotty's point is that they AREN'T different to black tights, which I totally agree with. If you wouldn't wear a dress/top with just tights underneath then personally I wouldn't wear it with leggings. They are a nice more comfortable and warmer alternative to tights, but nothing more. They are certainly not, in my opinion, an alternative to trousers.

PookieDo · 05/05/2017 09:04

As many of us have pointed out you can buy very thick leggings which are perfectly acceptable to wear with a slightly shorter dress/tunic than you would wear with 80 denier tights. No risk of any pants or camel toe showing if it covers your bum and crotch. All you can see are legs. What's gross about that?

Therealslimshady1 · 05/05/2017 09:10

I was chatted up twice at the launderette yesterday, and told I had great legs...

Whilst wearing leggings (at 45 and size 14)

Maybe launderette visitors have lower standards of beauty Grin

Made me laugh, having just read his thread!

user1493022461 · 05/05/2017 09:48

Ignore them. Slut shaming isn't ok and no other sort of shaming should be OK either

Stop throwing around stupid american buzzwords, especially when you've picked the wrong one. The idiotic non word you were looking for was "fat-shaming", but don't use that either. Just talk properly.

HomityBabbityPie · 05/05/2017 09:49

People are saying they're awful however they're worn. But if the arse is covered I'm still not getting how they're any different to tights.

user1489179512 · 05/05/2017 10:05

PookieDo

The angst against leggings is so odd. I take it leggings haters never wear black tights either

What???? People generally wear black opaques with a skirted garment. They don't go out in them WITHOUT the skirted garment. Think that's the point.

Hate hate hate leggings. (They must get sweaty too. Ugh)

DisorderedAllsorts · 05/05/2017 10:08

A woman on my road regularly wears leggings and a srappy vest top and nothing else apart from shoes. Imo she's wearing her underwear in public and I'm mentally dressing her in a denim skirt, a white shirt and boots. She'd look so much better with clothes on top of her vest and leggings.

paxillin · 05/05/2017 10:12

Laughing about other people's look is dickish in the extreme.

Leggings without anything on top always look like the wearer forgot to put the skirt on.

peachgreen · 05/05/2017 10:18

I saw a (slim) woman wearing leggings once and not only could you clearly see her thong through them, you could also see her sanitary towel Confused I'm all for women wearing whatever they're comfortable in but I've been wary about leggings ever since!

HomityBabbityPie · 05/05/2017 10:41

They must get sweaty too

A lot less sweaty than tights.

I only wear leggings if my arse is covered. Is that acceptable?
