I'm overweight and wear leggings

I can't be dead certain but I thought I heard two women sniggering about me in a shop when I was bending down.

They went silent when I got up and looked in their direction. They proceded laughing and whispering again when I turned to go down the next aisle.

It may well have had nothing to do with me but you know when you just get that feeling that you're being watched? I had that before I even clocked them.

I think it was because I'm fat and wearing leggings. I worry now that if i need to bend or stretch and in certain light people may catch a glimpse of my breakfast underwear. And every massive little ripple of cellulite is probably on show.

But they are just so damn comfy.

Am I being publicly undecent in my choice of attire or am I being over self conscious and paranoid?

Had it IN mind 🙄

paxillin · 05/05/2017 13:52

So can good quality non-transparent knickers be worn in summer instead of shorts or skirts?

Should be fine if good quality legging can be worn without a dress, skirt or tunic because they are just like trousers.

HomityBabbityPie · 05/05/2017 14:02

I really don't see why good quality non see through leggings are any different to, say, thin stretchy jeans

Anyone want to explain it?

Aeroflotgirl · 05/05/2017 14:02

Leggings are not underwear, they are outerclothing, they are tight trousers. Yes if you do wear them, make sure they are thick and wear a tunic or a long top.

user1493022461 · 05/05/2017 14:06

They are not tight trousers. Nobody wants to see your arse in leggings.

loopylou6 · 05/05/2017 14:09

I wear leggings and I'm fat, I wear them because any other pants that fit round my flabby belly are too loose on my legs, and any that fit my legs are too tight on my belly.
I always wear a long top teamed with a long cardie tho.

user1489179512 · 05/05/2017 14:15

If you wear leggings - which are generally thicker than tights - AND a dress in top, then yes you might be more sweaty.

user1489179512 · 05/05/2017 14:15

...on top

user1489179512 · 05/05/2017 14:16

I hate the leggings and dress look. Would never wear that sort of thing.

imjessie · 05/05/2017 14:18

Leggings should always be bum covered . I'm often amazed that bigger women wear them like trousers when they are the least flattering item on the face of the earth!! I'm size 10 and have a good bum and still only wear them with a shirt too at the gym and even then make sure they are thick ones!!! Nothing wrong with being overweight ( your choice ) but please get a long top!

C0untDucku1a · 05/05/2017 14:24

I wear leggings all the time. You need to make sure theyre not seethrough. You need to have a dress or tunic that covers your bum. Short tops and leggings are just for teens.

Good for you. Nobody is asking you to.

No more sweaty than wearing tights and a dress surely? Or jeans and a top.

I am a lot cooler (temp-wise, obviously) wearing leggings than I am wearing jeans.

Callaird · 05/05/2017 14:35

What does it matter what anyone else thinks?! I'm sure that if you looked at them for a few seconds, you could have found a few things to judge them on. Ignore them. They must have boring little lives if all they can find to chat about is what you are wearing.

I'm fat, I wear leggings, my boyfriend loved me in leggings!! I really don't give a shit about anything anyone says about me. Although I've never had anyone comment on what I look like or I might just other things going around my head that I don't notice/hear anything sad little strangers might say.

DontBeASalmon · 05/05/2017 14:40

Unless you have an amazingly toned body and bum, why would you chose not to cover your backside? "look at me, I am flabby"!
Why oh why? It's one thing to accept your body shape, but to flaunt your worst features? Why?

paxillin · 05/05/2017 14:41

I am amazed how common leggings as day wear appear to be. I do see them on the street, but not often. Children and teenagers wear them, some of my students do, but usually only first years still in teen-mode.

On the school run you see leggings, but usually lycra ones and mum is off on a run after drop off. I do see them more often on very large women, I imagine it is for comfort. On MN legging threads, there are lots of people wearing them, must be regional or something.

BackInBlack78 · 05/05/2017 14:42

I don't wear leggings as I'm fat. I don't like seeing other people's underwear when I see others wearing theirs and I'd hate to think I was showing mine (and everything else!)

Although, I wouldn't laugh at anyone bending over in a shop (regardless of size) I'd probably just walk away!

AWendyAteMyFitbit · 05/05/2017 14:57

ProseccoBitch I wear my denim shorts over leggings regularly, not to make a style-statement particularly, but it is comfy.

ConfusedDotty · 05/05/2017 15:00

Please, they do not look good on anyone not even Mexican wrestlers. I won't ever be convinced they should ever be worn outdoors.

Can any of you legging lovers post a picture of someone in leggings looking remotely stylish/smart?

DeleteOrDecay · 05/05/2017 15:05

Leggings lovers? How very grown upGrin

I doubt anyone 'loves' leggings. They just like them. In the same way some people like wearing jumpsuits. I don't like jumpsuits personally, I wouldn't judge anyone who does or demand that they find me a picture of someone looking stylish in them to try and prove some sort of point. That's a bit strange.

Some people like them, some people don't. What's the big deal? A bit of live and let live goes a long way.

HomityBabbityPie · 05/05/2017 15:07

How is it any different from wearing tights and a dress? Genuine question.

HomityBabbityPie · 05/05/2017 15:09

Also how daft to say "post a picture of someone looking stylish/smart wearing leggings". Style is subjective. I personally think jeans look awful on most people but that is my own, subjective viewpoint and I would never dream of saying ridiculous things like "jeans are gross".

Huldra · 05/05/2017 15:12

Save your back and modesty by picking up things properly. Don't bend from the waist and shove your bum in the air, people bend at the knees Smile
