I'm overweight and wear leggings

I can't be dead certain but I thought I heard two women sniggering about me in a shop when I was bending down.

They went silent when I got up and looked in their direction. They proceded laughing and whispering again when I turned to go down the next aisle.

It may well have had nothing to do with me but you know when you just get that feeling that you're being watched? I had that before I even clocked them.

I think it was because I'm fat and wearing leggings. I worry now that if i need to bend or stretch and in certain light people may catch a glimpse of my breakfast underwear. And every massive little ripple of cellulite is probably on show.

But they are just so damn comfy.

Am I being publicly undecent in my choice of attire or am I being over self conscious and paranoid?

Leggings = house trousers.

carefreeeee · 05/05/2017 15:26

Always cover your bum with a long top when wearing leggings if you are more than ten years old. It doesn't make them any less comfy!

ifyoulikepinacolada · 05/05/2017 15:33

I wear leggings as trousers for work. With short tops. Shamelessly.

(Spoiler alert: I'm a yoga teacher).

In all seriousness they're only OK if they're not see through. If they're cotton, they're see through when you bend over. All of them. No matter how thick the cotton. Weight has nothing to do with it though, they can be so flattering if you dress carefully!

Beerwench · 05/05/2017 15:42

I'm overweight and I don't wear leggings don't even get me started on jeggings because I personally can't seem to get a pair that aren't see through at some point and that I don't have to hoik up every 5 minutes. I also don't like the way I look in them. I used to ride horses regularly when younger (and overweight but not as much as now) and wore jeans because I hated jodhpurs for the same reason I hate jeggings - I don't like the way I look n them.
It's personal preference really regardless of size, whether you're an 8 or 18 and yourbreakfast underwear shows through your leggings then it's not a pleasant look.
I wear jeans, straight or bootleg, I don't look any thinner but I feel comfortable.
Ignore the laughing idiots - they sound like the type that would laugh at someone different to them no matter what - wear what you're comfy with and maybe check the rear view if you think it might be a problem.

I agree leggings are house clothes, like pyjamas. I much prefer Palazzo or harem pants.
If you are wearing leggings because other clothes are too tight, why not choose bigger clothes that fit?
I loathe tights, haven't worn any for over 20 years. I only wear dresses in summer when I can be bare legged. Leggings are even more evil than tights, they just slide down and cling to your legs.

PookieDo · 05/05/2017 15:54

Hareem pants look 99.9% more like pyjamas than leggings do

I'm not wearing mine right now but I will post a pic when I am

Wecks · 05/05/2017 15:59

I agree but I'm only went going to wear them indoorsWink

Wecks · 05/05/2017 15:59

Only ever..

hardheadedwoman · 05/05/2017 16:09

Why not wear yoga trousers instead, comfortable and more flattering plus thicker material

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 05/05/2017 16:12

I wear them so I can wear shorter dresses or tunics over the top - as I said earlier, I can't wear dresses that are knee length or a bit shorter without them, because it just looks wrong in my shape - but with leggings it looks nice. I don't think harem or palazzo pants, or wider leg trousers would work, for me.

Plus, I live in Scotland, and they help keep me warm in winter - I can't find woolly tights to fit my shape, and leggings don't come down the way tights do (on me, anyway).

HomityBabbityPie · 05/05/2017 16:45

Ok palazzo and harem trousers look waaaayyy more pyjamas like than leggings, not that I think it matters.

If you are wearing leggings because other clothes are too tight, why not choose bigger clothes that fit?

Because I don't find them comfortable. I have never found jeans comfy, nor trousers with buttons, nor tights. HTH.

SparklyFairyDust · 05/05/2017 17:33

I do admit jeggings have to be pulled up, but Dorothy Perkins do decent jeggings, pretty quite thick.

I agree leggings do the Nora Batty more than tights do. Actually got this imagine of younger members going Nora whooooo?

Notmyrealname85 · 05/05/2017 18:12

I wear them but with a day dress (tea dress?), when black tights would be too much.

When stretching them you can see all sorts, e.g. the white of pants (have seen a girl's pad drift halfway from her arse, and leggings were unfortunately see through as material was thin)

user1482079332 · 05/05/2017 18:18

Their rude, leggings show everything regardless of size throw on a long tunic or vest top to protect your modesty

HomityBabbityPie · 05/05/2017 18:20

How is that possible user, if you have solid material covering your arse over said leggings Confused

I mean, what are they showing?

DeleteOrDecay · 05/05/2017 18:24

I find it odd that some people are so concerned about other people wearing leggings that they are falling over themselves to find reasons as to why people should wear something elseGrin

HomityBabbityPie · 05/05/2017 18:25

I just find it funny that thus far no one has explained why black tights are acceptable under dresses but black leggings are not.

TheDowagerCuntess · 05/05/2017 20:04

Personally, I think black tights ruin most dresses and skirts - black really doesn't go with everything, especially opaque black.

Leggings are worse, because they look like leggings. So I don't wear either of them. Other people can crack on.

IonaNE · 05/05/2017 20:11

Yabu. If you have to wear leggings, wear a long tunic-type top or a dress. And there is no need to bend over in such a way that everything ends up on view. (And for what it's worth: I don't think leggings are that comfortable and I'm a size 8-10. Baggy slouch/boyfriend trousers/jeans are much more comfy.)

HomityBabbityPie · 05/05/2017 20:12

Yes, shame about the way they look though.

MsJudgemental · 05/05/2017 20:13

For the second time this evening, LEGGINGS ARE NOT TROUSERS.

NameChanger22 · 05/05/2017 20:17

I wear leggings, but only as tights with a dress over the top. They are very comfortable, more comfortable than tights. I've never heard anyone laugh at me.

HomityBabbityPie · 05/05/2017 20:19

No ones said there are judgemental Confused

IonaNE · 05/05/2017 21:17

I love the way they look. I like the sloppy, androgynous look.

ApproachingATunnel · 05/05/2017 21:47

Dont do that to yourself, seriously. I'm sure you can find yourself a pair of comfortable trousers and leave leggings for lazy days at home. Not because you're overweight but because they generally dont look good on anyone. And they are often rather see-through...
